RIP Neil Armstrong

Utterly sad new :( :'( :(, but such is the order of life.

Really sad, can only imagine what it must have been like to be the first person to step on a new planet, amazing! The fear of the unknown and to look back on earth. But I do love the whole space thing so it might just be geeky me

One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind:1st:

Nobody will ever be able to do what he did, very sad news indeed

RIP Neil

Sad news indeed :(

"I put up my thumb ... and my thumb blotted out ... Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small."

Neil Armstrong 1930-2012

He's taken the biggest step of all, RIP

I was 9 when he walked on the Moon, our school set up a TV and we got to watch it live, I was totally overawed and I think it helped give me a love of all things 'space'.

Such sad news :(

A true 20th Century legend.

RIP

That happened at my school. I was 9 too.

Normally I don't give a **** about celebrity deaths, but I am genuinely saddened by Neil Armstrong's death. Nowadays people use the word "hero" all too easily, but to me the 12 moonwalkers were the real deal.
Armstrong proved his mettle in a Gemini spacecraft, saving his and Dave Scott's life. Listening to the audio of the approach and landing of the Eagle, where he had to contend with 1201 and 1202 program alarms, showed the whole world how cool he was under duress.
Yes this man was a real, genuine, inspiring hero, and it's very very rare that I think thay about anyone.
A sad day indeed.

That leaves 8 moonwalkers still alive. 8 men who literally have walked on another celestial body. Nothing can top that.

A sad day, One of the great pioneers, without men like him we'd still be using horses

My Grandmother was born in 1911 and died in 2005

When I think about the things she saw in her lifetime it's mind boggling.

She was born 8 years after the Wright brothers first flew, and the year before the Titanic sank, lived through 2 world wars, cars that went from 5mph to 300mph, planes that could barely fly to Neil Armstrong walking on the Moon to Mars rovers.

The 20th century was a fascinating time to be alive, I wonder what children born in 2011 will witness

RIP a man who never sought fame but will, no doubt, remain one of the most famous humans to ever walk the earth.

Sad news for sure, his legend will live on.

but personally I don't believe anybody has walked on the moon.

Please don't show such disgusting disrespect by bringing your pathetic conspiracy theories into this thread. If you want to discuss that kind of tripe, then create a thread and I will humour you.
Unbelievable.

I don't believe that is disrespectful in the slightest. The moon landings have always been discussed in depth as to whether they happened or not.

As said it is a sad day as whether the moon landings were real or faked Neil Armstrong was a true and genuine inspiration to generations and a name known globally.

He is a person whose name people remember but as with any forum everyone is entitled to there own opinion.

It's tantamount to saying "his legend will live on, but he was a ****ing liar".
That seems pretty disrespectful to me.

I really hope this thread stays focused on the man, and isn't a magnet for the conspiracy nuts. If they do want to talk about their ideas, then one of them should create a thread about it.

Not at all, I'm on the undecided camp. At the time the race was on and it's ether it was a real event or not his actions are part of one of the biggest things to happen (or not) in living memory. No matter whether it actually happened he will always be remembered as the man who did and as said earlier inspired millions of people and drove advances forward...

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and whether you believe it happened or not the man will always be respected and a true legend. He's no being called a liar as in reality it makes no difference whether it be fact or fiction, his acts changed the lives of a lot of people.

Sorry not out to disrespect or offend anyone.

It's always sad when iconic figures pass away.

Some were saying there are only a few moon walkers left, I just expressed an opinion.

For those that are interested in learning more about his famous voyage, and those of the other Apollo crews; go and seek out Andrew Chaikin's brilliant book "A Man on the Moon".
Also many hours of Apollo radio transmissions are available in iTunes, and they make for fascinating listening.

Just a pity some idiotic American can't tell the difference between a national hero astronaut and a singer. Now that is disrespectful.

Someone's head will roll for that !

CNN Internationl's screen graphics have been a bit weird tonight. Stuff like "Armstrong awarded presidential medal of honour" directly above "Armstrong to be stripped of 7 tour victories"!

I think the boat has sailed in relation to those people that think the moon landings didn't happen! We now have images taken from earth orbit of the landing sites which even show the flags and subsequent shadows. Rather difficult to fake the sites on the actual moon.

Please keep this on topic.

Even at the very heart of the cold war Russia never once question his achievements, one of very very few people that the whole population of earth will have heard of, a true legend in every sense of the word.

I paid my respects but I'm always open to a bit of humour. Saw this comment on another forum.

It's not been a good weekend for Armstrongs. I'd be worried were I a small panted 70s stretchy toy. A sad day for jazz trumpeting

Or the lunar laser reflectors placed on the surface by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin and used by scientists until 2009.

These were brave men who took huge risks, true international heroes.

Good for you. :bang:

RIP Neil Armstrong.

Words cant explain how sad i feel over his passing.

Sad news, when I was a kid my heroes weren't footballers or pop stars, they were the Apollo astonauts - genuine heroes who did something remarkable.

Yet despite his amazing achievements (apart from the space missions he also flew the awesome X-15) Neil Armstrong seemed to be a modest, quiet man who simply wanted to get on with his life.

RIP

I remember it well, I was aged 10 sitting in Mrs Crofts class @ Parkate school in Watford when a tv was wheeled in by the caretaker & we were told " today children you'll see history being made"
Ever since that day, space has always held a fascination for me & I have watched all the Apollo missions.
RIP Mr Armstrong, you certainly inspired a 10 year old boy.

Very true Neil was not one of the shallow fake heroes of today, but a man who took real risks to push the human race into the future. Never boasted, never tried to be any form of celebrity, a person who we should all look up to and think that's how to live your life and how to behave.

There are very few dates in history that people remember forever, and for many many people two dates will stand out for them.

July 21 1969
August 25 2012

If you don't belive :cuckoo: http://www.thekeyboard.org.uk/Did we land on the Moon.htm

Rip to a true hero of our time.

what we do in life echoes in eternity, quite cheesy but rarely more fitting.

A hero who had rejoined heaven. I was three years old when the landing occurred and although I can vaguely remember seeing the coverage on my parents black and white TV, I was too young to understand what it was all about at the time. It was more as something I've picked up on when I was a little bit older.
His name is up there with the greatest explorers in our history. Should we ever build a star ship that could travel at light speed to seek out other planets, I'd like to see it called USS Armstrong.

R.I.P. Neil Armstrong.
