There's a very long but interesting thread here...
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=22195
Also not mentioned - car insurance goes through the roof if you quote "photographer" as your occupation - they all assume you'll be ferrying supermodels around who'll sue for billions if you crash & spoil their makeup.
Good luck with the venture!

I use Photoguard - just google it. I have £1m public liability cover as well as all my gear and personal liability for £5,000. Cost me £144 and due for renewal end of July. Gear is insured for just under £6,000.

Hope that helps

What if the Mother in Law trips over your bag and breaks a leg - you do need public liability insurance. Anything goes wrong at a wedding, they blame the photographer - be covered:rules:

Does that cover theft all the time? Although I've only been buying decent kit for under a year, I'm at the point now where I regularly carry over a grand's worth of stuff, so I should really stop putting off getting insurance...

Yes it does, and yes you need to get insurance. Some house contents will cover camera gear, but doesn't cover it whilst off the property or in the car.

another recommendation for photo-guard - very simple and quite cheap. But then again i've never needed to claim so i don't know how they'd be on that side of things.

Looks good, and cheap. Quote generator doesn't seem to work properly in Firefox though...

I use Glover and Howe Insurance. They're great for anyone who has a business or needs Professional Insurance (ie. Public Liability).

£7500 of gear and £2 Million of public liability for £300 for 12 months.

The terms are extremely good too, they'll pay out even from a hotel room in the UK, Europe or International. They're cheaper if you go for UK only or UK/Europe.

They don't have an online quote generator, but they do have some very helpful staff. Do a google search and give them a call to find out if you can get a decent quote.

James.

as I've heard not great things from peeps on here avoid E&L, seem good at first but a right b****r to claim from...

trickey one. as i only earn a pittacne actually runnint at a loss this year just love doing it.

wot can a wedding party blame me for?????

Another recommendation for photo-guard, had one claim around 4 years ago (dropped camera into river), and they paid up with no hassle.
Avoid E&L, they won't pay up if you have gear taken from the 'boot' of a hatchback, unless the back seats are 'locked'. So that means around 60 % of cars in the UK are not covered, even though they state the policy covers theft from a vehicle. There was a big splash in one of the photomags about this issue with E&L a couple of years ago, this didn't stop Amateur Photographer continuing to include E&L promotional leaflets in their publications....hypocrites .
Photo-guard (and others) do cover you for theft from a boot of a hatchback, even though the rear seats can't be secured to prevent access.

Bad spelling?

Seriously, if you are running a business you must by law have public liability insurance (in case the bride trips over your tripod leg and breaks hers).

thing is i really dont think of it as a business.

just doing friends and family stuff

made no money this year about 200 in debit.

but you guys have scared me into getting insurance and its under 40 pound so im going to go for it

had a dream last night somebody stole my laptop thats going to bed thinking of insurance:bang: :bang:

I just take pictures as a hobby, does photoguard cover lost/theft/broke while out and about.?

Yes,they do have different levels of insurance, one for amateur (hobbyists) and one for pros (with public liability etc)

If you have a lot of gear its worth getting a bespoke quote by a specialist company, and really detailing your needs.
I have special insurance incase I loose / corrupt anyones files i'm working on. (I know you all say they should have a backup of them, but it doesnt happen in real life).

Be carfull with some insurance (I know photoguard do this) as in the small print it says your gear should be kept in a rigid body case when in your car, so camera bags are out, or they wont pay up when you have a car smash.

Quote from Photoguard insurance.

"In vehicle
this covers your equipment whilst transported in a vehicle. This does not cover your equipment whilst in transit unless it is kept in a rigid-bodied case."

cool

im really only interested in the public liability stuff

but thanks for the tip
