Just read this:

"Processed meats - such as bacon and ham - do cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization (WHO)."

Source.

There's some pretty solid science behind this. I'll bet little of that gets mentioned in the coming few days.

Wouldn't it be better for the WHO just to tell us what we can actually eat, or maybe go a step further and only allow shops to sell what we can eat?

yes I saw that on BBC but I think we have known for years over consumption of processed meat was bad for bowel health so its no surprise.
I pretty much gave it up a few years ago, especially sausages, bacon

Does anyone eat processed meat every day? Even before I married a veggie I wouldn't eat processed meat every day and had meat-free days too.

Do people really eat such boring, unvaried diets that they need sausage/bacon every single day? Surely boredom must kill them before the cancer does.

Probably far better just to ignore all of them. I've absolutely no doubt that there is solid evidence behind it, but how many things have they told us were good or bad for us and then 20 years down the line said just the opposite. They're not coming between me and my bacon butty! :D

Interesting that CRUK acknowledge that eating processed meat causes cancer but don't recommend stopping. Hmm.......

The missus limits herself to two bacon toasties per week. She would like more, but like her Brandy it is restricted

As long as microwaved meals are safe... Eat way too many of them.

I very rarely eat bacon or sausages or burgers, but a ham salad sandwich used to be a regular when I was working, and I believe that ham or ham and cheese is the most popular sandwich filling in Britain.

I'm kinda with the Llama on this one, especially sausages, maybe once a month for me, also bacon, blimey if that.
my bit of proceesed is on an occasional pizza on a meal out, maybe 1 every two weeks.

if your diet is made up of a lot of processed meant then you are probably in a bad way anyhow.

Life is a terminal condition. Life without everything that's supposed to be bad for us might be extended by a few years - but they'll feel like a century! Like sugar, alcohol and many other things, moderation is the key.

My father rarely eats processes meats.... He got bowel cancer !

**** happens whatever you eat :)

I think you're spot on there but with the exclusion of smoking...... not just proven to cause cancer but a whole host of other health problems too and seemingly doesn't depend on the amount that's smoked.

Let's face it we'd do nothing and eat nothing if you followed these guidelines by the book!

An old cricket friend of mine died last week, had a double cardiac arrest at the age of 41 (two and a bit years older than me). He carried a few extra pounds but you couldn't really call him overweight, still played the game so must have been reasonably fit & active. Sometimes it seems there no real rhyme or reason :/

And let's face it, the very air we breathe is bloody lethal these days.
Sorry, but life's too short to worry about it.
I also wish they'd tell the full story and say "blah blah MAY cause cancer".

I don't smoke anymore,I rarely drink anymore ,but I,ll be buggered if I,m going to give up eating at nearly 70 I don't really give a flying toss

The world is being run by vegetarians hell bent on us eating the animals food instead of the animals!

Processed meat, such as bacon or hot dogs, causes cancer, a World Health Organization group said in a long-awaited determination on Monday.
The group said red meat, including beef, pork and lamb, probably causes cancer, too.
Although I wasn't aware that pork was red meat ;)

I'll still have my once-a-week bacon butty (on Saturdays). I very, very rarely eat processed meat at other times - been the same for years - and I avoid red meat in the week too, although anything goes for Sunday roast.(y)

Just like sugar, fat, salt, booze etc - it should be fine as long as you don't go mad and kick the arse out of it.

Yes, and in addition much of what we are told is is the media's version of scientific opinion (note that I don't say evidence).

Thoroughly sick of hearing that we should not eat this, drink that, look at the sun, hear loud noises, wear tight clothes. lie down with legs crossed, walk on cracks in the pavements ans so on and on and on .......... ad nauseum.
Just b****r off all you damned know alls, and you know damn alls.

Sounds like you need a Marlboro and a large single malt. :)

The risk of dying is 100%. We are all going to die. If you reduce the risk of dying from one thing, such as infectious diseases, smoking or accidents, then you increase the risk of dying from another thing, e.g. cancer in later life.

That to me at this moment in time sounds a good idea ,shout at the devil and sod them all .the only thing that will come out of this is it gives the government of the day ( there all the same) an excuse to tax something else in the public interests of course

It's interesting how many people are questioning the science and motivation behind this statement.

I suspect a lot of smokers felt the same when all the bad stuff about tobacco started getting broadcast.

So the old saying
"everything I like to do is either Immoral, illegal or fattening"
seems to be true :D

O the 3, which apply to mass debating? Pretty sure it's not illegal (or even taxed, Yet!) or fattening (surely it's exercise?) so it must be considered to be immoral by some people. Poor sods!

Here we go again... quick, lets tax it!!!

We will all die of something, yes by living healthy we will last a bit longer but as other have said, moderation is the key. Aside from drugs like heroin, and smoking, pretty much everything is ok... meat, drink, butter, sugar...

Very partial to bacon and bangers and eat both at least once a week, but its my body, let me decide what i want to put into it. Would rather live till 85 enjoying life than get to 95 living on lentils and cabbage!!!

Apparently a previous European Study showed that vegetarians had the same cancer rate as meat eaters, work that one out

Right that settles it, I'm cutting out the veg from my food, that should half the likelihood

And a lot believed what they were hearing when medics told asthma sufferers to smoke.

Why tiptoe through life just to arrive safely at death.

Great. It'll be a shorter list of things that DON'T give you cancer soon.

living longer gives you cancer - in the past people died of something else first

end of the day being born is terminal - and as with the sugar thread the key is moderation (which is also the difference between this and tobacco, since sausages arent addictive having one occasionally won't leave you buying them every day)

As mentioned in post #16... Do try to keep up, Peter.

Remember when we were told that coffee was bad for you because of the caffeine content ?

So we were advised to switch to decaff.

What happened next ?

Decaff was thought to have some bearing on the incidence of stomach cancer so what were we to drink ?
