Can anyone out there recommend me a decent coffee machine that doesn't cost a fortune?

I'm thinking about something like this

I don't think I want a pod based machine but if someone can give a compelling reason for getting one then I'd consider those as well.

A lot quicker
A lot easier
A lot less mess

The three main reasons that spring to mind

Just checked the spec of the machine that I linked and it can use pods as well as ground coffee. Best of both worlds?

I am in my wife's good books as I got her a tassimo for her 40th. Its better than the coffee in restaurants and she is spending less in costa. It also makes great hot chocolate for me and the kids.

Best of both worlds?

Possibly, although I'd hazard a guess it will take the 'teabag' style pods.

I've got a Nespresso unit now with the aeroccino and, having been through bean to cup, espresso, and full steam wand units, won't be changing again.

Yes, if you are a barista, the coffee will taste different but, for the mere mortals among us, it's bl**dy good coffee.

It also means there are plenty of coffee types available to choose from as well, even on a day to day basis, if you have a few different pods in the cupboard so you can make yourself a coffee that fits your mood/preference.

I've had a few coffee machines from the basic filter coffee maker to a Gaggia bean to cup machine but I now just have a cafetiere. Lovely coffee, couldn't be simpler to use, relatively cheap and best of all, easy to clean (empty grounds then place the cafetiere in the dishwasher). Is it just for coffee or do you want the full cappuccino/latte experience?

Yes, I'm wanting the full latte/cappuccino experience.

My Mum wouldn't mind a coffee machine but I don't think she'd go for a pod type system but she wouldn't want a big machine that could do say 12 cups!

Off topic slightly...

Save your coffee grounds and put them around garden pots and plants as slugs and snails hate them and will b****r off elsewhere to find their food for the night.

I bought a Bosch Tassimo last week http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00272MVB0 .

I wanted the convenience of instant but with some reasonable quality taste and it seems to fit the bill so far. It is pod based but there are a reasonable range of coffees, lattes, cappuccinos as well as hot chocolates and teas.

Various bits go straight in the dishwasher, it lights up (surprisngly useful) and the family love it. Could just do with a horlicks pod now (it's an age thing) :)

I've had a couple of Nespresso units, work very well and the coffee is as satisfying as I want it to be. Pods make life easier.

serious coffee addict here and have pretty much had them all.. the main 3 I use is a Gaggia Classic, Dolce Piccolo and a good old Bialetti Moka..

the Gaggia is the king for me but its best to keep it fired up and you have to clean the puck etc etc... but when you master the art of the 13 second shot your'e in heaven.

Dolce is the dark horse, I have had senseo, uno uno, nespresso and tassimo but the dolce wins, works out at 24p a cup or double that if its a milk based drink, best capsules are the espresso barista's, best pod based shot I have ever tasted, also produces the best hot chocolate.

Bialetti moka is for when I want volume, get a nice grind and you're good to go.

I have two pod machines, a Dolce Gusto and a Senseo, the DG is easy and clean to use and has a limited range of great coffee, the pods are expensive though (~ £3.70 for 16) compared to others. The Senseo takes what look like coffee in tea bags, a vast range available and an optional adaptor that lets you use your own ground coffee. It's messier to use and I find I have to use fresh water each time or the plastic tank gives a chemical taste to your coffee.

I've actually just bought a DG machine for work, tesco were selling the picollo version for £50 and with doubled up vouchers I got it pretty cheaply.

Favourite coffee atmo is either Lungo or Grande Creme for the DG, any Columbian for the Senseo.

Buy a coffer percolator , one that sits on the hob, £25, there's nothing as good

i have a Delonghi...excellent

but soon learnt frothing milk with steam is a PITA

1inch of milk in a cafetiere - you have to find an all plastic one - no metal clamps or bands
2 mins in microwave, or till it foams
plunger madly will produce superb foam, to top off the coffee, with a pinch of cocoa

a morning ritual.....:D

ps if you have a Sainsburys - buy ''Madeleines'' a sort of sponge biscuit - very French..!

as the 'maid'...Qi Shu ............. baked in the film "The Transporter"

I've just bought a gaggia cubika plus from curry's for £80. Really pleased with it actually. Makes really nice espresso with proper creme. Also has a steamer rod thingy for lattes and the like. Has a big water tank and a heated top, to warm your cups.

Only bad points are the clearance between the spouts and the bottom, only tiny espresso cups fit, same with the steamer.

would love a coffee machine, some awesome machines and good looking gadgets out there

I'd go for a decent machine like the Rancilio Silvia and a decent Burr Grinder... maybe something like this - iirc it's about the only domestic machine that Rancilio make - rest of their product line need hard wiring to the mains and plumbing into the water supply, but they're fantastic machines.

We've a Nespresso maker and really like it. I was very unsure what to go for and it took a friend who had one to convince me, don't regret it and def recommend one.

get a nespresso machine. i recommend one to a user on another forum and he loves it :D

Looks nice, how difficult is it to clean the milk compartment though? Does it waste a lot of milk?

My espresso machine has only a steam funnel, which can be a pain to clean.

The nespresso pods look to be ~80p per cup?

Don't know about that one, but I use THIS machine which has the separate Aeroccino unit (the cylinder to the right) which froths the milk.

It's teflon coated on the inside and a quick rinse out immediately after use and it's good to go. Will make latte or cappuccino milk (great hot chocolate too!), and can warm or not warm, so you can use it for milkshakes as well if that floats your boat.

As for cost, the pods vary in price depending on your choice, but the most expensive is (from memory) only about 30p a cup.

Another vote for the nespresso. Far easier than the other options for a coffee fix (and I've tried most of them). Got a lovely looking dualit machine, cost a fortune, never use it! The service for the pods for Nespresso is great, almost always next day delivery when ordered over the web. Their milk frother is my secret present to people who are hard to buy for, works brilliantly!

read post #23 for quick foam

Nespresso - great for espressos, but thats about it. Cup size is limited.

Tassimo - a tiny bit behind Nespresso for pure coffee, but they have licensed the pods, so you can get suchards hot chocolate, milka hot chocolate, Cadbury hot chocolate kenco, Star Bucks, Cote Dor, Carte Noir coffee and lots more. You can also stick a mug under the nozzle, not a small espresso cup.

I ordered this when I ordered our Tassimo...

Works out at 20p per cup

Odd, I spent 4 hours reading reviews for nespresso and tassimo and there were lots of complains about using a small cup in the machine to pour into a mug and it only did espresso style coffee.

The joy of online reviews - they can be written by idiots :(

Ignore my previous info then :)
