Robin Williams RIP

Sorry

No grief here. I did not know him personally.

Sadness yes , but based on a loss of someone who has made me laugh for 40+ years and who I looked forward to the 'what next'. He visited me in my home many times to make me laugh and to be challenged. Sometimes he shocked me but mainly I laughed and looked forward to his next visit. If I was too busy to spend time with him there ws always another time.

For me personally his suicide triggered memories of 2 people I knew, who in the depths of despair from depression, took their own lives. At that point the past pops up and the shock of the past returns for a while.

This country has just remembered the loss of over 700,000 men in 4 years of a pointless war during 1914-18 with public ceremonies which included many tears from strangers or from the young who may not have any memories of family members who knew those that died... karaoke grief in those cases? You decide.

In following Lynton's lead are you creating a "karaoke disdain' crowd outbutst?

That said, thank you for your input..... it allowed me to have a retrospective on 2 friends who took their own lives and a Great Grandfather who survived being wounded and gassed in Belgium in 1917 (they called it Passchendale) only to spend a long time slowly suffering till his death in 1964. I was young enough not to know his suffering but old enough to have met him.Every year on a Sunday in November, his name is read out in church and complete strangers pray for his soul and put poppies around a small cross with his name on.......

I think it fair to say that WW I and WW II had a far deeper impact. I tried for ages to understand what my grandad did in WW II.. Home guard (he was 38 at the outbreak, so pretty much too old to serve in the army/navy/or RAF)... however whilst a gas fitter and also serving on the railway he regularly went down to London during the blitz with my then 3 to 7 yr old uncle.... He would never talk about it...

Apologies for the thread hijack..

Explain please.

The \/ key on my laptop, along with left arrow and windows ha\/e come off, i am relying on forward and backward slash to substitute...

It wasn't part of the message to you, it's my sig on mobile app but it comes through as normal text not smaller and fainter, which is a shame

TBH what I don't "get" is, the fact that people have no interest in a thread, or subject, but post
for, the only reason I can see is to get a "re-action"
Of course I wouldn't go as far as to say that they were trolling, every one is entitled to an opinion one way or another.

My opinion is, I can't cant stand football, I personally think its a waste of time and money.
(and more)
But I don't jump all over the threads with negative comments.

So back on track.

Its a shame that the "media sharks" seem to be circling, looking for anything newsworthy,
and its also a shame that they seem to be mostly (now) focusing on the negative "stories"
Its funny how these bits and pieces were not news worthy / relevant, while he was alive.

My grandfather mever talked about his experiences but to yhis day whatever he did is appreciated by others in some small way.

My illustration was only to exemplify that we all have the humanity we all have for those we both know as friends and family, strangers we don't know (service personnel on wars abroad etc) and through entertainment streams and personality cults (Royal Family).

All have validity to some and none to others.

You and I share some elements of family experience being old enough to have family who served their country in sometimes extraordinary ways. My dad was barely old enough to be in WWII but was in the Merchant Navy heading of and returning on the convoys to Russia returned unscathed but lost three friends who joined up together
He grieved for them and all the others he did not know. Common experience Common humanity.

Generations change. We have knowledge of over 400 service personnel killed in the years of Afghanistan. WwI saw thousands killed in a day at the height of battle.

So modern generations are inurred to tragedy at huge levels. A root through the stories of the horror of the "Pals Battalions" in WW I may go some way to balancing the feelings for Robin Williams's suicide. We, thankfully, do not share such levels of inter family and infra community loss that Sheffield (amongst others) saw with the Hallams Pals Battalions.

It means Pete isn't sure if he has family I would assume.

Oh.. Fox news are up to their usual ****wittery again.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ing-Robin-Williams-coward-killing-myself.html

Spot on - I don't know anything about the guy except that he was in some good films (and some awful ones) - on the comments above I've no problem with people saying as above - my issue (as Lyntons) is with all the oh woe is me chest beating on FB etc - the way some people are carrying on you'd think he was their dad.

and Fox News :bang: there's an Oxymoron - personally I tend to see it as a verb, anything they cover you can guarantee they are going fox the news right up

.

As someone said earlier its a discussion forum - the reason people post is to express opinions - the opinion that I (and Lynton I assume) hold on this subject may not be the same as yours but that doesn't make us trolls - it just means that our opinions on " Robin Williams dies" are that its very sad for his family/friends etc but the gnashing of teeth and tearing of hair being carried out by people (particularly on FB) who came no closer to his life than watching Dead poets, or Good Morning Vietnam is totally out of proportion to the event

No one said you (or Lynton) were (a) trolls.
Neither has there been any wringing of hands or tearing hair out in this this thread as far as I can see.
Just a few respectful comments, and memories.
Some from peoples childhoods, some from their children's childhoods,
having sat through, countless times, and are almost word perfect on Aladdin Hook et al.

Its funny how these bits and pieces were not news worthy / relevant, while he was alive.

It's what the media do (basically because its what sells papers/advertising space) - so end of the day the public only have themselves to blame " Robins secret tragedy - his struggle with depression pages 4, 5, and 6" sells more papers/magazines than " remember how funny robin was in GMVN"

a great talent lost, who will be greatly missed. If his death stops someone else from taking their own life then it wont have been in vain.

Now being reported that he was also in the early stages of parkinsons disease.

Yeah i just heard that too on the news, poor b****r:(

That's really kind of you thank you but when the V key came off I could still use it but now I can't, I'm assuming I've damaged the actual base sensor bit for that key?
Gremlin was kind enough to send me a wireless mouse and keyboard but I can't get the keyboard to work, I fear it got damaged in transit which is sad and annoying for both myself and gremlin :(

Please don't pick on or insult my dead 'V' ..thank you :)

T., try searching for virtual keyboard. Might find it.

If all else fails, try your local tip/recycling centre for a USB keyboard. I have one somewhere that I got from Smiths for under a fiver - would cost that to post it up to you though. (I might be rude but I'm quite nice really!)
