Yes
Well the 42" Plasma went click during Attenborough and the picture just disappeared.Sound and channel changing --no problem.Just no damn picture.Tried everything and I do mean everything.Checked the receipt and its 4 months out of warranty----of course. So I rang the local warranty agent to see if they would handle the repair for me and they wanted £175 just to look at it and yes I would have to get it to them--no collection service.:gag:
After much ringing around it seems that this sort of figure whilst at the high end is not unusual for plasma/LCD tellys.Eventually I found a long established local company that only wanted £55 up front but as I found out when I dropped the set off they contract out the engineering---huh ! I now have to wait 10-14 days to find out if its an economic repair.
All my previous tellys have lasted 7-10 years and been passed down through various children and so I have never subscribed to extended warranty agreements.I would now strongly urge anyone with a big plasma LCD to take one out----with the average new set costing C £800 and rising up to £2000ish its got to make sense if its going to go phut in less than 18 months.Me I am keeping my fingers crossed ---more in hope than expectation-----AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH.
Pete.

My big old beast is 9 years old and I'm reluctant to change it as I'm worried that the above would happen to me

I really hope you get it sorted (cheaply)

What TV was it? My LG started doing that, reset it itself aftering off.

I get 2year warrentee's on goods like that, due to insurance on m bank account.

Although saying that on my last 2 TV's i have manage to get the extended warrentee for free. Had to use the Currys thing twice, they sorted both claims without a hitch and within a week.

Check with Citizens Advice, I think that the "12 months" warranty doesn't really count. I don't know the details but it's something to do with the customer having a reasonable expectation of life-time vs cost of item.

Spot on. Check your statutory rights (as suggested CAB will help you out) and you might find you're in luck.

Agreed. Some nice part of the the sale of good act (I think, might be trade description act) states that a product sold is expected to last a resonable amount of time.

Now from experience with this your contract is with the store of purchase and not the manufacturer so any claim has to go back through that store. I used to work in a repair department for DSG and after a token fight they would usually give in and authorise fuill repair.

this is very common and this is why there is lcd tv's now the plasma's are only expected to survive for 2 years and some case 3 there is fault with the gas or something daft like that this is why you hardly see them now too many problems

as i got told by a tv engineer when i bought my lcd

also check you house insurance policy

might be covered if not accidentle damage may be a option
