Okay so this is a bit of an odd one and it's something I've been mulling over since last weekend but I genuinely don't know what the answer would be...

Long story short, last weekend someone decided to park so close to my drivers door in a public car park that even an Amoeba would struggle to get into the car, much less someone who is more than a little bit fat like me...thankfully @JulesP was there and able to climb across from the passenger side of the car and pull the car out for me...

But this got me thinking if this were to happen in the future what course of action can I actually take? such as contact the local police etc is it an offence to deliberate block someone out of their car in a car park?

And yes I was parked well in between the lines near as damn it dead on central my own space

That's a pita.
Were they also parked within their bay?

There was the recent story of an Audi driver parking ridiculously close, not sure what could happen legally.

..then again if two Audis need to park in a tight space.....:nailbiting:

Not sure what legal rights you'd have tbh.

I kid you not, a couple of years ago I parked on a local trading estate & went into a store with my moneyboss. When we got back to the car one of those large Police riot-vans had parked way over the white line next to my drivers door within about 12". I had to clamber in from the passenger side.
Thing was, the bl00dy car park wasn't even full & there were plenty of other spaces. T055er.

I remember once parking in a marked bay in bristol with cars either side parked so badly (not centered in their own spaces) that the only way I could exit from my car was via the boot!
It was the only spare space so a case of "beggars can't be choosers"

I couldn't get in the drivers side of Matts car (didn't try but knew I wasn't gonna fit) and also struggled to get in the passenger side - it really was close!
Matts car isn't small by any means but if I cant leave enough room for someone else to get in their car then I wont park in a space - mainly because if I cant get out easily, they wont get in theirs easily and will end up leaving a nice little dent in my door!

No they were encroaching into my bay from their own :(

To be honest I'm thinking those Audi's are actually just mating :P though I do notice that one isn't exactly well parked is it  and I don't mean the one on top  I remember that one from the metro, the one next time mine wasn't quite that close but I'd say there was only a couple more inches of space

Yeah that would really pee me right off, and I would have been taking down their details

Sounds bad, I do maintain the size of spaces is too small these days, let's face most cars have got larger in recent years, but if anything spaces seem to be getting smaller :(

Yeah not the smallest car at all but as you confirm it was still an impossible challenge to get in via the drivers door :(

I was tempted to `key` the riot van, BUT, it had the dark tinted windows & I couldn't be sure there wasn't anyone inside!

I get that temptation but that would have put you in the wrong :( I was very tempted to leave a little message in dirty paintwork of car...

Mrs B who is disabled went into KFC in Cumbernauld and came out to find a wagon parked across the disabled bays blocking her in and the driver was nowhere to be seen. The ignorant pr!ck of a driver couldn't care less when he returned after about 20 minutes and the company didn't give a toss when she contacted them - but stick a photo on twitter and its amazing how they change their tune pronto quick like ... Power to social media!!!

A dirty message? Bit like a dirty protest? Crap in a crisp packet & left under the wipers! (y)

Social media is wonderful for that kind of situation :) I often have to park quite unusually for loading the car after jobs, (you don't really want to have to carry 6-800kgs of disco kit any further than needed, but I do always try an avoid blocking people as little as possible and if I can will move to let people out, not always instantly possible

There is no excuse for bad parking, it is down to laziness and lack of consideration. I had just parked up in Asda last week, and a young woman (not LADY) parked next to a car in front of me. She drove in front on, not caring that the owner of the other vehicle would not be able to get in their drivers door (she was well over the line), then got out without looking and walked off - unbelievable.
I once did a "Banksy" on a car because I couldn't get in the driver's side (My OH got in the passenger side, crawled across and reversed out), and in Bordeaux, someone parked up against my rear bumper in a timed parking spot on the street. I had to reverse the car, pushing the other car back (pinged the bonnet) in order to escape.
There is a general lack of consideration for other people amongst some folks, but they fail to realise that their actions can sometimes lead to a reaction.

Reverse and forward "nudging" is common practice in france...so much so that folks often leave their handbrakes off when parked. Crazy.

Many years ago when I worked in an office with a yard at the rear where we parked our cars, people often parked over the entrace to pop to the town,
normally during the day we didn't worry too much as no one needed to get out, we did have a sign saying access needed.
But one day one of the girls was leaving early at lunch time and the entrance was blocked !!!
With the help of the guys from the chinese restaurant we managed to move it along the road and leave it with the driver's door along side a
wall, no chance whoever owned it would get in that side ;)
The icing on the cake was when one of the chinese lads came out with a sticky label saying

Thankyou for your inconsiderate parking.
Next time leave a f****ing tin opener
so I can get mine out

and stuck it right in the drivers view on the screen :ROFLMAO:

Yep. That's one of my pet hates . . . not helped by the fact that I'm completely OCD about my own parking.
It must be straight and totally central between the white lines, wheels straight, windscreen wipers left in the down position . . . or it drives me mad

A few years ago a woman parked her car on the rear ramp of the office I worked in. The ramp had large signs stating that it was required for emergency services access and had to be kept clear at all times. She had been observed parking there before and had been warned about it. On this occasion I stuck a large message liberally pasted with paper glue on to her windscreen. When she returned to her car she saw the message and a few minutes later stormed into our reception claiming that the notice and the glue had damaged her car. I asked her how paper and water soluble glue could possibly do that and also asked how she'd feel if her badly parked car resulted in injury or death to staff in our office because an ambulance or fire engine couldn't gain access.

That appeared to make no difference at all and she continued to rant and rave and threaten legal action. At that point I gave up arguing with her and walked off.

She didn't park there again though.

I'm also completely OCD about my parking, yet I never park within the white lines if I can help it. I'll find a space at the end which has hatching next to it and leave the two passenger side wheels on the hatched area, thus leaving a large space next to my drivers door and the white lines. I always pick spaces at the far end of the car park where people are less likely to park anyway.

One of the things that used to annoy me no end was people who used to think our private drive was fair game to park or turn in

I've forever popping out into the car park at work and telling people to move their vehicles from our premises.
They get one chance.
After that they get an A4 Avery sticky label with a colourful reminder message not to park there again across the windscreen. :)

I've seen this leave scratches in paintwork so many times so probably a good job you didn't to avoid a large bill if caught.

I have heard so many thing like spaces getting smaller but also cars are getting wider due to side impact protection. In my job I see sooooo many cars with Dink's in the doors from carparks. Someone I used to work with always had nice cars and he kept them immaculate. He told me he would park as fast from the supermarket door as possible where there was loads of space. He said that when he came out the supermarket there would still be loads of spaces in the area his car was parked, except one of the spaces next to his lol.

Someone else said they'd always been told try not to park next to 3 door cars because the doos are longer.

Some people just have no consideration for others when parking, I had some arrogant bellpiece in a new Range Rover open his door into the door of my Ford Focus, I gave him a bit of a stare and he just shrugged and walked off. Admittedly there was no damage but his attituded sucked! And to be honest, you'd think he'd be more worried about someone in a 10 year old Focus damaging his motor

As well as trying to avoid 3 door cars, I try and give people carriers or cars that look like they may be transporting kids too!

Sometimes parking across peoples drives is unavoidable. I have to park across peoples drives to work on their neighbours cars but I am always with my van because it has to be near the car I'm working on. It doesn't take long to move if needed, even if I'm running my pressure washer out of the water but and generator in my van.

However, I've been told by a traffic warden that you are allowed to block someone's drive as long as there isn't a car on it. I have tok park on the road outside my house but some of my neighbours have drives. Sometimes parking is limited and you could think of it that if you have a driveway and you go out unless that drive has double yellows across it you are efectivly reserving a space. I can't do that on the road side so what's the difference. Not that I would block a drive and leave my vehicle.

If we have to park in a carpark with out parent and child parking I put my hand between the kids door and the parked car next to us when I open the door for them to get in or out.

Likewise...... sadly some "parents" don't and couldn't give a damn :(

Look up @yplc on Twitter and see how bad and inconsiderate people's parking really is..!!

Will do, only wish I'd taken a photo of it...poor thinking on my part lol only had a 5D round my neck

Parking on your drive yes I can understand that but I dont think there is anything you can do about them using your drive to turn around. maybe someone can post a link to support this either way!

Whats the problem with people turning round in a drive? Its not inconveniencing anybody is it.

If you'd have taken your camera off you would have been able to get in your car :p

Do you think it was the 800mm prime getting in the way? I wish :P

In all seriousness it really was about all of a 4-5 inch gap so about enough that you could you get to the door you could opening it but because of interior trim you'd get a open air gap of below an inch

i think people make too much fuss over minor dings which are purely cosmetic - its a bit like a photographer worried about "brassing" on his camera.

To be fair thats quite a poor and selfish response, and it's nothing like "brassing" on a camera. Some people have cars which represent a lot to them not to mention the significant financial outlay and try to keep it as pristine as best as they can because they take pride in what they own and the appearance. Just look at how much folk spend in terms of both time and money on quality cleaning/detailing. Plus, there is always the fact that cosmetic remedial work carries a financial cost and will always be used during negotiations when you come to sell the car as a legitimate basis of reduction.

How is it fair that for a "minor ding that is purely cosmetic" brought about because someone is clumsy/doesn't care/has no respect for other peoples property/can't control kids (delete as applicable) the victim has to cough up for repairs or reduction in value?

If you want to treat your car like that and are happy if people damage it at will then that's your lookout.

The difference with cars is that when you come to sell them on "brassing" costs you money or even the sale, "minor dents/cosmetic damage" can cost hundreds to fix.

The anology between cars and cameras is tenuous at best IMHO.

its the TR6 owners club getting pay back ;)

by the way if you park the rangie in just one space you arent doing it right - a true ranger rover owner parks across at least 2, and possibly as many as four spaces  http://parking-fail.com/tag/range-rover/

Carrying a box of matches should be part of your cars standard equipment ,as if you damage there paintwork it will annoy them but hardly inconvenience them. ,however a match stuck into every tyre valve will make them feel very deflated .
Revenge is best served cold
