I'm planning on passing on my cheap acoustic to my niece as it's very easy to play and buying something a little better. I have between 200-250 and I'm happy to look at used. My style is quite folky so I use a lot of picking, but I also like to belt it out at times.

I'm looking for a deeper tone than my current 3/4 body.

Recording King acoustics are superb for the money, I would consider those, have played a few and they are high on my list of next acoustic.. Lag have some good models aswell, again very high value for money.

need to get out to a shop and play some.

Has to be Yamaha ;) the FG750S Acoustic Guitar is a nice one maybe slightly over budget but a nice guitar for the price...

My first acoustic was an Ovation Applause.
Served me very well.

Already been said - get to a shop and try a few. Even more than camera kit (where a DxxxD will be an DxxxD wherever it comes from), different makes models and examples will have different feels and sounds.

A good guitar shop will be able to advise and point you in the right general direction but after that, the choice is a very personal one. A good shop will also have someone who can set the thing up for you, whether it's raising/lowering the nut/bridge, adjusting the truss rod to raise/lower the action - worth paying for the expertise, just like it is for photo kit!

Have to agree with Nod, although I took a gamble on mine because it has a nice thinner body than most acoustics, but buying previous basses the best thing to do is definately go to a shop and get a hold of a few. You just know when you find the right one.

Thanks guys. Yes, I appreciate playing them is very important but I do like to get some opinions too to help narrow it down. I have a guitar shop pretty close so I'll pop in.

I see you're in Northampton, there is a shop (I can't remember the name) at the back of where TK Maxx is thats pretty decent, they have a fair few in there.

Cheers, I didn't know that. I've been using the one on the Kettering Rd for strings and plecs but I'll check that one out too.

I've had many many guitars over the years, but the very best "bang for buck" acoustic was without doubt a Sigma (by Martin). It was cheap as chips but had a terrific tone. Our band's guitarist used to prefer it to his Takamine in the studio.

Those RK guitars look amazing value.

My friend went in there and seen one he liked, played it then ummed and ahh'd for about 15 mins. I said to him you'll regret not buying it. He bought it haha.

I'm such a crap friend!

Let's hope my wife is as pushy. :D

I'm edging towards a used Taylor or Guild now. ;)

Personally I have a 1979 Epiphone which was originally set up by Ray Cooper (Claptons percussionist). That is until my Dad passed it on to me and I had to have it switched to a lefty :)

Don't suppose your a lefty? I'm considering getting rid of a couple of my electric guitars........

I am a lefty, Nick, but I play righty. Shame!

edit: When I say play I really mean make a god awful racket. ;)

Buy second hand and buy a solid top.

If you find a ten year old solid top that still sounds the business, it'll more than likely sound the business in another ten years. And another ten years. And another ten.....

Look out for any cracks in the lacquer, and look for binding coming away from the body etc. Have a good look at the frets to see if there's any heavy wear.

Don't waste your money on an acoustic-electric (EQ boards can be very seductive) unless you know for definite that you'll be using it plugged in to an amp.....you can always add a pick-up later, or just mic it up if you want to record.

Try as many guitars, in as many guitar shops as you can find. Never buy there and then. Always go away and think about it.

Solid advice that. I am defo buying second hand (It's the wheeler dealer in me) and looking at a Taylor Big Baby, but I'm keeping my options open.

I did try a couple of Taylors when I was choosing, but they all sounded a bit too "bright" for me, I wanted something more bluesy, hence the Martin.
Didn't care much for the baby Taylor at all. Wasn't up to their usual high build standard, IMHO.

Beggars can't be choosers. :)

I suppose my tanglewood would sour these pages then?

Just as closure on this I thought I'd share the guitar I bought. I decided to go for an older nicely worn in guitar with some pedigree but still a great price.

Here you go...

I can't wait to try it. :D

I'll take some video when it's here so you can hear the tone... if you'll excuse my awful playing. ;)

Good choice ; I picked one of these for my mate several years ago when he was starting out and it's still lovely . I like my Lowden tho' :)

Well, I've got the Norman now and the tone is very nice, but it's not got the depth I was looking for so I'm thinking I'll be looking for a solid mahogany instead. Maybe a Guild.
