Replacement New Zealand Flag, which would you choose?

#3 looks like a penis , but any of the others are fine - i'd say keep the original though theres more pressing things to spend money on

If I had to pick one, it'd be the last one, but I agree it seems a colossal waste if money for something which may not even result in the winner being adopted for use.

I'm sure Freud would have something to say about that ;)

Even though the fern ones look nice as a design, that fern is a bit too complex for a flag. Which should be clear even when shown very small. The Mauri spiral is as complex as it should get.

Incidentally I think it would be good if the flag showed strong Mauri connections. Spiral or otherwise.

Anyway it's a great thing for New Zealand to have a independent flag of their nation. They should not rush the process and they can spend as much as the people want to, on choosing, as long as they are not wasteful of course. Happy times.

The spiral one is a fern leaf uncurling so they are all ferns. It's Hobson's Choice for the Kiwis. Oh, and why no flag with a kiwi?

I don't really mind any of the designs. But I'm baffled how it cost NZ$26M. Have they not heard of Fiverr?

I quite like the second one shown, it's attractive and keeps enough elements of the original to still be recognisable as NZ by most people.

An opinion based purely on aesthetics and recognisability is probably not the most valid one when it comes to this though.
I have no idea what the political situation is in NZ, what the strength of public feeling is around changing the flag nor any clue as to what the cultural significance of the silver fern is . . . just as well I'm not voting really, because I'm seriously underqualified to offer an opinion on which is the most appropriate or even whether I think they should change the flag at all

 You must REALLY hate this one then!

#3 looks like a penis ,

What kind of weird penises (penii???) have you been looking at Pete?
I really worry about you sometimes

I don't hate any flags. But a country flag has a job to do. And it will be put to work in all sorts of ways. From web site icons to cloth flags flapping in the wind and painted on aeroplanes and be part of a variety of logos. Once one is chosen, they are stuck with it for a while. It will be mimicked, mocked and parodied. Care is needed.

Seriously! ....too many jokes! !!

If I had a vote I would vote to keep the current one, it has a huge amount of history behind it, if it was only out of those 4 it would be number 4.

Yes. The history is important. But that sort of decision really can only be made by the New Zealanders.

On a much more international forum I'm a member of it seems the majority of the NZers will vote to keep the current flag and see it as a colossal waste of money and that the PM wants to do it as his legacy (read as ego trip)

Number 2 looked like the only one not designed by a metal fan. \m/

I thought @big soft moose had stopped sending those sort of pictures after that unfortunate incident with the police? ;)

also i couldnt find a wide enough angle lens and my panoramic stitching software doesn't work on this laptop

 I just knew someone was going to say that

the trouble wih using the macro is that at 1:1 i'd have to stich 8 frames together :p

this discussion reminds me of red dwarf (the one where kryten gets made human)

Kryten " Is this normal"
Lister "Taking pictures of it and showing it to your mates ? no its smegging not"

No 3 reminds me of that black and white IS vermin.

Simply because it's black and white?
There's no other resemblance

Yes, that's near enough an explanation, Ruth. Does not look like much thought went into the designs so not much point into puting much thought into picking a favourite.

Flags do my head in. Nightmare at quizzes. I favour all nations having a solid colour flag with the name of the country written on it in Comic Sans.

Completely agree.
Proper colours too....none of this "Cerulian", "Morning Mist" or "Meditative Sandalwood" nonsense.
Blue, Green, Red etc.....all acceptable.

Ah but does that name have to be in English or the national language?

How about both, plus an outline of the country's shape?

Now you're just adding layers onto the pub quiz! I barely know the shape of this country! At a push I could do you Chile and Italy.

Why do we NEED flags again?
I doubt there'll be too many Cavalry charges in the near future
