Congrats! how do you go about getting pics published?

Thanks, if you think you have something topical that might interest them, just email them, details on the BBC News website, attaching the photo.

Just be prepared to be berated by professionals who believe you are stealing their food, because the BBC don't pay.

The BBC don't pay. Sorry if I've ruined your livliehood.

And with eager to be published people providing a steady supply of free to use images, It is little wonder why they don't. :nono:

That's brilliant Glenn! Did you email asking to have your picture up? Or are you also the reason they did the news report?

And while I've got you - how have you done your signature, I love the flickr information! Does it update automatically?

good for you Glenn

seriously though, how much should someone expect for a small picture like this?

Not everyone wishes to be known as a "Salesman"
Not everyone is commercially minded.
Not everyone bought a Camera with the intention of extracting money from others.
The OP can do what he wishes with his own photographs without needing permission from "Professionals"

Yes it does ruin my and other professional photographers livelihood you have to remember that we just like yourselves have mortgages to pay and children to feed. Giving pictures away just for a byline is very naive and please remember that the BBC will syndicate your pictures to other media outlets.

My remark about livelihood wasn't directed at you..... In my 59 years I have never been 'eager to be published', in fact I have worked very hard to produce the articles and photographs I have had published in books and magazines. The subject postage stamp-sized image was provided to the BBC to help illustrate a rather dry story which happens to be something in which I have a particular interest. Thank you for your observation.

Having neither a mortgage or children, nor an ego that requires me to get free bylines, I think I am entitled to do what I want with my photographs. The BBC make it clear they can do what they want with my image, suits me. I didn't notice hordes of professionals covering this event, whose livelihood I have ruined by giving my image away.

I will be over the moon if I was published by the BBC, congratulations for it. It always feel very nice when your work is out there for people to see and enjoy, specially with your name on it.

Will you still feel the same in a years time if you were to find out that the BBC have sold your picture worldwide with a BBC syndication credit?

Words fail me at how incredibly nieve and selfish people are.

'I'll do what I want, I bought a camera so screw you' really is a fantastic attitude to others professions.

Thanks. The story had been published but it needed a pic, so i GAVE them one. The Flickr thing is done via bighugelabs.com, I think you need DNA. Yes it updates automatically. Just be sure you get paid for anything you post :D

Photography is not a Profession.
Do you really think I should concern myself with your business, Mortgage or income?

It's true though. If he just likes taking photos which is how all of us start and most of us stay then this is more of a pride thing to have a photo published and that's a fair attitude.

I can, however, understand the professionals point of view that it's a worry if you try and make money out of this type of shot but others can do it for free and are happy to.

Words certainly fail you. I am neither 'neive', selfish nor professional.

Some people like computers, I'm sure if they offer to go in and sort bugs in a multimillion $$ company just for the ego boost people would be understandably upset.

But then that's different as photography isn't a proper job eh.
