Poppy fields

Damn I missed this thread before :( I have been on the look out for poppies around here, but have found nothing!

Anymore info on the ones you found joxby? I had heard there are normally some at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park - which is Junction 38 so thinking I might head down there the next sunny day, and just hope I am not too late :(

Yep, its that junction, you're not too late, they're probably better now than they were when I went.
The one on junction 38 never really fulfilled its promise, but those on the map are still going strong.
I'd recommend number 4, its the easiest to get to, not sure about an angle of attack I didn't shoot it.
The others are further along the same road, there may be more back towards 38 around the sculpture park I dunno, you'd have to do a bit of scouting but the ones on the map definitely still existed today.

OK Ignore the Cirencester one.
There's parking in the driveway of the organic farm shop just after the lights, but not enough poppies in the field to make a good photo, plus it's got a 3 wire waist high electric fence around it.

There's a promising corner of poppies towards the traffic lights but noway of getting near without trespassing a long way around the field.

Sorry - looked ok from driving past at the weekend.

Cheers - I cant see a map, which is why I got a bit confused earlier :p

aha! found the map in your post up there, wasn't displaying as part of the message for some reason :(

More promisingly, in the local paper's weekend magazine (Gloucestershire Echo), there in their picture of the week they have a photo of a poppy field in Shipton. Which is quite close for me, so i shall be checking it out before the weekend is here. I will let you know what I find! If anyone is passing, again it would nice to have a heads up!

Right after an evening at the cinema there was still some daylight left so i popped upto the one at Shipton minus the camera. There is indeed a very decent field of poppies which i will be going back to fully armed! You can't miss it, it's on the right hand side of the A40 heading out of Cheltenham opposite the turning for Shipton in the the field next to the Frogmill Inn which is currently still closed since last years floods. But you'd see the field way before you get there anyway!

Hooray!!!

OK, after further investigation in my zen like mission to find a local poppy field i've found out that there maybe another field near the Falconry near Chipping Norton on the (A44). (Found out through another forum!) The reason i say maybe is that the link to his photo shows that it was uploaded in July of last year? So if anyone lives near there would be nice to know if they're out again this year! I am also awaiting a response from the person on the other forum to see if he's actually seen them this year.

The guy on the other forum has replied to say that, he hasn't seen the ones near Chipping Norton as yet this year and forgot to check when he went past on Sunday:(

Newbury weekly news has a story today about fields of opium poppies:

THESE delicate pink flowers swaying in an early summer breeze would not usually attract a second glance, despite their fragile beauty.
But sharp-eyed Newbury Weekly News reader Edward Page, from Birds Lane, Midgham, noticed that these plants, at Brown Candover and Chilton Candover in North Hampshire, are usually more at home in areas such as Afghanistan.
For they are Papaver Somniferum - more commonly known as the Opium Poppy.
Around 30 acres have been given over to cultivating the poppies, which, despite their reputation as the raw ingredient of heroin, are sought after to produce valuable pain-killing drugs such as codeine and morphine.
There is currently a shortage of opiate-based pain-relievers and these poppies will later be harvested and processed for the National Health Service.
The seeds - up to 10,000 per single pod - will be used in the food industry or to produce oil.

I'm sure you've all had enough of my obsession with this subject but an Uncle has let me know that he saw a field of Poppies from the train where the Severn Valley Railway meets the A456 near Bewdley. I plan to take a trip up there one day next week, but if anyone lives near by and can verify the field is accessible from the road that would be great!

Any if anyone can sort this grey windy weather out that would be even better!!!

I'm going to try and go poppy hunting on the weekend (pregnant wife permitting! ;) ) - anyone seen any in the Bristol Area?

Matt

Anyone know of any decent poppy fests in Warwickshire?

Well, friday afternoon, I braved the wet, windy, grey weather and checked out the poppy field at Shipton with Camera in tow this time, I was not completely happy with the results when i got home, obviously because of the conditions. Having had another look at them today i'm thinking that maybe i was being a little harsh on myself. So i'm posting a few for your C&C!

The first 4 are taken from hiding under a tree from the rain

The last one, I was just on my way back to the car and some blue sky appeared for literally 30secs or so, but I was well away from the main body of the poppies:'( but i've ended up quite liking it :)

Let me know what you think!

I'm off now to check out the field near Bewdley
