Hi i have been doing photography for a few months now and was wondering if anyone knows any good books showing me more advanced and creative features and settings. Can anyone help me ?

Understanding Exposure is a book that always gets recommended for beginners - whilst it was written a few years back for film cameras it has been "updated" for the digital age so it's still worth a read.

don't disguard photographic magazines - they're full of stuff, and a good source of inspiriation :)
 
Thanks for all the advice now i just need a book on how to get the postman to arrive sooner :lol:
 
I have the Scott Kelby book, and have the Understanding Exposure book on order from Amazon following many recommendations from this forum.
The Scott Kelby book is very informal and is an easy read. It is also very easy to carry in the camera bag and have a quick look before taking any photos.
 
Well said, re Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. Its the daddy of photography books: the bible.
 
John Hedgecoe stuff used to be pretty solid for teaching the basics, albeit for 35mm film.

'How To Photograph Absolutely Everything' is good for noobs, as is the 'Digital Photography Handbook' (look in The Works for this, it's about a fiver).

'Light: Science & Magic' is a good one for lighting connoisseurs.

'Hotshoe Diaries' By Joe McNally is good for flash users, even if it's a bit casually written.
 
I too have Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson and found it very helpful and easy to read.
 
Duffman, I have a copy of understanding exposure that helped me out when I started. I don't read at all anymore now, having gained a better understanding.

You'll find it is what I call a "marmite" book. Some rate it and recommend it, others slate it. If you would like to see for yourself, I am happy to lend it to you indeffinately should you like. I'll need a day or so until I can 1) find it! and 2) post it.

I found Understanding Exposure priceless when i was starting out!
 
How much does understanding exposure go for?
Do they sell second hand at all? Would be really interested in picking up a copy of it.
 
I'm also a big fan of Michael Langford's Starting Photography and Basic Photography. Starting Photography is an excellent beginner's guide, full of practical advice for taking photos. Basic Photography delves a lot deeper into theory and how things work, but it could do with a bit of updating for the digital age.

Couldn't agree more on this one. You get a lot of information from a wide variance of photographers from all over the world. Just go to your local WHSmiths, have a browse through all the different ones you can see til you find a couple that give you the sort of style & information you're looking for. Then subscribe. :)

:plusone: and "The Moment it Clicks", also by Joe McNally.

Both of Joe's books are anecdotal (probably a more accurate term than "casually written". He generally thinks things through very carefully before he writes/says them), containing real world photo shoots detailing how it was done, why, what problems came up and how they were overcome.

Just a wee hi-jack, I was given Mastering Digital Photography by Freeman from my parents and have read it through, and i'm planning on popping to the library to get understanding exposure, but are there any good books on/that feature action photography? My main interest is shooting mountainbikes and bmx etc.
 
Have a look in your local charity shops which are a great source for photography books for pennies.
i,ve picked up about £200 quids worth of goodphotography books for £8 this week alone..lol ( work nightshift so plenty of reading time)
 
I am about one third of the way through Digital Photography Masterclass by Tom Ang. It is very good.

No worries mate, glad you found it useful. My recent purchase was only 69p! Ok, the shipping was £3, but for under £4 it was a bargain. £23 on Amazon and the copy I got was mint :)
