Radio 1 breakfast show Nick Grimshaw

Everyone here seems to be going on about the music played on the radio. For me, yes, the music is important, but equally the content and mixture of chat, news and debate is also important. Including interviews with artists/actors/politicians/comics etc and not forgetting joe public, plus on Steve Wright you get Barry from Watford and Ask Elvis...

used to be the best thing on radio :) what went wrong?

Nothing. He got better as he got older. Couldn;t stand him on Radio 1 back in the day. Wanted to slap him too back then. ;)

i agree those things are important - with the exception of news its important that there isnt any

why anyone wants to listen to djs drivelling on about their holidays, boring children or whatever , or 'hillarious' gags like spitting water over each other over some lame double entendre (and yes i know that's scott mills) is beyond me

equally why do we want to know that joe from essex thinks we should send them all back where they came from (jeremy vine), or here some washed up Z lister drivelling about their new film comeback

just shut up and play some damn music - thats the purposes of a disc jockey , the show is suposed to be about the music not about them

You use the term Disc Jockey... I like music played on the radio, sure, but I also like a mix of chat, interviews, guests etc too. I use the term Broadcasters.

As for Jeremy Vine, it's a bit like some of the debates in the OOF forums, some will be interesting and others won't. One thing I don't want from my radio is an all-day discotheque.

So, I suppose I disagree that radio shows are all about the music, it's a mixture of stuff, I like. But if you want to listen to non-stop music, then fine, find a station that does that or stick on a CD. ;)

I wasn't aware who Nick Grimshaw was, then I saw him on TV this morning and realised he was the idiot off Channel 4. My sons and I all hate him with a passion, just the sight of him and his stupid hair, it's enough to incite violence.

I've just had a look at the radio 2 play list for week starting 29 Sep

Muse
Ren Harvieu
Josh Osho
Rebecca Ferguson
Amy McDonald
Train
Nickleback
Pet Shop Boys
Pnau

Not a total list of pre 1980 singers, some weren't even born till after 1990 :)

Personally for me I'd like to hear the country music station back on DAB.
As for DJs, outside the BBC stations most are just presenters looking for the step to TV and have little to no interest in music at all.

not unlike jo whiley and fearne cotton then - its generally true of all DJs that they are either too past it or too ugly for TV , or they are using radio as a stepping stone to futher a televisual career

Hmmm. Let's have a look at Radio 2 current presenters with regular shows

Aled Jones
Elaine Paige
Claire Teal
Paul Jones
Jools Holland
Jamie Cullum
Mike Harding
Brian Jonhson
Huey Morgan

I think those can fairly say they have a little music background and know the subject they are broadcasting about.

And Steve Wright, Chris Evans, Ken Bruce, Jeremy Vine ? - The closest Chris Evans came to musical knowledge was boinking Billy Piper.

Also of those you mention Elaine paige, Brian Johnson, Huey Morgan and Aled Jones (assuming you arent talking about the irritating little tit who used to be on chris moyles breakfast) used to be musicians, and have already had other careers Clare Teal, Paul Jones, Jamie Cullum, Mike Harding, still are musicians, and Jools Holland also has a TV show.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the idea that BBC DJs are fully commited to radio as a career

Brian Johnson is still a Musician, unless he's left AC/DC and I haven't heard about it.

fair enough - i'd kind of assumed AC/DC werent still doing there thing, due to old age - imo its a bit sad when rock bands don't realise that they arent young any more " I'm back, back in traction"

Oh I don't know, some of us still enjoy going to see bands we grew up with

I went the see Genesis in 2007 at Old Trafford , it was a sell out gig so I'm not alone , while they can sing in tune and still play the instruments, ROCK ON

Paul McCartney murdering Hey Jude at the Olympic opening ceremony is where the line is drawn, he's the wrong side of it.

It made me violent when chris moyles was on the radio, such a big headed tit if ever there was one. He loves the sound of his own voice, he cant just shut up for the length of a song, he has to mock it in some way before it finishes. I think theres more to his leaving than the bbc wanting to attract a younger audience with bringing in nick grimshaw. If the news/weather was being read he had to chirp in, but Im convinced if someone kept talking over him he would have seen his arse. A show with someone called comedy dave says it all to me, maybe it was ironic like little john being a giant of a man in robin hood.

What really pushed me over the edge with moyles was when i was watching the million pound drop live, and he contacted them to say he was watching. Again so friggin big headed that he wanted to see if they would mention him out on the show, good riddance to the waster, over paid tit.

Nick grimshaw is no better, a few years ago he was kicking the arse out of being gay on tv, he was so camp it was unreal, he seems to have toned that down now, maybe realising that being gay isnt such a big deal and you dont need to make an issue of it. Either way hes no good. I think radio 1 is for people with a lack of imagination as when they do a news report from say a supermarket they have to have sound effects, maybe because the average radio 1 listener needs sounds of beeping checkouts to picture where the report is coming from. Wish I had a DAB radio, otherwise I just listen to my cds. Chris evans is very entertaining and at least he talks sense and knows what hes talking about.

Claire Teal still tours as does Jools Holland, Elaine Paige had to have a few months off yearly this year as she was staring on Broadway, so not has beens looking for new jobs.

The point really was that they have an real interest in the music they play, and not just will this get me on TV. if you listen to some stations they have no interest or control in the music, in fact most comes from a central hub, they are just there to fill the odd gap with some local info so it feels like your station

At least R2 play a variety of styles, most stations just play easy pop, nothing to offend anyone just mindless pap that nobody likes, but nobody will moan about.

Theres plenty still playing and not showing their age. What does it matter how old they are now if they're still capable. Rush - all 3 of them in their late 50's and still producing great albums and performing brilliant concerts, just as they were 30 years ago, UFO - Phil Mogg must be around 62 yet they still produce great albums and put on a great live set. Plus many many more. Just look at how Pink Floyd and The Who showed all the younger performers up a couple of years back.

Been listening to Radio 1 recently for the first time in years and loving it loads. Grimmy's slackjaw Oldham noise in the morning is quite amusing.
