Politeness in modern society - was I wrong?

Yes
Being a father of a 17 & 11 yr old we often get phone calls asking if either is available, the call usually goes like this...

Me - Hello

Other - Hi, is Joe/Kirsty in please

Me - whatever is the appropriate response

However, we have one person who calls for my son (the 11 yr old) and the conversation is always...

Me - Hello

Other - Is your Joe there (in an incredibly rough Barnsley accent )

Now the other day I 'snapped' and replied something like...

Me - Yes he is, but could I just ask (name) is it possible that you could be a wee bit more polite on the phone. Could you perhaps say 'please' or even 'hello' & 'please'

to which this other replied

Other - Is your Joe there please

Me - Great, that sounds much better. Here he is...

Ok - so far so what ???

Well we had the Christmas School do (they gave up Nativity years ago on religious grounds - yes exactly :cuckoo::cuckoo::cuckoo:)

At which said 'Other's' mum approaches me and in a very rude manner told me off and that if I had any issues with her son I had to call her first as he'd been really upset by it all!!!

(btw - he's the class bully, a proven liar and disruptive in class)

Flabbergasted I just laughed it off

Some moments later (as always happens in such situations) I thought... for Christ's sake, I was only asking him to be polite - using words such as - Please, Thank you & Hello

So, after all that, was I wrong to challenge him on the phone, and (if you could have reacted quickly enough) what would you have said to this irate mother when she told you off ???

How dare you suggest to another's child that they should be polite or respect their elders?

Surely you must realise that as a parent that woman had no responsibility for the actions or manners of her child, indeed the blame lies squarely at your door.

You sir are symptomatic of the uncaring society we live in today.

You should be ashamed of yourself. :nono:

Signed,

A social worker.

Kick him in the balls instead next time Dave..........

Either that's a very tongue in cheek viewpoint - or

We're gonna have a fight if we meet :bat::bat::bat:

:lol::lol::lol:

You should have told her that he needed better contrast, less exposure, more saturation....oh, and better friggin manners.

I would have said 'I was simply reminding him that manners cost nothing. A please goes a long way......'

Or if I was quick enough, a smart arsed response of 'I was just doing your job of teaching him manners, seeing as you failed to. The invoice for my parenting tuition is in the post'.

I suppose so, if I was a real social worker I would have suggested a family to family bonding session at the taxpayer's expense

My usual response to a parent like that is to look them up and down, look over at their kid, look back at them, shrug and walk away :)

You see that's the problem...... The parents don't give a monkeys, and Social Services will support them with this attitude.

Me, I once told a friend of my son's to "go home" until he had learned some manners - his father called and said "thanks, just what he needed" :D

So no Mr DD, you were perfectly in the right, and if the child/parent doesn't like it, tell them not to call in future

Steve

I'd have said that you wouldn't have had to correct their son had their parenting skills been upto par.

That should go down well :)

Other's' mum approaches me and in a very rude manner told me off = he's the class bully, a proven liar and disruptive in class

any connection do we think!!

Aparently its now in the teachers "what they can say" book that it is not allowable to tell a child when he/she is being naughty. APPARENTLY if you tell a child he/she is naughty then they will start to think they are naughty

- derrrrrrrr, is that not the point...................

As a non-parent I think DD was right to say what he did. Manors cost nothing, yet some people these days would think that they cost the earth. There are too many little ***** around these days and if the parents cant teach them manors then someone should. I have been in DD's house when this child has called before, and its just rude [and i'm surprised dave hasnt retaliated before now]

If I was the parent, I wouldnt have even mentioned it to the other parent...because it serves the child right.

Regarding teachers not calling the children naughty, its true. And its not something just recent either. I worked in a Nursery about 5-years ago, and we werent allowed to call a child naughty, because it affected the childs self esteem etc, and it was psychologically traumatizing on the child. You had to say "thats not very nice" it was stupid. The child was obviously naughty!

Good job I'm not a school Head then

I'd either be a Hero for promoting good values, or sacked inside a week for expelling so many little ***** and upsetting crap parents

Should have just said "Well you didn't phone, he did!" You probably would have had to say the same to her had she phoned. Obvious where the kid gets his manners from.

That being the case then Dave, you should have kicked her in the kippers..........
