Robs 52 for 2010 - Week 17 Peace

It's the b&w version for me hands down. :clap::clap::clap:

And 3 quid is cheap if you get what you want :D

I did a similar thing for a couple of the challenges last year. The first one, an accordian player in Mallorca for Urban, which I didn't post and cost me €3 and the second one, a beggar woman on the steps of Notre Dame for Poverty, which I did post and cost €2 were well worth it.

the colour version is too subdued (for me)
looks like a real character, and bet he was glad of the "donation"
 
Looks like you've really split opinion on this one Rob . . . which isn't a bad thing.

For me it's the Tesco puddle. A really different take on the theme, love the colours and distortion in the water and I actually find that far more interesting than the obvious type of "street photography". Maybe a bit of a crop off the top so that the sign is closer to being on the top third.

Looks like an interesting character for your second shot and the B&W conversion is the better version IMO . . . but I just don't quite "get" this photographing strangers thing :thinking:

My word, I had no idea one image could cause such a mixed bag of reactions.
Thanks to all of you for taking the time to comment. I'm actually happy with both and seeing as I've not bound myself to ay self imposed rules will have two submissions this week. Once again thanks for taking the time to look and comment :thumbs:

Thanks for visiting again and for taking the time to pass comment. I admit, I like the idea of my puddle but i need a bigger one I think. I'll try the suggested crop although surely if you divide the pic into horizontal thirds isn't it in the middle one :nuts: ?

I understand how you feel re photographing stangers but c'mon have you never seen someone in the street and thought 'now that's a face for a photograph' ? ;)
 
I like the B+W version very much.. but do prefer the colour this time.. nice muted tones in the background and the accordian is a lovely rich colour which is lost in the B+W..

he certainly does have a face for a photograph, worth the £3 I think :)
 
Rob... I prefer the colour of the accordian player, the soft muted tones I really like.

I also like the Tesco rippled puddle, in fact I'm going to agree with Sarah and say that's my fave of the two, just needs a little crop.
 
B&W version of the accordian player is my favourite.

So this is nothing more than a 'idea in progress'. Having said that with time running out fast it may be my final submission. I've tried to steer clear of the glaringly obvious this week and if time permitts I have an exceptionally abstract idea that I'm hoping to present before Sunday :D

Things I have learnt, foggy days are not good for togging in my book, photoshop can be simple and fun.
 
I quite like this shot Rob.

Is it simply a static shot processed with zoom blur, or did you take the shot whilst moving (either in a car, or moving the zoom ring)

Bang on for the theme, and interested to see what this "abstract" idea is!

Works for me Rob... the blur fits and as Jenny said... Silverstone and the M ways... too

Thanks very much. It's a static shot with radial blur added to everything except the sign - I cheated :D Sadly my abstract may not happen it appears I need a macro lens :(

i like it Rob been trying to do that on camera with mixed results(rubbish). The worst thing i even know the sign. Gives a good sense of speed.
 
Ooo! There are a few of these floating around, but this is by far my favourite. The compostion works perfectly. Smart!
 
Creative idea, hard to look at though for more than a few seconds :D. Was there a few times last year :thumbs:
 
the zoom certainly conveys speed
using a sign with motorways and Silverstone was clever
(ok too clever - I missed the significance 1st time through)

seems to need a touch more contrast?
 
Catching up
week 1 your gas ring hovering was a great start to the set love the colour and the look of it just floating in air
week 2 Door would of liked it on the other side to draw the eye into the picture
week 3 log for chopped hard subject as you said but have seen a lot worse
week 4 great B&W picture up close and personal
week 5 Very clever use of photoshop to get your speed effect.:clap:

I tried the zoom effect too, though not with such a pertinent sign....actually, not with any sign at all! And certainly I failed to produce the standard of image you have here..
Like you, I learned that fog ain't the best for togging and also that a little dabble in Photoshop can lift a dull image rather splendidly.

You've really raised the bar this week. My favourite out of your 52 so far!

Conceptually it's spot on for the theme and really well executed. I don't mind at all that it's been done in PP rather than in camera - it's the end result that we get to see, and as long as you got a sense of achievement from doing it and you've learnt something that's all that matters.

Thanks, it took me ages to get the right amount of blur, in fact I guesstimate the photo took a minute and the processing took about 15 !

I gave up trying to do it in camera, I just could not get the hang of driving, aiming and shooting all at the same time :nuts:

Ta. I've played about with it in PS a few times now and I can't get the contrast right without blowing huge areas :(

It appears I did learn a very important lesson (not one I am particularly happy about though) There are occasions when PS can really save your backside! I really hope I haven't raised the bar too far though.

Glad it hit the spot, I drove past the sign on my way home from work and nearly crashed when I spotted it. Odd thing is for a split second I didn't even know why I'd stopped !!

Thanks a lot, I really struggled with an idea for this week and the ones I did come up with I could'nt pull off so I'm actually doubly pleased with this submission.
 
Simple but effective for speed, I like it.

I had a similar idea of snapping the finishing post at York racecourse but when I got their it wasnt quite the photo I thought.

I didn't have a clue when this was announced, but as the week went on I was soon having to stop myself coming up with ideas, Tractors ploughing, Closed down shops, CCTV cameras and/or signs, the list went on and on. Sadly so did the amount of work I've had to do this week. I've just snatched 10 minutes in town at the market prior to going back out to work and sadly this is all I could manage. I've had a play in PS with saturation and vibrance for no other reason than I felt like it. I know it's poor, but at least it doesn't require a shoehorn or a crowbar. Thanks for looking and sorry to have wsted your time with a soft, poorly composed and uninspiring picture.
 
Chin up. At least you didn't skip a week and I've taken shots a lot lot worse. I quite like the DOF you've chosen also.
 
I really like your thinking on this theme Rob. It's a shame that you didn't get out to shoot any of them because any one of those would have been a great take on the theme.
The one that you ended up with really isn't that bad though :)

Conceptually it works on 2 levels - giving flowers as a present and Daffodils signifying the present time with Spring on its way.
And technically, the composition is good and the DoF has worked to give some depth to the shot.

I'm struggling a bit with the focal point. The focus seems to be on the leaves rather than a flower head or the sign . . . but it's really not as poor as you think. I have far worse shots on my hard drive.
 
It would have been nice to see the sign in focus but the colours are really warm and the photo has a nice spring feel to it.
 
Liking your shot for Speed - definitely fits the theme well.

Nice vibrant colours for Present. Roll on Spring :thumbs:
 
I really like your week 6 image. Great colours and I think the DoF has been put to good use to make the sign secondary to the daffodil at the front. I'd be happy with that shot :thumbs:
 
Speed is a brilliant idea! I really like that!

I like the daffodil shot too - makes me look forward to Spring-time :)
