We don't have many hostelries close by, but fortunately our local pub, which is less than a mile away, does excellent value food.
We eat there at least once a month and when we went a couple of weeks ago we saw that they were doing a Valentines Day special for £25 so we booked. I said to my wife a few days ago that I wasn't sure if it was £25 each or for a couple (it turned out to be each and you'll see why in a mo).
Starter was crudites with dips and a huge chunk of bread (a meal in itself), dessert was three different fruit mousses (?). Main course was a choice of meat or fish platter - my wife had the meat, I had the fish.
I didn't take my camera (or my phone) more's the pity, maybe next time, so try to picture this.
Platter - a large oval plate approx 18" x 12".
Mine - let us start on the left, going anti clockwise - three oysters, a dressed crab, three queen scallops, about half a dozen mussels (green lipped?) which were huge (four times as big as any I've seen before), scatter about a dozen or so prawns and end up with a whole lobster. Add a side salad and a dish of dauphinoise potatoes.
Yes, I did finish it but boy did I suffer.
My wife's dish was 'maybe' not as impressive but then again meat is more filling. Half a duck, a breast of pigeon, a nice venison steak and a small gammon joint on the bone. She DID NOT finish so we got a doggy bag (or rather a Jilly bag) and we are finishing that off today.
We had already booked for next Christmas Day, knowing full well that it would be a pig out, but I can't wait to see what is on the menu.
Must take the camera next time.
And yes I did put on a few pounds.
