RIP threads...

:D
Not necessarily. Saying what you think doesn't mean a free for all.
I could sit here thinking you're a complete tool, but if I started a thread on it, I'd have to ban myself.
No sir, you would be applauded.....

Come to that if you do believe - surely he'd be in heaven/paradise/a better place/ Valhalla / reincarnated as a hippo or whatever (depending what you believe) so it still seems pointless to wish him to "rest in peace"

We could get into the heavy stuff here - (as you say), it depends what you believe in ………………..

I'd rather leave it as RIP Robin Williams and remember him and his films ……… you do not have to say anything if that is the way you feel

Sure - on the RIP Robin Williams thread - but this thread is a discussion of why people start RIP threads/ similar posts on FB in general

Joking aside though - the reason this thread exists is because it was indicated to Lynton that some felt it was distasteful to have this discussion on the RW RIP thread so he respected their wishes by starting this one instead to discuss the subject in the round

which is "fair enough" and a very good way to deal with it without going OTT, I hope

or why they use FB for many thing - I have only seen what has been shown to me by my kids, when they were kids, but they still use FB in their late 20's early 30's ………..

sorry to take up two postings but I cannot do this double quote thing

I generally use FB to talk to friends in Oz, South Africa and USA - its a damn site cheaper than the phone (and Skype isn't an option on my woefully slow internet) - the annoyance factor with absolute trivia , oh woe is me XYZ has popped his clogs , and even more so so and so needs two buckets of dung in farmland or some such is fast persuading me to find another option

Feel free - we haven't had a decent spam thread for a while ;) ( I'd tend to view myself as one of those big manly tools, like a pile driver, or nail gun)

No no....just tool covers it.

And of course what they had for breakfast & where / what they are about to drink and where.
Just bin 'em. Simples :)

Some we win some we lose.
Some we spot some we don't.
You know where the button is Matt (y)

Meh....if I'm honest I cannot really be bothered anymore, RIP to my enthusiasm, some have successfully killed it

Well I'm sorry to hear that Matt,
the option remains open should you change your mind at any time :)

I'm going back to the Bird Forum for a "bit of life" although it is very quiet these days!!!

Talk about a load of whiny whingey old grannies, all off you:p...

I guess i could ha\/e stated all you whiny whingy grannies excluding Y\/ but including any tools around:D

but that would have needed a working v key ;)

I think you should create an annual TP version of "The Purge" where you allow a 24 hour free for all. That way you could say what we all think without the fear of having to ban yourself.

Something along those lines has been suggested more than once,
but think of the ill feeling that would exist after the 24 hours were up.
Far too many people bear grudges for that to work I fear ;)

gets my vote - theres more than one person on this thread who' benefit from a few home truths

see that's the bit I don't get - Showing respect to who ?

The man himself is dead so he obviously doesn't care
Its very doubtful that his family or close friends will ever see such a thread (or that they'd really give a toss either way at the moment)
So basically you (and I'm not singling you out - I mean any such poster) are telling other people who didn't know him either that you wish him to 'rest in peace'
which comes back to Lynton's original question of what that hopes to achieve.

As someone who doesn't believe in god or an afterlife I find the whole concept of "resting in peace" baffling anyway - once you're dead you're dead you aren't resting anywhere as the personality has ceased to exist and the corpse is either rotting or cremated.

Yep unless you go into the big fire, you are worm-fodder!

Can't say it affected me at all ... I didn't know the bloke. Twitter users, on the other hand, were reported to be shocked to hear that Robbie Williams had died and that came as a shock to Robbie.

I always find the death of someone I know difficult to articulate, to express in words the sympathy one feels and therefore agree with not understanding how it can be done about someone you don't really know.

Even with someone I do know, I try out various words in my head and they just sound like hollow gestures. There are two or threee phrases which get repeated but the reality is that there is nothing you can write or say which can help.

Lots of my friends were putting comments on Facebook and it got to the point where I thought I should to (and did) for fear of being thought of as uncaring if I didn't - which is quite ridiculous really.

I also thought that the last thing he would be doing was looking at Facebook. However, four days later, he has responded to the comments.

Steve.

A true artist indeed, never one to neglect his fans :)
