Problems with RAW

Please can someone give me a couple of pointers? I must be a complete idiot  I have done a search but couldn't find anything

I have recently bought myself a 450D & have installed Canons DDP.

The other day I took some photos of Tornados at Waddington in both jpg & RAW as a back up as I haven't used RAW much at all.

To cut a long story short after processing the RAW images & converting them to jpg they look awful when opened in Corel Photo Paint, all pixalated & jagged - just like very poor quality images. They look better PSP8 which I have.

I hold my hands as a complete novice with RAW and I am 'playing' with images at the moment so obviously I thought it was me, too much or not enough processing, but no matter how much or how little I process them they look just as rough. So I thought perhaps its the software that had become corrupt but when viewing other jpgs they are fine. It's almost as though Corel just doesn't like the converted images as they again look OK in Windows picture viewer.

Has anyone else encountered this or am I doing something wrong? Any help, tips or hint would be much appreciated....thanks

Not used DPP for years ( Lightroom user), but check the output resolution when you export the images. Not sure if this is available in PS8, but you are not exporting them as a 16 bit JPEG. As far as I am aware it's only Photoshop 5 that can do this but it may be possible in PSE8. This may be screwing Corel. But it should be the same for Picture Viewer though!!!

Try exporting/saving as 8bit tiff (it's a larger file) that should help you..:)

Have you allowed enough time for the images to open fully?
On my old PC, everything looks pixelated for about 30 seconds until the software catches up with the opening speed.

Thanks all for your help, will try your suggestions.

Does Adobe Camera Raw work without having Adobe software?

Just loaded the latest version of DPP on to the Mac. Check you've the latest version. It's 2.8.2.0
here's the link to the download if you haven't got it

http://software.canon-europe.com/

Select your camera etc., and it'll take you to the download site.

OK had a look at the preferences, and couldn't see anything that could give you the problems you are having. On the output side make sure you've checked the EXIF-JPEG option, and that the resize button is not ticked.

Just did a quick batch of images and they all look fine in Photoshop.

Can't think of anything else to suggest at the moment.

Thank you John:)

I've just downloaded updates to DPP & things are looking much better

Just need to improve my photography skills now!!!

Thanks Everyone for bothering to reply

I'm wondering if you managed to be opening a jpeg thumbnail image from a RAW file.

When you "save" in DPP you are saving the processing instructions, not the resultant actual image.

To output from DPP as a jpeg you have to use the "convert and save" or "batch process" functions to apply the processing to create a new file of the image

there are some good tutorials for DPP somewhere on the canon website, but I dont have the link to hand, hopefully someone will arrive with it soon . . .

The latest version I found & downloaded was 3.8.1.0

I am using convert & save, and the quality is 10 and dpi 350

Thanks again :)

I am using 3.4.0.0. Is there a need to upgrade? Does it give any extra benefits, or maybe I should ask whether there are any worthwhile benefits, as the current version seems to serve me quite well at the moment?
