Oh hai talk|photography ,

New Portuguese noob here :)

I recently bought a refurbished Canon EOS 1000D with the 18-55mm Canon kit lens. After reading a bit on the subject, I bought the Canon 50mm f1.8 II to try and learn a bit more.

Without knowing this, my dad went ahead and gave me his vintage Pentax Asahi Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 :bang: so I feel like i just threw money out the window with the Canon 50mm.

I know next to nothing about photography, and been playing around with macro (50mm reversed on top of the kit lens with scotch tape :D ), and been planning to try HDR as well.

Today I ordered a cheap close up lens kit (Polaroid) , a chinese set of extension tubes and a Pentax adapter so i can use the Asahi lens, all from Amazon.uk.

While all that crap is being dispatched, I'm wondering if a combination of tubes + magnifying lens will work with any of the fixed focal length lens so I can avoid using the much slower 18-55, any feedback on this?

Anyway, here are some of my failed attempts :

Hi JP, welcome to TP
There's a nice selection of pics there on your Flickr

Hi there

Nice to see a fellow programmer on here ;)

I'm a Nikon user, but have been playing around a bit with extension tubes and my 50mm f1.8 quite successfully. I did find that anything below f11 meant the dof was far too shallow to be usable though, so slower glass may not be an issue. Do any of your lenses have an manual aperture ring? That tends to be more of an issue with cheap extension tubes..

There are a few good tutorials and write-ups by other people on this forum that should give you more information though.

Welcome to TP. Nice thread subj. if I may say so but it probably will be lost for non C folks ;)

Hey everyone, thanks on all the feedback :)

The Asahi Pentax ->

has manual aperture control, so yeah, wondering if the adapter i bought can be used in conjunction with extension tubes.

Can't wait for the package to arrive :D

That looks like it should work fine. Of course, I've only had my camera a few months and the extension tubes a bit less than that, so I could be wrong. Have a play around and read up on some tutorials. Extension tubes are fairly difficult to work with, but great fun!
