Temperature - I like your 2nd image best Andy, nice vibrant colours and very sharp focus. The time lapse photography is an interesting experiment too and works well.

Well, just spent a hour photographing some plant abstracts....went to get the SD memory card out and, yes....only the CF card was in....and I've left my camera to PC lead at work...and I'm off work until 11 June.....and I'm going to :bat: myself.

Anyway, we're off to Bridlington tomorrow for my grandaughter's 1st birthday...so plenty of beach abstracts I suspect :D

Hi andy, I actually like number one although I think I would like to see the rest of the flame whilst keeping the close crop on the top of the candle.
I was actually thinking a close up of the wick burning would be good and there it was, this shot is superb:clap: How did you highlight the wick? Did the new flash come into play with some OCF?

Number three is very clever, just not really fitting the theme for me. I still need to know how you did it? Lots of shots all stacked maybe?

#2 for me, good DOF and very interesting treatment of the subject.

Temperature #1 I'm liking a lot , being able to see the whole flame, wick & top of the candle makes the image work for me so :clap:

Temp 2 also works & love the detail you've caught in the wick plus the colors are spot on.....would've worked as abstract for as well :thumbs:

Can you share with how you took the 2nd shot ? Filters ?

Abstract....whatever it is it's on theme :lol: there's def some blurry area's ,not sure if thats from stacking or the miss focused bits you mentioned ? Guessing it's something fairly small as taken with the macro ? What is it with this stacking malarky ? Is it simply that the DOF is so thin you couldn't get it all in focus in one shot ? Could you get the same effect using a large DOF & longer exposure ? Not picking holes just trying to understand :thumbs:

Thanks, yeah, bit annoyed at the OOF sections. These photographs were taken at f16 which goes to show how shallow the DOF is.

Pair of interlocked forks...:D

With macro, the DOF is wafer thin...these were taken @ f16...and I still had to stack 17! I guess I should have focused better to avoid the IOOF areas :bonk:

Abstract - I'm not sure how focus stacking works as I never done it myself, but the image appears to be soft all the way through and there's also a fair amount of noise. On a positive note; I like the composition and it definitely fits the theme.

Hi, yeah, part of the wick is a tad over exposed..getting this exposed correctly was a nightmare...

Abstract, not sure about being soft all the way through, if anything, I've sharpened a tad too much.

Looks like it was shot out of a moving car window to me, not sure about the dark bits at the bottom but you've ended up with a lovely smooth sea and sky with just the right amount of texture. ;)

Thanks, yeah, I'd agree regarding the vibrancy but there wasn't much there in the first place.

Thanks, I composed to include the wall at the bottom to give a nice layered...light to dark....effect.

Liking both abstract submissions Andy.
You seem to be trying different techniques each week which is commendable.

#1 Good concept, bang on theme. Your processing suits the subject, I wouldn't say that you've over sharpened it, I think the shiny metal can take it. The only thing that catches my eye is the foreground prong, just a wee bit oof but everything else works well.

#2 I tried this technique today but think I over complicated it by trying to take it with the camera on a tripod. I think it would be better just panning. I like this effect and possibly you could have taken it a bit further in pp by blurring the elements of the photograph more. I think this is an image that would work very well as a large abstract print. The colour layers are spot on, good work Andy. Iain

Hi, Iain, it's very important to me to try different thinks and learn from my mistakes, and successes....:D

Well, Mark asked for more vibrance and you wanted more blur....guys I had a go and think you're right. I was going to blur more but wanted to maintain some detail. Thanks for the suggestions :thumbs:

I actually thought, 'Might get this printed as a poster!', but I'm quite lazy and probably won't put it on the wall. I bought a poster sized photograph off a TP member last year and had another one of mine printed poster size...both are in the corner in their tubes...:bonk: main reason, I think, is that a decent frame costs a fortune...

Abstract - I like the four distinct bands of colour and think it works well, the 2nd image IMO is better and has benefitted from a little extra tweaking :thumbs:

Hi Andy, I also prefer your second tweaked shot- last time I was at Bridlington I was accompanied by 90 children on our school trip!!:) The beach was full of green sweatshirts that day:lol::lol:

Andy, order frames online. I got a really nice real oak one for my flight shot, custom made at about 2' x 1', with card mount, for £35, which was half what I was quoted in several places locally for an oak effect one!

I know it's sad to see local shops go under, but neither one I went to gave a good impression, and with that kind of cost difference, supporting them just can't be justified.

Loving the edited version BTW :)

I asked myself a question today, "Am I learning anything by doing the 52!"...and the answer was not really. I am learning is how to see photographically (which is very important to me) but I'm not sure my photography, overall, is improving.

I'm not fishing for compliments just an observation.

What I might do is link a theme with a technique, if this week's theme is, for example, 'stitch', I light link it with small apperture, then next week link it to a very fast shutter speed.:cuckoo:

Just an idea.

Random - clever idea and good technique and composition. i like the small case random 'd' and the colours and the contrast between the 2 halves.:thumbs:

Temperature - both good shots but #2 indicates temperature better to me. #2 has good separation between the wick and the flame - almost as if they exist independently. Good black background.

abstract - like the seascape a lot. I like the neutral colour which gives the scene a quiet soft, feel. Again good technique. :thumbs:

Even if you are not learning from your posts, I think that there is a lot there for us lessers to consider. Thanks for posting and explaining.
 
I prefer the smoother edit of #2 although as Mark commented earlier I would have liked some more vibrancy. Probably difficult on what might have been a dull day though.

From my point of view not having had a proper camera for long I do feel I learn something every week with this. There are some weeks I am frustrated with it but the thought process is good, ie how to achieve what I am thinking about, it doesn't always work but it does introduce a new way of thinking every week. I think you get more out of it than you know.

Good images by the way and you obviously put a lot of effort into what you do :thumbs:
 
Random - really good interpretation boosted by the reflection.
Temperature - #2 for me with great colours in the wick. I'd be worried about my lens melting getting this close lol
Abstract - another fine shot using stacking, really pulls out the detail. I like the second entry but would prefer more even spacing between low and middle sections
 
Abstract - both pics are really good and really interesting.
The forks - a macro shot WITH lots of DOF. Just because it is so unnatural makes it look so stunning. I presume it is the stacking (whatever that is!) that gives you the enhanced DOF.
#2 For me it is the incredibly sharp horizon that really makes this photo - whilst everything else is blurred. Wasn't it really difficult to pan with the camera exactly horizontal?
