RIP threads...

As someone who doesn't believe in god or an afterlife I find the whole concept of "resting in peace" baffling anyway - once you're dead you're dead you aren't resting anywhere as the personality has ceased to exist and the corpse is either rotting or cremated.

Agreed but your particles are being recycled.... :) so essentially "resting in peace".... romantic maybe but not religious in its statement.

romantic yes, - but look at it another way you are contribuiting to global warming (by releasing carbon based gases) that aint peaceful.

My freind jamie has the best one liners for what he wants to happen after his death - my favorite two being

a) " Pete if I die in Helmand I want you to tell my brother in law that I buried £10k in an amunition box under his lawn" You buried £10k under your brother in laws lawn ? WTF " Of course not, but he's an asshole and it will serve him right "

b) When I die I want to be dressed as superman and have my corpse thrown out of a plane

RIP.......Indeed. This is an expression of hope in the absence of fact! for that person who has died, whoever it may be.
It is of course Not true for some and maybe for many for as we know the only way we can have a glimpse of whatever awaits those that are no longer living is to look at what is on offer in the form of religion. In the norm... man made and pointless. It is up to the individual to discern what he or she must do to prepare for eternity, if indeed one thinks there maybe something after death.

For me, I have a faith in Christ and for me death has lost its sting! I have been to many funerals over the years, some of whom I have no knowledge of their conviction in a Savior so I can only leave that to God, some of my family members are included in that list. However the people who have passed away who have been followers of Christ. I can say that those funerals were different! they were more celebrations of the life than mourning the death. Some of these people were very young, yet still a rejoicing was witnessed, Why? The promises in the Bible and for nothing else. What awaits those who have died in Christ is favorable over anything else.

Death is seldom talked about and we lack an understanding as a society, because in my opinion those we trust have little to say on it. I mean its rather difficult to be an authority on something we have no real knowledge on outside of a faith based life. For me this is where my faith takes away any anxiety about the subject.

If Marcel or the mods ban RIP threads I'm going to start a thread "RIP RIP Threads"
And if that one gets banned you'll have to start a RIP, RIP RIP, RIP thread.

Nope that's far too complicated, we'll leave the status quo (and I'm not talking about the group either :p)

Whatever you want......... :exit:

You'll be posting pictures of matchstick men soon...

Every day, all over the world, people die. Sometimes it's someone I've heard of and sometimes it's someone whose work I've enjoyed. Thankfully rarely, it's someone I've known well and even loved. EVERY ONE OF THEM, including those I've never heard of and don't know have passed deserves to rest in peace, whatever their race religion etc..

BZZZT!!!! That was Neil Diamond!

You must have been living on an island not to know that

True, BUT the SQ song entitled simply "Caroline" does include the line "sweet Caroline"...

you're just being mean girl

if it floods where i am ,,,,the towns gone !

Get a room you two FFS :p

makes me wonder how many comments would be put on an R.I.P thread with condolences and the like if it was a member of TP that passed away?

after all i dont know anyone on here personally ( unless my brother is still a member!) but i would still most likely post some kind of message of condolence.

ive been a member of another non photography realted forum for over 10 years now.. and in that time we have had several members pass away under various circumstances ( ill health, old age etc ) . none of them i knew personally but i still posted a comment and that forum even has a section dedicated to members who have passed for people to "pay there respects".

Photography is one way of conveying news stories through its images, and in the same vein forums are a place that no matter the forums main subject matter there are generally sections to discuss non forum daily life events . people like to share news, gossip, express there thoughts and opinions, discuss matters of state ( or the dreaded religion which always seems to cause a kerfuffle ) so if someone passes away be it famous or otherwise then as soon as you get 2 or more people together it becomes a topic of discussion.
I posted a comment about Robin Williams.. i know hes family and friends arent going to see it. but still as a forum with an OOF section and as a public figure who entertained millions i wanted to express my sadness at hes loss. simply because he amused and entertained me on more than one occasion with hes work and for that i'll miss seeing what more he could have offered.

felt the same when british Author James herbert died having read all hes books, and im sure i'll post something when others died who have in some way or another had an effect on my life in some tiny immeasurable way.

Death and Taxes.. we just cant avoid em

Totally agree with this. In the case of Robin Williams especially. I didn't know him, I did admire his talent and his work, but clearly he was a man who took his own life as an escape from his inner demons. To do that he must have been in awful torment, so I hope he is now at peace. RIP Robin.

there's been one death on tp that I know about - the response was large but possibly not as large as for the average celeb thread

I'm going back to the Bird Forum for a "bit of life" although it is very quiet these days!!!

Yep, the sowed grain is now being reaped Bill.

You know what's sad, I have a feeling that because Lynton posted that original no sympathy blah blah thread, any RIP threads now will head the same way and people posting 'so what' posts in them.. Not good!

Please don't pick on or insult my dead 'V' ..thank you :)
