Looking to do a shoot for a couple with a VERY young baby soon, just wondered if a flash is going to be too much to use directly on the baby? At relatively low power

I wouldn't use a flash on camera close up - if that's what your asking. But then I wouldn't do that for any subject - if I could avoid it.

Ok, would you suggest just bump the metering up a couple of stops to correctly expose the pic then if shooting on aperture priority?

What's your gear? Is it a paid shoot? Do you have off camera lighting?

I would try to use window light - up the ISO and use aperture priority - but keep an eye on the shutter speeds too.
Let's hope it's not a paid shoot!

Luke the 50mm 1.8D that should be with you tomorrow :) and Natural light, ive gotten some fantastic shots of my kids and babies with this lens and natural light

It's not a paid shoot guys! I don't like to charge for something that I'm using as practice tbh!

No off camera lighting but I do have an off camera flash, like an SB600 but not as fancy

Looking at using a gripped D90 with a 50mm 1.8

Open to advice

Natural lighting might be the only option if flash is a no no

I would have thought that indirect flash would be OK ? But then i'm new to baby shooting (Mines due in July!)
I have an SB900 which has a built in bounce card - not sure if the 600 does?
but I have used that on endless ocassions when indoor lighting fails me :)

Indirect yes I guess, ideally a trigger would be nice, but i'd have to use the on cam flash to trigger the remote one thus not really gaining anything.

I do have a bounce card, so would you suggest aiming the flash right up? and relying on the bounce card to push the light forwards?

Interesting thought

1 - natural window light
2 - bounce flash to simulate natural window light
that could be bounced of a white wall or a ceiling - wall might be better
3 - natural window light

did I mention window light?

Haha thanks Andy :P Appreciate it, will hopefully put some pics from the set up if all goes well :)

another idea ive seen is ramp up the iso high (very high) then snap away in black and white - gives a very good look

Chances are the family aren't going to be moving anywhere quickly, so longer exposures with a tripod are very workable, too.

I would shoot in colour and convert later. Shooting in colour captures much more information than mono.

Whenever I take pictures of my nephews (3yrs to 6 months), I always use bounced flash off the ceilings and it looks great. I find direct flash rarely works in any case well unless you are a paparazzi taking some celeb candids!
