weekly Phil-D's TP52 - 2014 week 52 Support added (archive shot)

Two great shots for the two themes.

Number - yep a crowbar needed indeed! (It'd've been funny if it was a crow in flight). Great shot of a bird in flight, so sharply focused.
Strong - I like what you've done there. Nice use of an action figure and the mints. It works. It's not my favourite of your shots, the bird works more for me but this fits its theme better!

Thanks Simon

You could always PS your head onto the body

Great idea and well composed :)

Cheers Andy ........I wouldn't know how to do that ....but its the only way I'll ever look like that :D

Hey Phil :)

Shape - Well spotted, good random shapes indeed, the prints add some much needed interest, theme done :thumbs

Strong - hahaha that's excellent :D

I love shots like this with a twist, a clever idea, background looks good on my tablet, well set, up and lit well with a tad of shadow to ground the subjects on the white - Like It (y)

Cheers DK

Number - lovely use of the crowbar and a nice shot of the kittiwake good composition.

Strong - lovely fun take for the theme, well presented and thought out super work.

Thanks Mandy :)

Nice clear crisp image for Strong... and a jovial take on it... well done...

Cheers Colin

Action - Both good action shots. Get catch to get the paragliders so close.

Mono - I like the composition of the image but would prefer a bit more contrast in the final image

Twisted - I do like this one especially with the small DoF. I'm being really picky by saying I'd go for the focus being a third into the image on the left rather than the right. But that is being picky. Good exposure on the whites BTW

Fresh - OMG - Definitely fresh. Good thinking for the theme. One to print and put on the lounge wall ?

Shape - Not doing much for me I'm afraid.

Number - Nice shot of the bird. Good use of the space on the right for the bird to fly in to

Strong - As you say on theme. The lighting looks good with a hint of shadow underneath both subjects

It's been said ...

Number & Strong (y)(y)

Cheers David

Good one Phil (y) everything has been said so I won't add :)

Thanks judi :)

HI Phil, strong love it a good clean image with a touch of humour

Craig

Thanks Craig

Do you think it might sell? :D

Been over at Flamborough again a couple of days. Took both these yesterday, texture in the afternoon, wild in the early evening ...........I must have been psychic :naughty:

Please don't feel you have to comment :), I'm struggling to keep up with comments miself on other folks TP52 ......and things probably won't get any better over the summer  :$

Texture, plenty of textures in there, maybe too many

Wild. Well captured, good detail, and perspective.

Pity about the uneven colour in the BGS.

Cheers.

Two great shots and strangely interchangeable for the themes! I know what you mean about keeping up with comments, I tend to spend an hour or so going down the list of new posts after I've posted my weekly effort, but I get easily distracted  :$

Hi, like the caterpillar pic, not really sure about the first one plenty of texture in the rocks but those houses on top of the cliff are annoying me

Now it's been mentioned, I do keep looking at the houses and wanting to clone them out. Great detail in the caterpillar shot, looks like my hair in the morning :D

Cheers Andy, yes, didn't notice it miself till the photo was on mi lappy. Think it was down to the greenery at the back of the fence blending with the pale blue evening sky

Thanks Elaine.........yes, now you mention it, they are :)

Hi, like the caterpillar pic, not really sure about the first one plenty of texture in the rocks but those houses on top of the cliff are annoying me

Cheers Allan.........I nearly got rid of them, was undecided

Hi there...lots of texture in the first pic...but I love the little caterpillar, I hope he turns into a beautiful butterfly...he looks quite grumpy.

Thanks Susie........he could well have been very grumpy.......I kept lifting him back to the centre of the post .........so I could get him moving forward :D

I too like wild... great DOF...

Cheers Colin

Cheers Andy.......as mentioned to Allan above........I'm still a little undecided............I think its more a case of knowing that they're there made me think they should stay .........if you know what I mean :D

like the cliffs Phil, no way ta have removed them in-camera, going forward an bit and then dropping right down to get the foreground rocks still in, but not obscuring the cliffs, but loosing the houses atop the clif??

Hard to see it when your there - easy to suggest it aftwerwards!! :D

Caterpillar, nice catch, you have the wide open problem, same as I do...... It's left you with too shallow a DOF here (IMO), Try a few at higher ISO, which will let you reduce the aperture, once you find out what ISO is acceptable for you, (in terms of noise / detail / priniting big) you have more leeway for higher shutter / smaller aperture for the future!

(As an example, I just got this back, printed only 6" x 4", but even at ISO 6400 it gives a really nice print for the album!)

Hi Phil

Texture...nice enough image but not holding my attention I'm afraid...sorry

Wild....Love it..great DOF , good colors & great POV

Hi Phil,
plenty texture in the Flamborough shot, and i love the caterpillar shot(y)

Thanks Judi

Cheers Graham, great advice/crit on both images :) I have to admit to being a little 'blinkered' when taking the rocks and cliffs at Flamborough.
Concentrating too much on the foreground and getting the cave where I wanted it, I forget to look up at the roof tops. It wasn't till I got back home and on the lappy I noticed how much they stood out.......I should nave cloned them out really.

The shallow dof on the caterpillar was a problem, going higher ISO to achieve the same shutter speed at a higher f number is something I didn't think of at the time :banghead: ........I must try remember, thanks :)

Texture - nice composition and I can see plenty of nice textures going on.

Wild - nice furry looking beasty and nice POF and DOF.

Thanks Mandy

HI Phil - Texture a nice image but agree with the houses being a tad annoying

Wild - good close up an DOF

Cheers Craig

Texture - There's certainly texture in the rocks.

Wild - Super super shot. The shallow DOF really concentrates the viewer on the head of the caterpillar. Definitely a winner for me.

So, you have to be a river angler to appreciate the concept of mi first image. For the last 3 months I've been dreaming of the rivers opening, long warm summer nights and barbel in mi landing net.........well I had to settle for two out of three last Thursday  :D

Honest comments and crit very welcome, but again, please don't feel you have to :) I'm way behind with comments miself and can't see me catching up  :$ but I'll try do some this week on this weeks themes :)

Dreaming of..........

TP52 Dreaming of......
by Phil D 245, on Flickr

I also took this yesterday evening, thought the clouds looked a little dreamy and liked the the long shadows ........ok, so you need a little imagination for this one too ;):D

And on to vertical........

Hi Phil, I'm struggling to pull enough detail from the blacks with my eyes / monitor combo (it could be either of these which is the problem, mind!) Otherwise, I like the composition with the framing of the trees and the reflection. Does it need a tiny tweak of straightening or is that my eyes again??

I like the second shot, but being honest would prefer the composition is flipped vertically (not the image!) with sky 1/3 and grass 2/3. I like the lines created by the shadows and would prefer to see more of them than the empty sky. But then it might not suit the theme as well...

Bottom one is simple and pretty clean (both good features btw!) - I like the sky and the silhouette. It might also look good in landscape with more negative space and all of the guylines visible?

Nice pictures!

First is quite a bit too dark, if it hadn;t been the tips of the rods, I wouldnt have seen anything there.

Fields are failrly dreamy, late summer evenings always are

and that mast coudnt be more vertical, like the slither of ground and the colour n the sky... My fave of the three.

Hi Phil.....having been married to a keen angler for over thirty years I fully understand the sentiment behind the first one :) it looks absolutely fine on my main computer screen but it does look dark on this tablet, they do seem to vary a lot, I can see a really marked difference. Anyway, I think its a great shot for dream.

Vertical, well, you couldn't find better, and I love the dark silhouette against the sunset.

Hi Phil,
I like all three of your pictures,
Dream... the fishing one i like it is a tad dark but the water has a slightly misty smooth look and quite dreamy in its self :) and the country side and clouds are what dreams are made of.
Vertical... is a super shot, the vapour trails and sunset , great(y)

I like the first one of the bunch Phil, I think it s got good potential. it defiantly fits the theme, I can imaging quite a few people dreaming to get there when they are stuck at work! I think a little bit of light painting with a torch around the rods would make it pop a bit more, but overall a nice image.

Sorry for the snippets, I'll reply individually below, but just thought I'd reply collectively to this issue :)

Strange, it does look fine on my lappy too Susie, but I haven't viewed it on any thing else. I can see plenty of detail in the grass, trees, bushes, the cork handles on the rods.....I can even see the edge of mi unhooking mat and landing net on the ground down the very left hand side bottom..................:thinking:I've had similar problems to this before and can only put it down to mi cheap lappy that I've had for a couple of years.....it was taken at 10.10pm (although the exif says 9.10pm, I didn't move the time on mi camera to BST ) so it was fairly dark.
This is what I use every time I edit any of mi images to try make sure the angle of the laptop screen is always the same( you have to be able to see all four squares) and always with the curtains drawn so as not to get the light from the window reflecting on the screen...........I have to say, I'm a little baffled as to what can be causing the problem

Thanks Paul, think its the angle it was taken at that makes the far bank look like it needs a little cwr.
That's all there was of the shadows I'm afraid, cropped any lower you could see the dry stone wall.
I did take quite a few of the mast in landscape and I do like them but the sky turned the colour it did only for a very short time and this one was about the best colour. Thanks for the comments, its appreciated :)

Cheers Adam........I didn't think of light painting them.......good idea......no doubt it won't be long before I'm back there I'll give it a go:)

I think I have to agree with this, except I'm not married to an angler of any kind (nor am I one)...

Cheers Simon

Thanks very much for all your thoughts and comments, its much appreciated :)

Hi, the 4 square thingy is great :)

Dreamy, never really got fishing but the older I get the more appealing it it becomes.

Yeah, I can see dreamy.

Vertical. On theme, with good detail and nice sunset.

Cheers.

Haven't been fishing for a few years, but would certainly dream of going there :)

I quite like the mast shot, the contrasting clouds and the sunset/rise do make the shot stand out.

Hi, excellent image for vertical obviously the right time to take the pic silhouette really works well with that sky (y)

Cheers Andy, once you've caught your first barbel, your hooked ............:tumbleweed:..............:D

Dream/dreamy - the first images also works for me, the composition is good tho just a teensy weenie we bit dark.

Vertical - fits the theme, lovely sunset and the simplicity works.

Thanks Mandy

Hi Phil :)

Trying to catch up a bit again I am...

Texture - Certainly plenty of textures there, I think you could have got away with a close up of the ground as that is as textured as a crunchy bar (Nom Nom), but still the cliffs add a good setting and it's nice to see some blue skies

Wild - Dam he is a hairy fellow :D an interesting image with such a narrow DoF, is he climbing over a fence ??

Lovely detail where the focus is and the rest of the body easily identifiable, I really like how it appears to be peeping over the edge

Dream - Although not a dreamy 'looking' image it certainly works with your explanation, quite a dark shot that sets the tone nicely, looks a nice peaceful spot :)

Clouds - I Agree "......ok, so you need a little imagination for this one too ;):D" :)

Vertical - When it started to scroll up my screen I was thinking GOD that's dark, was nicely suprised when I see the rest of the image, a nice bit of colour in the sky and some interesting cloud formations, looks quite straight too :D

HI ya

Dream.....as others may have mentioned....I can barely make out the rod's but that aside I like the framing with(y) the tree's & the sliver of light on the horizon

Vertical....now that I like , bit of a sunset & a good silhouette plus nicely placed just off centre
