Wasn't sure whether this belonged here or in the photography bit as it's not strictly on topic....

I have a press pass (as a student member of the NCJ) which I obtained whilst doing my A level photography course. Now I have never used it, but thought it might come in useful!

Anyhow, I visited Stonehenge last weekend and there was a reduced admission rate for students. Not one to miss an opportunity to save money (being from Yorkshire & all that ;) ), I produced my press pass along with student NCJ card, hoping that they'd accept this as proof of student status and let me in for the reduced rate. Well, they went one better than that and I got in for FREE as I was classed as 'a member of the media' :woot: How cool is that? Stonehenge is part of the National/English Heritage Trust (or whatever it's called) so I'm now wondering if anywhere else lets media members in for free.

So, those of you who have press passes, now is your chance to find out where it will get you;)

always worth flashing credentials around in places that want access to your wallet. I've had a similar thing happen in a few places but its always seemed to be an off hand decision on the part of the employee...

cool Cheryl :) have been meaning to go Stonehenge for ages, i dont have a press pass, so ill just have to be like the normal peeps and pay lol

You can arrange to go before it opens (or after it closes) and get access to the stones as well apparently

How is it that you could go to stonehenge and not have access to the stones?

Cheryl, let me know if it works for race days at tracks (ie Brands Hatch). If it does, me and the misses will be straight down for British Superbikes...you could get me in as your photographers' assistant and Kay'll cook up some Yorkshire pud etc for dinner.

OK....er buddy....................:D :D :D

I believe the area surrounding it is so erosion damaged by visitors feet that you now have to walk around it on a restricted wooden walkway, with access to within the stones being verboten.

One entry found for verboten.

Main Entry: ver·bo·ten
Pronunciation: v&r-'bO-t&n, f&r-, ver-
Function: adjective
Etymology: German, from Old High German farboten, past participle of farbioten to forbid (akin to Old English forbEodan to forbid), from far-, fur- for- + biotan to offer -- more at BID
: FORBIDDEN; especially : prohibited by dictate

:naughty:

So not even Min's press pass will get her into Stonehenge ?

:shake:

Oops missed this, Anton, they have a fence round the stones now, so you dont get close enough to touch them, and cant stand in the middle to take photos, is as Cedric said to do with erosion, and damage to the stones, people were vandalising them and graffiti'ing them. But if you book, and go early or late, you can get access to the centre with a guide.

Why can't we go into the centre circle?

The stone circle has had a lot of footfall over the past few centuries and for conservation purposes it has to be roped off. We do, however, have out of hours Stone Circle Access which allows us to monitor numbers.
