Recommend me a vinyl ( VINYL SHOOT CONCLUSION)

I just contacted Tony Beal as ive heard quite a few mention them, they sell in 2.5m Widths, its £10 per meter and thats not including VAT, they also charge £5 to roll it onto a cardboard tube, then its about £20 delivery so looks like they have cottoned on and prices have risen a lot from last year, not looking quite so much the bargain any more

I found the exact same thing about three months ago.

More expensive than Bessel now, plus they do them in 2.9 mtrs width and come on an alu tube for super-clamp compatibility.

Can you get vinyl in narrower widths (2 metres) ?

Yes. I have seen 2m widths of vinyl on eBay. Bessel and XL Studio Lighting do them.

Yes I bought a 2x6mtr roll of grey to try from Bessel as I've only got a small space - one problem is the core is quite small in internal diameter so won't fit my Expan system (well OK it does now as I've modified the bobbins) the other issue is the way it is rolled onto the core - face side out - which I feel is the wrong way (not an issue with paper, which I've never found to have a face side). Did email Bessel and they said they were looking at using larger cores and to contact them before ordering and they'll roll the vinyl on to the core the other way. As for the product itself, nice weight, hangs well on the core, perhaps a bit too shiny for some direct lit shots but not bad. Me if I could get 2mtr wide rolls of paper (rather than order 2.7's and have to cut them down) that would be my personal preference. But as the "only game in town" I'm happy with the Bessel and will be going back for a white at some stage - unless someone can point me toward 2mtr rolls of paper?

Ah, I wasn't aware that you couldn't get paper in 2m widths. I'm still working out how wide I can feasibly go in the space I have to work with, so its good to know that vinyl is available in smaller widths.

I just put up my wall mounts and use a 2.72m roll of lastolite paper, where is the best place to get at least 2.5m wide rolls of vinyl?

So, would a good Vinyl out class paper?
It may depend a little on what you're using it for. Paper is good to roll out for a client that needs it when you'll likely want something else for the next coustomer. If you nearly always want white background and floor, I'd go for a quality vinyl.

So the question then is where can one buy a good quality vinyl?
Bessel sell cheap vinyl that will do for many (lots here are happy with it), but I don't think it's good enough quality. It's bright white (fine by me) but too thin. When it hangs down from your background support it doesn't fall evenly, so you get varying degrees of exposure across the background (unless you're blowing it). And it does crease if you're not careful with it. But it is good value, and works in some situations.

LuxS studio decor vinyl is twice as thick, and twice the price. Worth it if it's your job. It holds it shape better than the cheap stuff and doesn't crease. Call them and ask for a sample. I've not seen Tony Beal's, they sound like another good value vinyl, I might ask for a sample.

Long time lurked first time poster. It's a shame that my first post isn't more positive, but I really feel the need!

Spent a long time weighing up the options of vinyl vs paper vs Tony beal. Thought I'd done my homework. Since there is a lot of places mentioning this new 2in1 vinyl I thought I'd save a bit of money and get a vinyl that I could use for high key and low key work. The website says matte, glare free etc all sounded good, so took the plunge last week.

I wish I'd asked for a sample first!! The white side is sort of shiny and has a dimpled texture to it, which is fine if you OE but otherwise you get a sort of grey effect. I suppose where the black is showing through from the other side. Which brings me to the black side... Now I'm no expert in marketing law or the law on the accuacy of product descriptions but the black side IS NOT glare free or matte by any stretch of the imagination. I've tried all sorts of techniques, but all I get are spots of light from the shiny surface. Not impressed, especially since my wife ordered this for me as a gift.

So, if there is anything to say in conclusion... Where can I get some black paper from?

Try Creativity Backgrounds. Various widths, colours etc. And if you buy three, you can choose a fourth free. They also supply vinyl too, which is also available in 2.7m lengths to match most expan setups.

I'm sorry to hear of your experience, although I'm not really surprised by it.

Vinyl has become a bit of a fad and, as always, sellers have jumped on the bandwagon and offered vinyl for photography that is neither designed for the purpose nor fit for purpose - material design for lorry taups, or signwriting or whatever, sometimes far too thin, sometimes too shiny and sometimes with a textured finish.

Black paper? Not really ideal either, as it can be quite reflective. The perfect black background material is of course genuine black velvet, brushed so that the nap is constant, but that's expensive. I feel that black muslin is a good, economical alternative.

Must say I agree, over the years I've only used paper or cloth, but in my much smaller studio space I only had room for 2 meter rolls (mind you that's only because I have a large set of speakers in each corner of the room) so rather than buy 2.7's and cut the 0.7 off, I tried vinyl (grey from Bessel). It's OK, but has IMO significant negatives - weight, smell, ripples, too reflective, all of which wouldn't be a problem with paper. But on a positive note it does have price & longevity on its side and none of those problems precludes its use, just paper is easier to use.

Another here for Tony Beal.... 3 infect. Also have Bessel which is ok but not as good quality.
