Question to 40d owners, odd effect in viewfinder

I've picked up my 40d yesterday and I have to say I'm delighted with it but I have one question.

Looking through the viewfinder I have the small spot metering circle in the center then the AF points surrounding that but between these and the periphery of the viewfinder I seem to have another quite indistinct but still visible circle, its not a thin black line like the spot metering circle more like a frosted area. I've removed the lens and looked through the viewfinder and its still there, so its not the lens nor does it appear to be on the mirror when I look into the body, its not in the sensor, I've checked it by locking up the mirror using manual sensor clean, however if I look into the mirror (not locked up) I can see up into the camera and the ring is there on the next stage where the squares showing the AF points are.

Is this normal or has there been an issue with the manufacture of some part of my camera? I can't take a photo of it but because its too far inside the camera.

Thanks in advance

If you can see it in the viewfinder it will never be on the sensor.

Could be some dust on the prism, when you take the lens off look "up" from the mirror to see if there is anything there

Nope the circle is like this

Sorry for the terrible picture, its almost like its made up of consecutive rings or scratches to give a frosted look, I can see through it but its not ideal.

I suspect its going to have to go back :(

OK, I've just taken a shot of completely consistent blue sky and he effect certainly isn't present on the shot so its not effecting photos in anyway which makes sense if its either on the focus screen or further into the view finder. Grrrrrr this is a brand new camera I don't want to start mucking about taking the focusing screen out before I've taken on decent photo but also I don't want to be sending it back :(

Gutted

Edit: Just tried live view and that's fine too, its definately in the viewfinder, I suppose this is obvious from the fact it remains in focus all the time, oh well this is helping me to understand how my camera works if nothing else :)

MB,

Whereabouts in the world are you? It may be worthwhile getting a second opinion from someone who has an equivalent Canon body.

I'm in Maidstone in Kent, I'll pop along to Jessops later and have a look through their 40d see if there is anything similar going on, if not it'll go back to the store who will then have to get another in. I stupidly bought it from Currys because I had a gift card but that means they won't have replacement stock and I'll have to wait.

I've just spoken to Currys they are going to order in a new body and call we when its ready to swap it out, I have to say I was expecting them to have to send it off to have it fixed so I'm pretty happy with that development

Sounds like Currys have done good then. Glad to hear you've got it sorted. I am having a similar problem, but with some dirt on the focussing screen. The 50D is brand new and can't seem to shift it. I'm going to have to live with it for the time being until I think it needs a clean/service.
