Locations
I live on Long Eaton, on the edge of Nottinghamshire. Just got my first DSLR, a Canon 450D. Was wondering if there were any particularly good places in or around here?

Camera Clubs
Also, saw that there was a Beeston Camera Club (only 10 mins drive from me). And saw a website for a Long Eaton Camera Club, but that's not got anything on it anymore, o not sure if that's still going.

I guess my question before worrying about that though is.... What do people do at Camera Clubs? What should I expect?

Thanks,

David

A friend of mine goes to the Beeston Camera Club. He says its quite good one you've been accepted as a member. They have talks and share shots to get feedback. I'll ask him for more details when I see him on Monday.

I'm a fellow Long Eaton'er too :)

Hi

I grew up in Toton but don't live in the area any more so can't speak about specific clubs, just that most clubs are actually a good way of learning about photography.

Don't know what you want to photograph, but Wollaton Hall is a fave of mine. Got the deer, the Hall itself and some lovely landscapes.

Blimey, that makes at least 3 Long Eatoners in this thread.

My first reaction was that there's loads of places around Long Eaton but then thinking about it I cant think of any pictures that Ive taken here. Wollaton park's a good shout or if you fancy a bit of a trip out head north to Clumber Park/Sherwood Forest/Newstead Abbey. Failing that slightly further afield and you've got the Peak District which opens up a whole range of possibilities!

Cant help on the camera club front Im afraid though, havent got a clue about them...

If you ever fancy going and finding some places in Long Eaton then I'd be up for an explore!

Thanks for the offer Sparks. I need to learn some basics first though I think, before embarrassing myself with another! I raided our local library for Photography books! ;)

Shocked to see 2 of the people replied are LE too! hehe

I don't live too far from the leisure centre, so I guess that park next to there might be worth an exploration for starters. Well, at the weekend anyways, since it gets dark so early now!

I've been thinking about a trip to Wollaton Park.

Around LE you have some nice older buildings in Breaston, even some of the pubs would make interesting shots.

Hockeynut - I'm guessing you're either Pennyfields or Dales? I'm on the Dales.

I've not lived there long enough to know the local names for them. But I'm guessing the Dales, judging by the amount of street names with that in them nearby to me.

Yeah,if its got dale in the name its the dales estate :)

Pennyfields is the one directly accross from the Leisure Centre.

I learned to swim in Long Eaton (true and very boring story).

Hi

I grew up in Toton

blimey grumpybadger ,me too

another one from Toton :help:

tbh Long Eaton is a bit crap photo op wise AFAIK

It all depends on what you want to shoot though

Theres a steam railway thingy up at Ripley, not far from you. Newstead Abbey has already been mentioned. How about Sherwood Forest about 20 miles away. East Mids airport if planes are your thing. I did go down Triamph road in Nottingham the other week and the university has some good architecture going up at the moment if buildings are your bag.

Loads really....

Newstead Abbey is one of my favourites, Wollaton Park, Sherwood Forest or even a wander along the Trent Embankment is worth taking a look at.

Looks like this might turn into the official nottingham thread

Do you tend to take a tripod along to Newstead Abbey, or indeed to many of these parks and the like that people have mentioned? As I don't have one yet, so would need to start without. Plus, I've got to get past this I guess, but doesn't one feel daft using a tripod in such places?

I'm not a million miles away in Castle Donington.
For locations, there is:
- The AeroPark up near EMA (go through Donington on the main road, up the hill. Turn left at the roundabout at the top) it's only open on Sundays during the winter though.
- There are a good few places to park on the road around the airport to get plane snaps.
- Check what's on at Donington Park.

I work very close to Trent Embankment, once I have a bag to protect my camera I'll be heading down there at lunchtime. ;)

Though saying that, Architecture has always fascinated me, so I think I might develop a liking for that type of photo.

I would go along with Newstead Abbey park. Also somewhere I will be going when the weather gets warmer is Holme Pierpont. Especially when they have the F1 powerboats.

F1 Power boats sounds interesting. Post a heads up on here when they are on will you. Might be worth a trip out and a Notts TPers jolly boys outing....

I had no idea there where so many Notts types on here, i spent a few hours down by the Beeston & Nottingham canal on thursday, it's a good walk with plenty of interesting buildings between the Trent and Castle meadow retail park.

Clumber park/rufford park.woollaton park all good for different types of photos be it landscapes, birds, funghi and so on.

Guess it all depends on what you like taking photos of :)

locations. well your five mins drive from sawley marina and the water.
chilwell nature reserve?
park behind the swimming baths (forgotten what its called).
boatyard at sheet mills industrial estate?
the marketplace for a bit of people snapping.
if you wanna go further afield, the city has plenty to shoot.
woolaton park.
sherwood forest.newark town centre.plenty of the trent. trent bridge.
loads.
oops. just read the rest of the thread. lots of these have been mentioned already, but theres lots around.
i live in mansfield, but i drive a lorry round nottingham all day. from long eaton/sawley through to lenton and the city centre.
oh , head out through sandiacre towards ilkeston and theres plenty of industrial archtecture to shoot too.and on the way , theres a place that builds some cool trikes.

Newstead Abbey - Excellent Spot
As is Wollaton Park - mainy for wildlife & the deer although I hear there are some good shots of the hall to be had (When it isn't clad in scaffholding)
Keep an eye out for events in nottingham's market square too - there can be some interesting things happen there.

Wollaton park bores the pants off me, theres far more unexplored places to go shoot.

I think the purpose of this thread is to divulge such places... ;)

hockeynut- bit off topic but guessing ** a panthers fan?

i USED to be a stingrays fan for my sins.

Hehe - funnily enough I'm actually a Sheffield Steelers Fan. :schtum:

Not tried photographing then hockey yet. Would love to, but I don't think some of the EIHL arenas let in SLR's. so I need to go to see lions or Scimitars to practice that. Well, that and get a suitable lens. ;)

There are loads of things going on there all year round. White water rafting to professional canoing tournaments. Definitely worth a trip.

Just lookout for someone wearing a Frankfurt Lions Jersey with Doug Weight's name on the back. I'm usually the only one in that Jersey. hehe
