I have been ruminating on this for a bit.
Technically I am not sure what I have learned. I bought a new flash and tried some off camera work and I am trying to get to grips with Lightroom.. I think that I have learned a bit more about composition and trying to think creatively and imaginatively with some originality thrown in.
The real bonus is that the Challenge makes me think each week of getting out the camera and doing something. I like the idea of a new theme every week. IIn comps I seem to see the same images coming thro – presumably on the basis that if it is a winning shot it should be entered all over the place. The 52 demands more of us because of the constant roll out of ideas. I don’t always succeed in getting a good image and I have produced some indifferent stuff but I have enjoyed it – which I think is the point.
Sometimes I get inspiration for the themes immediately, sometimes it takes longer. Sometimes I carry out my first idea only to decide that it isn’t very good anyway and then back to the drawing board. Often the theme comes through in a phrase (but I am having difficulty with ‘Spread your wings for New Orleans Kentucky bluebird’,!!!
) My main problem has been falling behind because of prevarication.
I appreciate others taking the trouble to comment. After 40 odd themes, I am quite prepared for adverse comments because throughout the year there has been much supportive comment made on all of the 52s threads and thus I feel that any adverse comment would be well meant. The feeling of a community is good, although I realise that many of you know or have met others, and this applies not just to the photos but to events in other’s lives e.g. illness, impending parenthood.
Commenting on other’s threads is time consuming but I think that has to be part of the deal. Recently I looked and commented on 12 threads and it took me nearly 2 hours
(I know my typing is carp, but that is only part of it). One has to see, think, consider, type and try to choose words and phrases other than’ good shot’. It was very manic early in the year and even now I comment on 19 live threads (2 of whom have not posted lately). Sometimes, and its only a small point in the whole scheme, I am disappointed that I get few people dropping by. E.g. of the 17 more live threads on which I comment, only 13 of those 52’ers have commented on any of mine since week 30 and of those, only 4 have commented on all and only 2 have commented on more than 6 of those 12 themes. It’s nice to get comments, however brief and I do appreciate the time that it takes, partic those of you with family and other commitments. But that really is minor. I do feel that I am part of a good group and everyone on whose work I comment does say thanks – good manners all round in the 52’ers!
I think that I will be in for next year because Saturday morning would not be the same. My wife always asks me what is the theme and is quick with suggestions and has even taken part as a prop! So good family entertainment.
