R5 ii + 24-70 2.8 or r6 iii and 28-70 2.0

Hi guys, just wondering which you would choose, I managed to put off buying anything at the start of last year. But now I’ve saved up and have 2 options around the 6k mark (from Panamoz).

I think the r6iii is the better choice (with the 28-70 f2.0) as I can buy the glass I want and then upgrade the body in a few years as I did this last time when I got the 6D with the lenses and upgraded to the 5div.

But, I’ve seen reviews saying the 28-70 is overkill, which I can believe because it looks huge and I’ve had the EF 24-70 2.8 ii and never once thought “wouldn’t f2 be nice”. And then panamoz have a kit with the r5ii and 24-70 at £4230 at the minute with adaptor ring.

I like the idea of the 28-70 but also open to the idea of an r6iii with a 24-70 too.

I’ll be keeping my ef85 1.2 for now as I don’t have enough to swap all my lenses, I’ll be buying the rf 70-200 with either combo too as the AF looks much more improved along with either body.

It’s mainly family photos, karate competitions, school events. Not professional stuff.

Before you consider the 28-70, go and handle it. Before I bought my ‘forever std zoom’, I visited the Canon stand at the Photography Show and tried the:
24-70
24-105 f4 and (then newly released) f2.8
28-70

And the only ones I fancied carrying round all day were the f4 and the 24-70.
I’d throw a curve ball into the mix, take your £6k buy the R6iii, the 24-70 and the 135 or 70-200,

Thanks Phil, I know you answered me 18+ months ago and appreciate your time. I think I’m leaning towards the r6iii and 24-70, i don’t think I need any better than that after watching and reading a few reviews.

I was debating the same until I handled it and whilst with no doubt, it is a fantastic lens - it is cumbersome and heavy. Also, losing the 4mm from the wide end might not seem a lot, but it really is. I think the 45 1.2,has changed things a bit now - 24-70 2.8 and 45 1.2 is a great combo. To add another curveball, my “forever std zoom” is actually the 15-35 and I’ll prob get the 45 1.2 for when I need it extra special shallow DoF. I guess you can’t really go wrong with any of those L zooms, it’s all about what compromise you want to make and as much as the 28-70 sounds like the bag of primes we’ve all dreamed of, it’s just they bit too heavy to be enjoyable to use for long periods, imo.

I’ve ended up with the r5ii, rf24-70 2.8 IS, rf 70-200 2.8 IS, the r6iii was only £350 cheaper than then r5ii so was a no brainer, and I couldn’t see the 28-70 but I have seen the 24-70 and already looked huge haha. And an insta360 X5 whilst it was Black Friday to replace my aging theta 360 camera

Good choice, for the £350 I think I’d have done the same. The 24-70 is enough to carry, and the 70-200 is great.

Should do no problem.
I think there is a hotshoe adaptor but only necessary if you need to maintain the weather sealing for the new front intelligent connectors (whatever they’re called)

The speed lights said something about autofocus beam and not backwards compatible, I’ll try it anyway, I don’t remember the last time I used it so won’t be a great loss if it doesn’t work with the new camera, thanks again

The red autofocus assist beam we used with DSLR’s are not useful for mirrorless AF systems. The good news is that they weren’t that necessary with later DSLR’s either, as modern AF systems will focus in near pitch black.
