Replacing an Evoque.

I spoke to a near neighbour recently regarding the white line the council painted across his drive, sticks out about 2’ wider than the dropped kerb, seems if you ask nicely and explain idiots park too close they’ll do this for you to dissuade people stopping too near.

It's the people opposite who are the main problem. My next door neighbour used to habitually park on our front which did annoy me not so much because it made things difficult for me when I'm shuffling cars about but because he has 100m of clear space at the other side so why he didn't use it I don't know. I did get irritated and knocked on his door and asked him to park on the other clear side and since then it's a lot better and I can now often but not always put a car on our front while I back another out but the people opposite are still an obstacle just about every day. I have three cars and never leave them on the road and it baffles me while others in identical houses with identical drives do.

Nobody mentioned the Qashqai yet?

Yes. But maybe not he Duke.

I'll reread this thread to see if I've missed anything and then I think I'll start by looking at the the Evoque sized offerings, if hey have any, from...

Nissan (Qashqai.)
Kia,
Hyundai,
Mazda,
Subaru,
Honda.
Audi,
Volvo,
Mini.

Another Evoque should be in the mix too but an X-Trail like Mrs WW left abroad looks a bit on the big side but it is narrower...

I'll try and whittle it down to a fee serious contenders and then try and look at the dealerships.

Yes, of course, but it may be that we get a car for her and maybe a car for us too or maybe she wont get one at all, any combination is possible. If we get one for her it'll be a small automatic and my MX5 will go and if we get an SUV then obviously it'll replace my current one. She doesn't seem keen to drive the Evoque and I don't really know why as it's smaller than her X-Trail hence the possibility of getting a small car just for her but she changes her mind daily. The Kia Picanto looks good to me and it's one I've mentioned to her.

At the moment her main thing is that she's doesn't want anything to cost "too much" but I don't think she's fully aware of how much cars cost. We often drive past a car lot with a sign saying "Cars from £500" but I've tried to tell her that that wont get you much. We both have to get used to the idea that we can spend money a lot more feely than we have in the past.

PS to that.
She seems perfectly happy for me to buy anything I want and only seems to question the cost when it's for her. I suppose it's just the way each of us was brought up but I'm getting over it faster than her.

We looked at a Honda CR-V Hybrid in January but my wife thought it was too big, ditto the X-Trail and RAV4. We ended up with a Honda ZR-V Advance Hybrid, its a Civic in an SUV body. It drives like an EV but without the range anxiety. We are seeing 60 MPG so far.

If you are looking at a Q2, check out the Tiguan (1.5TSi) as well. We do have the lo-fi version, ie Golf 7 with the 1.4TSi and that is very economical.

Just to throw an odd ball in to the mix how about Lexus, their UX or NX range?

Think the RX would be too big from what you have said, but they have lots of toys in them and are very comfortable to drive. I got a used top of the range NX300H last year and it's great. However, coming from an Alfa it is very different drive and while you can shuffle it along once moving, it is not the quickest off the line.

I completely forgot about Lexus and I shouldn't have as an ex of mine had one and I spent a lot of time being chauffeured around in it. I'll see what's available and run them through that car size comparison thingy... UX looks the closest.

I'd never heard of these. I used to be car mad and knew pretty much every make and model on sale in the UK but not for years, so I'm really don't know what's available now.

I say if you like it just keep it a bit longer, put aside some money for rapiers every month

I'm "only" 63 but getting older by the day and as me and the Mrs are financially ok with no children we're started to talk about what plans we are going to make for our futures and for after one or both of us isn't here any more and cars are just a part of this but a part with a time limit as there may come a time when I/Mrs/we can't drive.

My Evoque is off to the dealer for an MOT and service on Monday and although I'm not expecting any horror stories from the dealer you never know and it is getting older and clocking up the miles. I do like the car so a lot of things are in the mix of things to think about.

I spent a bit of time today looking at the Lexus UX and Mazda CX-30 and there's a Mazda dealer within walking distance. I do have to say though that the interiors of these cars look to be a massive let down. It doesn't look like a second has been spent on them apart from to decide "We'll go with black everything." They seem to conform to everything negative I've said about car interiors in this thread. Sorry to fans :D this is just my opinion.

I want to get things formed in my mind before Mrs WW comes home and then I'll make a very short shortlist. I am surprised how reasonably priced these two cars are.

Bmw g31 xdrive...
different I know but 4wd and masses of space in the back

Just googled it and it seems to be an estate car and therefore not on my radar. Plus if it was it's waaaaaaaay tooooooo looooooooonnnnnggggg :D

X Drives are SUV types.

only reason I came up with it was sometimes it pays to think outside the box. Drive to France Italy and Spain in mine and it was great for long distances, 4 wheel drive , masses of storage space, economical and good quality build. I now have the G30 saloon. If you like the evoque then just get another one.
Or a great spec bmw X5 :)

G30 is a saloon, G31 is a touring version or there is the latest X5 for a full blown sports suv
You wouldn't be disappointed

As I said before , look at a Honda CRV in EX spec . It will have everything you crave and more , plus Honda reliability

Possibly suggesting the touring version wasn't helpful.

Alan is looking for a replacement for his Evoque, and very specifically not an estate car like touring versions.

FWIW I hadn't seen X-drive on anything but the X series SUV types, hence my earlier comment.

Can't see much difference between a Mazda cx30 except the G31 is bigger and has more storage in the back. I did say I was just trying to think outside the box.
The xdrive (4wheel drive) is an option on saloons, coupes, touring and suvs

Why not another Evoque, honestly I have one and that's all I would swap it for, the only thing I have coughed up for is the timing belt which isn't as eyewatering as some may suggest, apart from that just wear n tear items but no nasty stuff, its probably the best car I have owned and if I was in the market for something the same size, its a no brainer, Evoque all day long.

You may well have a good point but there are a few things going through my mind...

I've been a car nut all my life and although I've mostly had small two seat open cars I've had a few different things including a v8 saloon and now an SUV just for the experience and I just thought something similar to the Evoque but a bit different might be nice. The local JLR dealer seems to be very good (despite being not so good in the past) but they seem to be constantly booked up three or 4 weeks in advance and although I've been lucky with reliability and I have other cars not being able to get a booking within 3 or 4 weeks is a bit annoying so a good but less stretched dealership would be nice. I've tried a couple of independent specialists but to be honest for one reason or another they were woeful and although my local garage is great for general things and I have taken all my current cars there they wouldn't have a clue with anything requiring JLR specific diagnostics.

We've got used to the Evoque, we picnic in the back and plan to do more camping in it but I just fancied something slightly different which will still fulfill the role. Looking at the Evoque sized cars suggested so far on Autotrader the biggest issue for me seems to be the interiors as I just don't like cars that make me feel like I'm sat in a cramped cluttered dark cave surrounded by black things but granted some Evoques are like that too. Thinking about the Evoque the only thing I'd change about it is to make the back seats fold flat like the Discovery sport. I don't know why this isn't done or maybe isn't possible.

If a nice auto Mazda / Lexus / something else pops up with a panoramic roof and a nice light interior I might be interested but I do want to at least rule a petrol Evoque out too and perhaps that's where I should start :D

Mine fold flat when all my camping gear is squashing them ;) but yes I do understand that bit

O.k let’s apply some of those specs to a Honda CRV .EX Full length sunroof. Yep , spacious and roomy yep , choice of engines and gearbox yep . Auto tailgate yep , self levelling lights yep , electric drivers seat yep fold flat rear seats don’t even have to touch them just pull a lever .yep , economical 50mpg 2.2 diesel 60mpg + 1.6 diesel yep , timing belt problems nope timing chain fitted ,yep 4x4 or 2wd as required . .4 WD only kicks in when needed . Plus all the usual bells and whistles sat nav, auto everything else .. and legendary reliability

I've entered a list of cars into the size comparison application and I now have a list of saved searches in Autotrader.

My Evoque is going in for a service and MoT on Monday and when it comes back I'll have to have a serious think.

Thank you all who've suggested cars. Some have been too big bit I have now got a list off possibilities.

One things has surprised me, I thought Evoques being Land Rover products would be on the expensive side of things but looking at the competition I think some cars which I'd have thought would be cheaper are actually around or even more than Evoque prices.
