So I've decided to take a trip out to Ukraine in around a month's time to visit the Chernobyl exclusion zone. I'm hoping it's gonna make for some interesting photos but I'm a bit reluctant to bring my 'good' kit to the zone where it may be confiscated on leaving the zone if it has been contaminated. So I'm looking at getting a poverty kit that I'll not be too fussed about ditching if the worst happens!

I'm thinking of picking up a 20D or 30D depending on the prices and a general purpose lens. Now I'm not sure what lens to go for. I know the 18-55mm never got great reviews but I feel a zoom lens could be more versatile than the 50mm f/1.8.

I have the 50mm f/1.8 so thought I could take that and maybe pick up a 17-85mm IS?

I could probably find a cheap heavy tripod in Kiev if I felt I desperately needed it.

Anyone got any advice for building a poverty kit? Thanks in advance!

How about a Pentax K10D with 18-55mm and 50-200 lenses, good quality body with in built stabilisation and weatherproofed too.
Only mentioned it because I was just pricing up some stuff for my daughters friend. and seemed like it would be ideal for what you want.

My reckoning was about 200 or so quid all in, not that much to leave behind, but very versatile.

See what CEX have on the shelf, check MPB and EBay. I mention CEX first because they seem to be quite keen on price with bodies that are several models old.

Oh, and several small memory cards.. wouldn't do to get every shot confiscated if the body was.

Is this a 28DL trip? I've been tempted a few times.

Also try Cash Generator, they don't always seem to know the value of kit so it can be priced very well. Apart from that the usual second-hand dealers, eBay, Preloved, Gumtree, Amazon marketplace, etc.

Pick something up from the classifieds I'd look for a 30d and an is kit lens which is cheap as chips and actually very decent stopped down. Then sell it for similar money when you return.

The K10 is certainly food for thought. Scouring ebay just now for bargains!
Not a 28DL trip, it's something I've wanted to do for a long time so decided to head to Kiev for a few days. Can't wait!

Remember to pack a pocketful of bolts of anomoly detecting..

Not a Stalker SOC fan then? I've always been amazed how closely the game environment mirrors the photographs I've seen taken in Pripyat.

I have been looking at a trip there, and have never heard of kit being confiscated!

form what I understand, you cant put your kit down on the floor and things like that though, so might be an idea for a sling type bag?

I've got them downloaded and ready to play on my PC but haven't got round to it yet! :)

I'm booking mine through Chernobyl Tours who have on their website:
'In case of radiation contamination of photo/video equipment and personal belongings, which cannot be decontaminated on checkpoints down to allowed limits, these objects will be confiscated from owners. No claim may be made to the Zone’s administration and trip organizers.'

Sling bag could be a shout actually. I have a Flipside 400 but that might be a bit bigger than I really need and I can't really separate the photo gear from the day gear which would be a bit of a pain!

gf1, 20mm and the 14-45. Sorted. Cheap second hand and is actually a great urban explorers camera. I Use it when I go to dodgy places.

Also the only likely way you'll get contaminated is through touching stuff which the tours suggest you refrain from doing.
