Unless you were me in which case you would take what's good advice and leave what's not. Not all hands feed!If it were my first time at something like this I'd be taking all the advice I could get whether I agreed with it or not. I wouldn't be biting the hand that feeds me...

It was today by the way and if I were to let the "big boys" get their shots, I wouldn't be in the good positions I got.
Sorry but that advice wasn't the best, I'm not there to play in the hiarachy or make friends, I was employed to doa job, same as everyone else.
Lol!!!!!!!!I think Gerard might think that the only cards tat can be exchanged are memory cards...
Some folk seem to think because you haven't done it then you don't have the capability.Good for you standing up for yourself and doing the best job you could. I bloody hate kowtowing to folk who think they are better or should have privileges just because 'they should'. [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER]. Well done.

Personally I dislike this thinking.
It went well, I'll write up later on the laptop and give few images.Agree 100%
If everyone lived by this thinking then there would never be any progress of any sort.
Anyway, how did it go Phil?
Jesus Christ!
Please continue swapping business cards as per normal!

Couldn't helpbut wonder how many photographers there are on here....

...it's not, it was a one off job. I couldn't think of anything worse to sap my love for photography, it was bad enough working with families lol.To be honest I would've been a bit more tactful; they obviously have past experience in these environments and if it's one you're thinking of moving into long-term you want to be making all the friends you can.
But not all photographers will be on talk photography...eh? surely we are all photographers on here or it would be a bit odd joining a photography forum!!!!
I can see how it works that way now - not so much for today but I can imagine at red carpet events etc it would be exactly as you put.Agreed. Some people really do like to over think things. You rock up, take the photos you need - preferably without being a complete arse and making others' jobs harder than they need to be. Then you all go home. There are no secret handshakes or unwritten rules you need to follow. Just act like a decent person as you would anywhere else in life.
FWIW I shoot at these things all the time, as 'the official' alongside all the press guys - which sounds more like the position you may have been in. It goes one of two ways: if one of the well known old press guys who knows every celeb and their cousin from the A list to the Z list is there, we often just let him run the wall and greet people because it's easier; then everyone else shoots second. If not, or if the event organisers ask for it, or I need to be shooting something away from the wall in the next couple of minutes - then the official photographer comes first, press guys second. Works fine, everyone's happy, everyone gets their jobs done.
It's really pretty straightforward stuff.
That's nice but if you are caught doing it while working for a major news agency you will never work for them or indeed any other again.
Putting your name to a photo that isn't yours destroys editorial integrity and the ability of people to trust the source of photos.

Are you saying that "Give us a neg" never existed ?![]()
I know who that was, he was using a 1DX I think plus some pretty hefty glass.
