Robs 52 for 2010 - Week 17 Peace

Chin up. At least you didn't skip a week and I've taken shots a lot lot worse. I quite like the DOF you've chosen also.

I really like your thinking on this theme Rob. It's a shame that you didn't get out to shoot any of them because any one of those would have been a great take on the theme.
The one that you ended up with really isn't that bad though :)

Conceptually it works on 2 levels - giving flowers as a present and Daffodils signifying the present time with Spring on its way.
And technically, the composition is good and the DoF has worked to give some depth to the shot.

I'm struggling a bit with the focal point. The focus seems to be on the leaves rather than a flower head or the sign . . . but it's really not as poor as you think. I have far worse shots on my hard drive.

It would have been nice to see the sign in focus but the colours are really warm and the photo has a nice spring feel to it.

Liking your shot for Speed - definitely fits the theme well.

Nice vibrant colours for Present. Roll on Spring

I really like your week 6 image. Great colours and I think the DoF has been put to good use to make the sign secondary to the daffodil at the front. I'd be happy with that shot

Speed is a brilliant idea! I really like that!

I like the daffodil shot too - makes me look forward to Spring-time :)

Good take on this weeks theme. Don't feel to bad I would be happy with your photo

Thanks for taking time to look guys. I've deliberately not been visiting my thread or even looking at the picture for a few days just to see what my reaction would be when I did see it again after a while and y'know what? I actually like it. I like the depth of the colours, I like the light and I like the subject matter. I even like the focus (or lack of it). Yes I managed to focus on the leaves rather then on the flower head (not my intention) . What would have been nice would have been to get down lower so the flower was framed by the card. I may try and set something up at home. Anyway, once again thanks for your comments they really help to encourage me to carry on and hopefully to better my skills.

Rob

I quite enjoyed your 52, must check back here more often. Each shot is so different it makes for quite an interesting read. My favourites of the bunch are the £3 accordian player , not sure which version I prefer, B&W probably, but the reds are really nice in the colour version. I also quite like the DOF and vibrancy of present. It's better than you give it credit for. Really dreamy DOF feel to it.

like the vibrant colours.. spring is on its way! :)

good DOF, like that the sign isn't the main focus point

Rob, it works well for me. Clear and colourful, and the focus works on the lovely spring daff. The colours seem a little strong to me, but that could be my eyes or monitor...

I don't think your 'present' shot is as poor as you think it is, Rob.
I like the vibrance of the daffs, indicationg that spring is on its way. The dof works for me - I like that you have made the flower (the present) and not the sign (how many sovs one would have to shell out to give it) the point of focus.

Not bad at all.

Well this week as soon as I saw the theme I knew EXACTLY who I wanted to shoot.
I really wanted to try something different, so armed with a Sigma flash unit that isn't compatible with my Camera (it needs chipping apparently), a homemade light box and a few torches I managed to produce the following. I'm never going to be able to produce images to the standard of most on here but I really enjoy trying to do the best I can.

Anyway, I've two submissions this week because I'm proud of both efforts:

Of the two I prefer #1 the DOF isn't too harsh for one thing.

I'm also going to keep playing around with this over the coming weeks.

Thanks for looking.

Rob

Hahaha - nice Rob, I like them both. Looking forward to seeing more.

Got to admit I'm completely stuck this week!

Nice efforts :) no.2 stands out more for me though. Great composition and use of depth of field. Also the background and surface look whiter.

You really think the DOF works? I would have liked it to be a little less blurred.
Thanks for the crit though I need more light I think.

Thanks very much, I know what it's like to sit there staring at a theme with nothing but white noise in your head where there should be 10000000's of ideas, last week really stumped me.
Thanks for dropping in and passing comment and good luck

Hi Rob, great idea, personally i would like to see a full dof on the 2nd shot as i think they all need to be in focus. number 1 the same i think. Id like to see an edit as i think you are on to a winner here. Either way i had a little chuckle when i saw them.

another thought would it be better as a darker lit scene/ darker background with the torch like a spotlight, bump up the aperture and leave it on a longer exposure and move the torch around to light up the scene.

Thanks Chris, I'll certainly take onboard what you've suggested and have another go later in the week. I'll be sure to let you know how I get on.

Really like your idea and I've gone for a similar sort of thing (without realising).
I like the 2nd image but would prefer it if the DOF wasn't so harsh

great interpretation of the theme, and a nice shot, i prefer #1 too

What a good idea. I like the second one best. I prefer that DOF. On the first, I think it would be better to have the guys at the back either more focussed or less focussed. I don't think the guy in front stands out quite enough. I also prefer the all white background on the second.

Well done - bang on theme.

Jenny

Arrrrrrrrgh ! Guess who was still up faffing with Lego men until the wee hours despite the fact he had an ealy start this morning?

Anyway, tried again.

I'm leaning toward The chase, there's more 'right' with it. No more submissions now but I will be popping to the art shop over the weekend and getting some Black card for my light box and playing some more.

Tried again as you suggested with less DOF - It works :D

great interpretation of the theme, and a nice shot, i prefer #1 too

Thanks a million Peter.

I really struggled to get the shot I wanted, I think I need to get more creative or inventive. The set up was on the dining room table, I couldnt get the frame I wanted with either the 50mm or my 30mm and ended up using the 70-200 from the other end of the room whilst the kids 'wanged' toches all over the place! Anyway, I had another go and am far happier with my second attempt, well one of them anyway ;) Thanks for your comments, helps keep my enthusiasm up.

Is that your Lego, or the kids? Come on, be honest now haha. I like them all, but I think the guy stood on his head that should be the main focal point doesn't stand out enough because of all the people behind. Maybe if they were parted down the middle so the head standing on guy was against the white background?

Are any of them available for my shot? I'll go through their agents if needed lol

well that stuffed up my idea back to the drawing board  nice shot by the way

Ok, I admit, it's my step sons lego - but I bought it for him ;)
I wanted to keep the focus/emphasis off the dancer as the theme was people, not person, same with the guy being chased. I'm certainly going to keep playing with the whole lego thing though so will keep your suggesions in mind. Thanks for the comments and for taking time out to visit and read my drivvel ;)

well that stuffed up my idea back to the drawing board  nice shot by the way

Noooo, do it, I'd love to see what a proper job looks like.

really great take on this weeks theme, i think i prefer the chase a little more over the street performer , but both are great.

i keep meaning to pick up some little lego me to try something like this but cant believe how expensive the little bloody things are

still , great job

This was my first thought too! I love the head spin shot.

Nice simple idea for present, the DOF works well. It is a shame it was a little rushed and not quite sharp but at least you made the effort to go out and shoot.

The lego stuff is great, lots of fun. I like the first chase idea with the pack out of focus and the convict sharp.

All 4 of these are brilliant. I love the idea and I love the way that you've posed the Lego Men.
I'm not sure if it's my eyes, but the lighting seems better on the second two - did you do anything differently?

If I had to pick a favourite it would have to be "The Chase". I think the DoF works best in this one. Just enough focus on the convict to give him some clarity, but the crowd are really clear. With the "Street Performer" I'm finding that he's getting a little bit lost in the background.

A really good week for you though, and I think that all 4 have their own merits

All of those lego shots are fantastic

Makes me want to rush out and buy some to try it out myself.

Thanks, I really struggled to get the compostion right and am a little disapointed that the chase picture didn't look like a chase, perhaps I should have left his handcuffs on.

This was my first thought too! I love the head spin shot.

Ta, amazing what can be achieved with a little blob of white-tac.

 i didn't realise you were aiming for a chase scene Rob, i thought it was meant to be something like a Michael Jackson video with a dance troupe behind

erm.... it was a dance troupe ;) I was afraid of this but I guess it can't be helped, ta for your comment and crit though, always appreciated.

I struggled to compose these Sarah and honestly can't remember what I did. The kids helped with the lighting (wanged torches everywhere) so I'll try to get them to remember what they did ;)

Cheers for the posotive comment, it really help keep me focused.

I'm hooked on photographing lego men now !!

Well done Rob. The Chase is great and really made me chuckle. Love the way the focus is on the mob and not the runner.

Cheers, Rob

Brilliant Rob.

One of my thoughts for this week was lego people. The kids hadn't got any though (lost in the mists of time) so I went with plasticine. I'm glad I did now as i would have struggled to match your shots.

The winner for me is the chase version 2. I'm not a big fan of the shallow depth of field in the first one. The colours in this really pop

hehe, love the lego men! Street performer is a bit out of focus, but I like the chase

I saw far too many members of the village people in your first dancer shot and I also thought the first chase attempt was a reenactment of thriller :) Chase 2 is the winner for me though (and apparently everyone else) :)

good stuff... the chase wins it for me too.. that convict looks very much like elvis in jailhouse rock ;)

The first two were actually p*ss poor attempts compared to the last two were'nt they? I've learnt to slow down and take my time this week, something I am not very good at. I'm very happy with the chase but then I had to go and dig out the stormtroopers and some black card :(

Ta muchly

Ha-ha, thanks a million now I know why I wasn't too keen on the first two

 He does rather doesn't he. I hope I get to use him again.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to drop in and offer their support, register their interest and offer their thoughts, comment and crit. It really does mean a lot to me.

Inventive use of Lego people there Rob. Not sure how I managed to miss the thread update...

The lighting you're trying is clearly making a difference, with all four shots well lit. For me, the first "Chase" is the best of the bunch. I like it that the jailbird is in sharp focus and the chasing crowd are blurred. Works better for me than the 2nd chase where the "main subject" is OOF. Just my humble opinion though!

Lego is ace.

Ian.

Wow... how many Rob :D... I think 2 and the chase work best, the street performer in both just isn't clear enough from the background, perhaps put lighter coloured lego people behind him ?

A good idea and take on the theme.

Absolutely love your breakdancing Lego minifigs! How about doing a little Moc of that Run DMC/Jason Nevins video?

Ha, very inventive:)

It's Chase #2 for me. I think that the image is about everybody in the shot and so the chasers do need to be kept in focus, as you have done.

In Street Performer I would expect the crowd to suffer at the hands of a dash of dof because it's the performer who is the important person here and, as you said, this rather reduces its suitability for a people theme.
Nontheless, I still liked it.
