Hi all,

I see the poppies are starting to appear on the side of the road again, so I'm assuming there maybe some fields in the vacinity. I live in the Cheltenham area and was hoping somebody could point me in the direction of some poppies as they probably won't be in the same place as last year!! I'm prepared to travel a bit, maybe an hours drive is within reason. Once again thanks for any help!

My favourite poppy field is now a housing estate. :'(:'(

I'll be keeping my eyes open for anything good on my travels though and I'll let you know when I find somewhere good. :)

Went past what has been the local Poppy field a couple of days ago ... and there were horses grazing on a sea of green! :(

This was the most spectacular field Ive personally seen to date, in Shrewsbury.
Only lens I had back then was my 50mm 1.4, so Id love to back with a bit more fire-power and have another shot at it.
If anyone lives near there, Id be grateful of the heads up incase of a wasted journey.

Thought I'd make a post to bump this thread!! :)

Managed to get these last year near Birdlip which is near Cheltenham, but i'm still yet to see any fields this year. Be nice to know what you think??

Right i've tried posted the pic via the url of the photos on my Picasa account which is avalible for public viewing, can anyone explain what i'm doing wrong?

So instead of Spring Watch, should we make this thread Poppy Watch :) and document all the fields we see on our travels so that others might be able to shoot them.

Thought I'd make a post to bump this thread!!

Still not seen anything and I've been all over the last week or so. Keeping an eye out though.

Was in the Dordogne region of France this time last year. Loads of poppies out. Probably a bit far to go though:lol:

Lots of people on this and other forums are looking for poppies - my view is the wet weather and lack of suitable land (due to changing attitudes and management) will result in fewer 'fields' of poppies, and what there are will be around later in the summer when the ground has dried out a bit.

Just an opinion .. what do I know?!

Well i went for really long drive late last wk, covering all the places i've previously seen them, not a sausage, Suddenly occurred to me that it's been quite a cold spring, maybe they'll be a bit later?!

Any pointers why the pics from my previous post don't show as i've still not worked it out?

The Poppies are out here in full bloom now .... its just that there are no actual fields of them, merely dribs & drabs.
Hope someone spots somewhere decent soon

Wrong area But I did pass a field at lemsford (opposite Brocket Hall on the B653) Hertfordshire this morning, I dint have the opertunity to stop.

Not sure whether Picasa will show just the photo in a direct link, you may have to upload them to Photobucket or something similar.
Have a look at this ink and see if you can see what you need to do. :)

I'm in Gloucester and have been looking for a field too. One of my friends told me that there's one near Whittington on the A40 towards London. Haven't been to check it out yet but am planning to at the weekend. Will let you know if I find anything...

HTH,

Poppies are lovely to photograph but are you beginning to get the feeling that as soon as field sprouts somewhere, it's going to be surrounded by snappers stood shoulder to shoulder.

I think Poppies are seriously down this year. We were in the Poitou Charentes region of france a couple of weeks back and there's usually fields of them. This time hardly any. I did manage to find a few to photograph.

Edit: Now I'm home I can put the pic up
Last year this was all poppies

If I'm not typing this too late, take a little wander around before leaping out the car at the first sign of red. There are quite a few fields and some are a little more dense and random than others.

Have fun. :D

I see a trip out at the weekend!

I dont think there are any round by me :( there all yellow

Looks like i'll be taking a trip this weekend myself - see you all there!!! :)

And finally thanks to Susane I've worked out how to post pics, so for now here are a couple of my efforts from last years crop!

Be nice to know what you think.

I seed sum:banana:

I think they're just a little late, been watching a couple of fields just of the M1 on my Sheffield travels, they did show promise early this week, bit spartan but widespread.
Anyway, I noticed this evening they're thickening up, gonna throw a roll of velvia 50 at them if I can google earth how the heck you get to em.

Joxby can you give a little more detail about where they are? roads? I was going to head up that way this weekend because of someone else mentioning about them.

Nopers, I need to look again tomorrow, I've looked on google earth but I'm having a tough time finding ANY roads in the region I think they are.

What sort of region were you looking at? I have heard positive things around the eckington and aston areas. I will let you know if I find any this weekend. But house hunting is first on the agenda!

So I drove out there this morning, the fields are half decent, reasonably dense but some are tricky to get to (hawthorn bushes/drainage ditches/all that crap)
I shot them all except #4, I didn't see it till I was all outta film and on my way home, it looks by far the best, easiest to get to and pretty thick.
#1 is easy but a bit flat and a fair amount of oilseed yellow, still looks cool though.
You can see #3 from the motorway, its a square of red in a sea of green, that and #2 are a sod for access.
There is a field actually on junction 38, its either gonna be the holy grail of poppy fields in a week or so, or not get any better,

i have a poppy garden near me

some house that nobody is living on there garden is just filled

I drove down to Salisbury last night, minus camera, and discovered a small field of poppies on the A345, Amesbury to Salisbury road. On the junction with the Boscombe down turning. They are also lining the fields on the right hand roadside leading into Salisbury.

OK, after further investigation in my zen like mission to find a local poppy field i've found out that there maybe another field near the Falconry near Chipping Norton on the (A44). (Found out through another forum!) The reason i say maybe is that the link to his photo shows that it was uploaded in July of last year? So if anyone lives near there would be nice to know if they're out again this year! I am also awaiting a response from the person on the other forum to see if he's actually seen them this year.

More promisingly, in the local paper's weekend magazine (Gloucestershire Echo), there in their picture of the week they have a photo of a poppy field in Shipton. Which is quite close for me, so i shall be checking it out before the weekend is here. I will let you know what I find! If anyone is passing, again it would nice to have a heads up!

If you're close to Cirencester, I spotted a field at the weekend by the side of the Bibury road, just after the turn off to the A429

Thanks, it's certainly closer than Chipping Norton, i shall be off that way over the next couple of days. Anymore you just let me know!!

Damn I missed this thread before :( I have been on the look out for poppies around here, but have found nothing!

Anymore info on the ones you found joxby? I had heard there are normally some at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park - which is Junction 38 so thinking I might head down there the next sunny day, and just hope I am not too late :(
