would it be unethical to do a shoot in an old unused cemetary ? just wondered what you all think.

Presumably disused rather than unused? Is it attached to a church or is it a municipal one?

Cemeteries are really interesting photographic subjects I think, but whether it is appropriate might depend on the style of shoot.

It must belong to somebody, you may require permission.

Depends what you want to do I suppose. Shooting it as a landscape or for detail would be ok - but posing a nude on a headstone might upset some people!

Wrong - yes. But I can guarentee that there's people out there who would subscribe to sites for that sort of thing!

There was me, thinking my lens fetish was strange

I caught a couple of Goths taking 'sexy' pictures in graveyard next tp a Church up the road, in just a black bra and mini skirt, stripy tights etc. You know the look. I just chuckled and kept walking the dog! I wouldn't think you'd be doing any harm!

I bet there are people dying to get in there!

I do this sort of stuff regulary and have never had a moments bother!

Great atmospherics.

i shoot go graveyards and cemeteries quite a bit. Never had any problems and see no problem with it. As long as you are respectful of any mourners that are around. But as you say it is disused so this should not be a problem.
Cemeteries hold such a variety of subjects to shoot, they are one of my favorite photographic subjects.

Any photos??? :lol::lol::lol:

I've shot in several graveyards/cemetaries. If nobody is around then I just shoot away but if anyone is around including people paying their respects I will ask them if they mind just out of respect.

I've done a couple of shoots and one time I didn't notice that there was a couple there, when I spotted them I immediately stopped and asked them if they minded, they said they didn't but thanks for asking and they just stood there watching.

If you wake the residents, RUN

to be honest if i was dead and gone i reckon i'd be chuffed to have some semi naked bird cavorting around on my headstone.

he must have looked a right pillock.

excellent, thats the venue for tomorrow then :D

thanks all

i discussed this with my grandad tonight...he's 93 and a morbid sod..always making plans for his funeral..he used to take some pics back in the day too. You should have seen the twinkle in his eye.

Some church yards have historical interest, take one local, Eyam in Derbyshire,
(Bubonic plague 1665) this claimed the life of many of the locals, this is visited by thousands from all over taking photos of headstones of the victims.

I expect very soon afterwards they were burying a stiff'un!! :D

That's rude Janice - bad bad girl! :)

thought exactly the same thing....

when this said RELIGIOUS QUESTION...
I thought...oh no...not another Nikon vs Canon thread!! :p:bat:

I think stealing people's souls with a camera is way more unethical but we still do it don't we? :)

Certainly not as unethical as shooting the mountains of corpses in the concentration camps.

maybe "religious" was the wrong wording, i just think cemetaries and all the praying and what not that goes on in churches and at funerals makes them a religious playground and a lot of people might object to a photographer and a gothic model wandering round, seems i thought wrong :D

How dare that document the aftermath of the atrocities committed and not consider the feelings of pathetic, spineless individuals 65 years later. :cuckoo:

People might well object.

But that is not the same as it being unethical.

In Portugal you have to ask for permission to do it.
I see nothing wrong about that, but it's the law...

I'd say do what you like with respect ... what the living don't know isn't going to upset them.

If your going to use the shots for advertising I think it would be thoughtful not to include grave names in your shots and that kinda stuff too.
