RIP 6 brave Heros

Yes, apologies Terri. I got a bit involved, sensitive subject again.

Whoopsie - didnt read both pages so didnt see the big pink argument ending post- so ive self moderated

suffice to say that those who die in the service of our country (and i'd use that term widely to also include police officers , firemen, paramedics, lifeboat crewmen etc as well as forces) deserve our respect regardless of whether we (or indeed they if they could) would deem the actions leading up to their death as particularly heroic

I chose the wrong word i am sorry for that..
6 families are missing loved ones and some resort to this, remind me never to post anything like this again..

Terri you do NOT need to be sorry!

Alan

Alan Thanks....

truth is i am not sorry, What i am sorry about i let those comments get to me..

Terri

I spent 6 years in the Army and in a regiment that became a Yorkshire Regiment. I was at work when the deaths were announced and a colleague, who's son is serving, was in absolute distress because she didn't know whether her son was alive or dead.

Do I think all the serving soldiers are heroes....damn hard question, I'd have to say, and it pains me, no. I respect them, hell I do.

I feel for the families of those that have been killed in action and for those that are serving.

Its sad and for there family's but we ALL no the risks involved.................

RIP lads x

By all means pay your respects, but telling people that they cannot voice an opinion is in direct contravention of everything that the British Armed Forces stand for.

Well said!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I find that comment a little worrying, just to clarify when you joined up you were hoping that there would be some war torn region of the world you would get sent to? If that is right I hope you were part of the medical Corps and not a frontline soldier.

Troublew is though if you did not have people with that out look you would never have an army to protect you in the first place.

RIP those six soldiers

I just knew this was going to happen as soon as simon said that

Soilders train to fight, so its shouldnt be hard to understand why they might want to do for real what they train to do all the time. and the UK forces are all volunteers (which is a damn sight more ethical than having conscription and forcing people who don't want to serve to do so)

but lets not have that debate on this thread which is about 6 brave men who choose to serve their country and paid the ultimate price

You got to understand, the time i grew up in,the teacher at school used to call us cannon fodder or factory fodder, all we ever did was play war games,at 12 years old i was marched to the local army cadet place, and by 13 i could strip every gun apart, and put it together again in the dark.
We were kids, growing up in an age when ever man on the road where i lived had been in WWII.

Did you know in the WWI,their were up to One hurdred thousand, under age solider, one the frontline, and only an act of parilmemet got them home,at it wasnt out of kindness,it was because they needer them to do factory work for the war effort.

Turned into a circus again? No surprise unfortunately.

I've been in the RAF 20 years this month, what does it matter why someone joins up? These young men probably wanted to fight, that's their choice. They didn't want to die!

Let's just remember the six that died this week and their families.

Lets also remember the other families that will no doubt get told this week of their loss!

Sleep well gentlemen. x

I started the thread as a sign of respect, not for it to turn in to a huge debate that's all.

(as a back note my hubby is out that all bit it not as a solider this time) i wish your Nephew well.

Gumbo if its any consolation, they were all heros for simply joining up knowing they may be sent there, thats one brave signature and how many here would do it........probably not many.

Lets pull them all out of all warzones and let the terrorists carry on with attrocities like 9/11 and 7/7 and Bali......the world would soon ask for action again once the deathtoll of normal people in offices started to rise again, its really a catch 22 situation, we are either going to stop it forming or pull out and let the terrorists carry on from the 9/11 attack, or we can have a little pride in our lads that sign up to go and keep us safe in our little worlds

See what gets me is if I typed out the reply I really want to regarding that it would be seen as being disrespectful and rude and is normally why I stay out of these threads, the pro military/war side can say all they want because "our" people have died for it....anyway, going to move away from the keyboard now.

quite a few here have done it (not me , I was in and out before 2001) , but many of the lads further up (demilion, gregory etc) either are in , or were.

And i wouldnt dispute that we should respect and have pride in our forces - but if you ask the average squaddie if he thinks he's a hero you'll be met with either laughter or derision (or both)

whether we are acheiving a great deal in the afghan is a different question , but not one we should go into on this thread or indeed at all (given the prohibition on politics and religion)

There are two sides, for and against but like I say we are in catch 22, we need lads to join and go overseas to keep the peace, in a perfect world we wouldnt need them to protect us.....its a cruel world and we all share it unfortunately, but I stand by ny statement that all the lads over there are heros.......just for being there

Jimi - personally (and i say this as a pro millitary person) You have a perfect right to put your view , as demilion said earlier your right to do so is one of the principle tenets the army is fighting for. Whether its appropriate in this thread or on the forum is a different matter but as a mod you are better placed to make that call

(my position is that i support 'our boys' but I dont necessarily support the ****witted politicians who put them in harms way because they don't know what else to do )

so someone who's stacking boxes in the QMs stores at bastion is as much of a hero as someone who wins the VC for rescuing his colleagues under fire out in the hills ?

Whether the six brave men this thread is supposed to be about were heroes is something thats hard to say without knowing the circumstances.

As I said before anyone who serves their country deserves our respect, but attaching the hero appelation to everyone serving devalues it when used to describe those who really deserve it. (and damn it i'm debating again, sorry terri)

Pete.. i give up mate i really do. Ring ring Round 3!!!

Those stacking boxes are normally there because they have been in the field and had a very close call, so have been taken out of theatre for a reason, as you probably know...but only for a few short weeks or days, everyone out there is under a great deal of pressure and are constantly under threat, hell its a job getting there on a C130 doing a Tac landing these days with the RPGs coming at them, they deserve a hell of a lot more than you are giving them, technology moves on so does war and the Taliban have a lot more technology than we give them credit for.
