Before I click to buy the carbon version of the redsnapper tripod I am hoping any owners of this or the metal one can tell me the good and bad points of ownership.
I have a cheapo manfrotto which just can't take the weight of my 40d+grip+flash and shakes like a sh***ing dog even in a slight breeze never mind any real wind.
I want a sturdy yet light pod but can't afford the hundreds for Gitzo etc.

hi there i own a redsnapper tri-283 tripod and ball head and its as solid as a rock, it holds my canon 400d with grip and a sigma 150-500mm no probs at all, and you get a 10% discount being a tp member toooooooooo;), you also get a nice padded carry bag very comfy aswell, all in all its the best piece of equipment ive ever brought, and joe the chap at redsnapper is top class:clap:, so in my opinion go for it:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

I own a red snapper tripod and bag, great value and nice sturdy pieces of kit. Although one of the legs on my tripod has become loose, just need to tighten it now and again, but to be fair it does take alot of abuse.

Definately recommend thier stuff and great to deal with.

Ive got the red snapper tripod with the 3way head, takes a 40d + grip + flash + a 300/2.8 + 2x with no issues what so ever (loaded up it to see how coped lol), definately a beefy bit of kit and Joes service is excellent.

Down side, its quite heavy (in comparison to some ultralight things that cost 3-5x more!), though i carried mine for 2hrs up a mountain yesterday with out issue. The excellent bag more or less makes the weight un-noticeable. Only other slight downside is it doesnt quiet fit into the bag with the 3way head attached but i can live with a handle poking out :D

I have the metal legs and the three way head and have used it both with my 600mm telescope with a 2x teleconverter and a 1300mm telescope, although it's a shorter tube, but thanks to mirrors has a longer lightpath, for excellent results on the moon. Combined kit weight of something like 2.5kg in each case. The shorter tube 1300mm telescope was a little more stable, but that's probably down to being easier to hit the centre of gravity of the gear.

For the price I'm really impressed with mine apart from it not fitting in the bag with head on like thompo mentions. I've taken 4 min exposures on very windy days and it was still solid.

Another thing is that the quick release plate isn't that quick!! You have to screw it in every time

Actually it can be a little fiddly in the dark, but as said, it's not that slow a quick release to be fair... compared to winding a screw up into the camera body if it wasn't there.

I found the quick release on the redsnapper more fiddly than slow - but if that is a concern then use a different head - the legs are really good.
For me the only downsides were weight and leg locking mech (Not one to put the tripod up quick!)

I had Joe's aluminium TRI-283 initially for a couple of month with the TB-12 ballhead. An excellent and sturdy kit - used it during snowfall in January and it coped fantastically well. I don't think I have seen anything that can rival it for the price.

Last month decided to take a plunge and upgraded to Joe's carbon version TRI-283C - a brilliant kit. I tested it and it seems better/quicker at dumpening vibrations (like knocking the tripod leg accidentally etc) and it is noticably lighter.

What I would prise Joe for is a service - had a minor issue with my ballhead and had a lot of help from Joe to sort it out.

Now also have two Redsnapper backpacks - could not find what I was looking for amongst Lowerpro and the likes. Really happy with both of them.

I'm using the 283 with the tilthead. Very nice and sturdy, well made, etc.

 put plate in place & turn the lock screw. Pretty QR to me :)

I know what you're saying but in comparison to my old cheap tripod and my friends Manfrotto its slow. Not much of an issue though as the rest of it is excellent!!

I love my Redsnapper tripod :D Tripod is really well made and the leg locking is quick enough.

The head hasnt been any issue to me but then my previous tripod was a screw in one.

The added benefit of a bag and a smaller centre post are welcome.

The bag is really well made as well with the strap cushioned and elasticated.

Top tripod :D

The bag is a serious bit of kit alone, you could garry it all day without issue.

Unlike Andy I opted for the 3 way head, again, solid as a rock and if I was going to be picky (which you asked for) I'd say the only negative of this combo is that with the head attached, you need to remove one handle from the head or have it poking out of the top. But this does not worry me at all.

What ball head have you got for it? I assume the head for allow you to pan ok without having to grab a handle to get the tripod to move!

well impressed with mine tripod with ball head mine fits into the well made bag with the ball head attached great bit of kit:clap::clap::clap:

Got the legs, but using a manfrotto 3 way head on mine, did not get on with the quick release plate on the supplied one, excellent piece of kit and mine takes some abuse.

Seriously considering buying one of these, my current one is a bloody video tripod, never let women surprise you with photography presents!

Hi

I've got one and it's brill, very solid. I haven't carried it over any great distance yet as I mainly use it for macro work and shots of the moon.

Good Bits..... Everything.

Bad Bits...... Makes Manfrotto owners a bit baity when you tell them how much you paid for it!

Got a 283 with manfrotto 804 head, cant fault it. Very precisely made, sturdy, and a pleasure to use. Also get spikes as well as rubber feet which are extra on the frotto

Easiliy the equal of the Manfrotto at a much better price, coupled with excellent service from Joe.

Only dowside is the bag whilst excellent quality could do with being bigger.

Recommended without reservation.
