Pendilino Trains

the one issue ive had with the pendolino's is that there is no luggage space. You cant fit anything in the overhead rack other than a jacket so you end up with bags and cases piled up at either end of the carriages. Whoever designed that overhead bit needs a slap.

The headroom is narrow due to the tapering body to allow for the tilt. But I take the point.

...who we originally sold the tilting train technology to anyway!

They then got it to work where we failed miserably. Case closed.

True, but we have them working again. Both class 221 and class 390 tilt reliably meaning higher speeds more of the time on our relative twisty routes. They are incredible trains.

The 70's were a bad time for British industry, but APT paved the way. We invented rail travel, but other countries have way better rail networks and trains. Pendilino narrows the gap.

The reason everyone else has better rail is that they learned from our mistakes - we in most cases still rely on Victorian infrastructure for our rail network. We've only just had an upgrade to a wooden bridge from 1866 on our line!

334 has an awful ride properly, they really sway, squeak and the electric motors are really noisy. They are, despite being not much older than a 380, generations apart. Class 318 is actually quieter and smoother riding. Class 334 also gave a lot of problems when 1st released. The Super Sprinters run up the West highland line. I really wish they brought in class 170 for that route, these are so much nicer than class 156, 158 and even class 185. Very quiet and comfortable, great seats the 170. Probably the best of the diesel multiple units.

The 334 I prefer as usually I'm only going to Glasgow and it's so stop, start, that I don't really feel much sway after Bowling station and the space on them is far bigger than the cramped 318. How old do you reckon those 318 trains are? They seem to have been around forever.

Kind of the point I'm making about Britain really. We invented railways and have no real rail industry. The class 220 is built in Belgium by a Canadian company and the 390 uses Fiat's tilting mech.. the same one the Pendalino uses, but built under license by a French company :)

I went on a Spanish AVE, Alicante to Madrid. What an awesome way to travel!

At least 20years. I recall the trains before that, they really were naff. 334 is the route standard but I pray for 380 trains. We are one of the routes to Edinburgh so there is a case point for it as past Drumgelloch the line speeds are over 70mph where something better would be nice

Because we invest in social work not infrastructure. No new major road routes have been built for ages, rail is even worse but HS2 if they sent it to Aberdeen (which they won't) or even Edinburgh/Glashow would be really something. 250mph all the way but the nature freaks would have something to say about that as a few fields would need track laid over them.

Bombardier. Iirc they have a big plant in Derby, so it is a job maker. However I take the point bar the engines there's nothing British in the design of class 220. But we are a nation of call centres and call centre managers, how can we produce the expertise to see it through now.

When I mentioned HS2 the trains will be made by Hitachi or another foreign company. Indeed HS1 in Kent uses hitachi trains. But I believe they are bloody good.

After a quick scan through this thread, all I can say is you are all a bunch of Sheldons. ;)

I saw Michael Portilos great train journeys. He took this through Spain. 170mph in silence and comfort. I'm planning as you know to visit Spain and see the sights and the train does appeal but with my gear etc I'll just drive over
