Couldn't agree more!. If you can't find shred of human compassion in your heart for a man who - in spite of being rich/famous/talented - was clearly unwell and who I now understand had also been recently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease as well, then really, something has gone very wrong somewhere. Some people need to take a long hard look at themselves ....

and how exactly does posting "RIP Robin you'll be missed" on a photo forum (or facebook) show human compassion for the man ? - its not like he, or his close family, are going to be reading it
Lyntons point wasnt that he doesnt feel compassion for Robin Williams - it was that he doesnt need to brag about feeling compassion for him (or any other dead celebrity) by making it public on facebook ec, or for that matter acting as though its a huge personal loss of the same scale as losing a family member.
IMO the people who need to take a long hard look at themselves are the ones who are using the death of someone with whom they had no personal connection as an ego driven mission to demonstrate how compassionate/grief stricken/emotional they are (and gain likes/freinds etc) - of course that doesnt apply to everyone but it definitely applies to some

And Lynton could ha\/e just kept out of the thread and let those that want to show there compassion do so without 'crap posts' ......... seems a polite thing to do IMO!
It has nothing to do with likes/friends and some such nonsense, that in itself is just a ridiculous thing to e\/en think...

so lynton isnt allowed to express his opinion then (not withstanding that when asked he did set up a new thread for the discussion - this one - which was promptly hijacked into being yet another rip robin thread).
the point of the wider discussion this thread was intended for was 'why' do people want to show their compassion, and as pertinently who do the think they are showing it to ? ( and if its not about likes/freinds etc why do so many people jump on every RIP bandwagon like so many sheep - not so much here, but on facebook someone could make up a celeb to start an RIP about and you'd get people bleating about 'how much he meant to them' )
Its a bit like that 'how stupid people think FB works' meme - posting an RIP message doesn't actually show compassion in any meaningful way - if people want to mark Robin Williams passing , why not do so in a tangible way like with a donation to a depression or parkinsons charity , a FB post doesnt actually acheive anything other than "look at me" - which is why I'd say that for some people (I'm not saying you, or indeed anyone here) I'd say it is a cynical exercise in getting more likes and shares to prop up shaky self esteem , and those people know it deep down inside - though whether they have the balls to look honestly at themselves is another question

Of course e\/eryone is entitled to their opinion but i do belie\/e there is a time and place for it.... the forum is a discussion place yes, but not ALL threads HA\/E to be...... certainly not any RIP threads.....
Lynton could ha\/e more importantly ignored thread and go find something he does like..
Nobody is stupid it is ob\/ious to e\.eryone, Lynton included that it would start something.....

I'm not putting down anyone who wants to show compassion - what i'm saying is making an RIP post is an empty gesture and doesnt show compassion in any meaningful way- as i said earlier if anyone wants to 'show compassion' to Mr Williams and his family by all means do so - but make it meaningful and tangible , don't just hit post and feel like you've 'done something'
Its also deeply offensive and insulting to suggest that either Lynton or I don't have compassion - just because we don't feel the need to tell the world about it.

That is actually quite laughable, at no point ha\/e i suggested yourself or Lynton ha\/e no compassion........ so i am not sure why you feel the need to be so 'deeply offended and insulted'............. which i am pretty sure you are not but makes such a great theatrical read........... bit like these so called o\/er the top posts on fb and such you keep mentioning... NO?
My point was if someone wants to post RIP threads and others want to say something, let them, no need for this utter ridiculousness, it may be empty to you but not to them, who are you to decide what is an empty gesture..

Why do you think compassion has died in those that don't (post RIP comments) - as I said above its ultimately pointless as the deceased and their family will never see it, compassion (and all feelings for that matter) are something you keep inside - its not measured by how much you (that's the generic "you not you personally) shout about it on facebook
and if they aren't posting for attention then why are they doing it ? (given that the deceased will never see it etc) - you'll note (or at least you will if you read my post properly) that I didn't say everyone who posts an RIP post was attention whoring - I was referring only to those who are lamenting the loss as though he was their father/husband/best friend rather than a celebrity that they didn't even know.

I was gutted when John Lennon was shot, such a terrible waste of a life of someone who had so much talent. Death effects people in different ways. If Facebook or TP was around back then I probably would of posted something. I remember when Elvis died kids at school went in wearing black armbands and having memorial services in the playground. I wasn't keen on Elvis but I respected their grief. This is social media, it's just a new way if communicating how you feel.

I always said the same about censorship on the TV, you have a choice of channels and an off button
