Looking at cooking a Beef Stifado tonight. I was just wondering if anyone has eaten this whilst in Greece. What if anything would they serve to accompany it? What recipe`s I have looked at do not really mention too much about it, roast potatooes or a pasta being about it so far. I was thinking perhaps a Bread of some description, as the dish itself is mainly made of meat and onions does anybody have any ideas for a bit of a side dish or something to go with it?

I would go for egg pasta (hilopittes), but good home made crusty bread would be a close second.

ps What time should I come round? ;)

i would serve green bean salad and home made bread..

Home made bread and a Greek salad. Or cut potatoes into cubes and roast with rosemary.

Cheers guy`s, maybe Green Bean salad, Pasta and Bread eh? :naughty:

Whenever I've had it in Greece, it's always been served with just bread and we normally just order a Greek salad with it and of course, wine.

It's quite a hearty dish so doesn't really need anything else.
Cheers Marc, well it is well under way now and should be ready around Eight. As you say it is quite a hearty dish but me and my mate ( Yes I have at least one ) will probably consume a good portion or three :D I whent for some Egg pasta as well but not the hilopittes which was suggested. Wine there is a plenty as well as the usual Brandy bottle.

A warm hand & a Viagra tab??

:D:p

:shake::shake: ;)

Fair enough, I've only had it at Greek tavernas with the missus so not consumed in large portions. TBH, I'm more of a kleftiko man myself. ;)

Well the dish turned out really well and was loved by all. This did come at a premium though. I had removed the casserole pot to the worktop ready to serve, the pasta had finished draining and was on top the cooker. I took the lid of the pot and placed it down. Just as I turned to start serving out the lid slid off the top of the cooker and down the side of the unit heading to the floor. With my Ninja type reactions I half turned my body led back slightly and pushed my left knee up against the lid trapping it, this however left me in a dodgy stance of being somewhat rat arsed and standing on one leg on a fairly slippery surface with most of my body weight going backwards  Again natural reactions kicked in and I thrust my right arm out on to the worktop to stop me falling backwards. I was now left in a twisted and contorted position that I never thought was possible, left leg in the air, right leg stretched out in front of me and all my weight bearing down on my right arm. You know when you get into these situations, thoughts start running through your head as to how you are going to get out of it? Well, that was a no brainer for me to decide as I started to feel what it was like to have your arm resting against a Casserole dish that had been in the oven for two hours :gag: faster than a speeding bullet I flicked myself back on to my feet and proceeded to dance around the house shouting some rather choice words, all to the amusement of the missus and friends who thought I was putting on some form of entertainment for them

Next time it`s going to be Salad and a choice of meats :rules:

Lol. I've got an image in my mind akin to the slow motion shots in The Matrix but it was probably nothing like that if you've had several shandies..:lol:

That was about it in a Nutshell Ian
Almost everytime Ive had its been served with small cut/cubes of garlic roast potatoes, various veg and crusty bread

Cheers Dave I will bear that in mind for next time. Lamb or Rabbit is a favoured choice as well by a lot of people  I might do the Rabbit one next time and see how the Wife copes, she has never tried it before.

southern fried rabbit (sorry i know it is nothing like what you are talking about) is great kids won't eat it now they found out it is rabbit but hay ho.

A warm hand & a Viagra tab??

I have to say that, knowing Rich in the way we all do, that was my first thought too :naughty:

Your cooking style is excellent Rich, I can see you in the kitchen now, juggling the pots and pans, trying to keep upright, and well under the influence

The last time I heard a story like that was from Gerard Hofnung :rules:, oh dear, perhaps I am showing my age now, but I think a lot of members here will remember him.

For those that do, and for those who are asking who the hell is Gerard Hofnung, heres one of his famous speeches, supposedly meant for his employer.

Respected sir,

when I got to the top of the building, I found that the hurricane had knocked down some bricks off the top. So I rigged up a beam, with a pulley, at the top of the building and hoisted up a couple of barrels of bricks.
When I had fixed the building, there was a lot of bricks left over.
I hoisted the barrel back up again and secured the line at the bottom and then went up and filled the barrel with the extra bricks.
Then, I went to the bottom and cast off the rope.
Unfortunately, the barrel of bricks was heavier than I was and before I knew what was happening, the barrel started down, jerking me off the ground.
I decided to hang on!
Halfway up, I met the barrel coming down... and received a severe blow on the shoulder.
I then continued to the top, banging my head against the beam and getting my fingers jammed in the pulley!
When the barrel hit the ground, it burst it's bottom... allowing all the bricks to spill out.
I was now heavier than the barrel and so started down again at high speed!
Halfway down... I met the barrel coming up and received severe injury to my shins!
When I hit the ground... I landed on the bricks, getting several painful cuts from the sharp edges!
At this point... I must have lost my presence of mind... because I let go of the line!
The barrel then came down... giving me a very heavy blow and putting me in hospital!

I respectfully request 'sick leave'

linky

Hope you enjoyed that :D
