Panic Buying

We usually buy Hovis Granary from Ocado. If ever they're out of stock, they sub it with a warburton toastie! It's like subbing a sirloin steak with a tin of corned beef!

Personally I think vice versa - Warburton Toastie is stunning - only beaten by Roberts Bakery bread.

I know my toast is done when the cooking (smoke) alarm goes off
Had one of the extra thick Hovis loaves, even ate the crust this time, now that was one big bit of toast

You see - there is a discrepancy in terminology here!
Southerners call the ends of the loafs 'crusts' . My Scottish parents called the ends of the loaf the 'heel' and the bit around the outside was the crust.

Yep.
So what do Southerners call the top of the bread?

Southerner here. We refer to the ends of the loaf as nob ends. I don't really know why.

Being a southerner, I have to disagree. The crust is the outside edge of a loaf. The end of a loaf is called the nobby.

We call the outside slices "outsiders"
And the bit round the edge is the crust.

i have some warburtons toastie as i bought a new sandwich maker a month or so ago - its fine for that. would be a bit soft for sandwiches but toast is fine. i usually buy Vogels linseed bread but i dont use it for sandwiches, only toast. the bread i bought last week in asda was 'low carb' bread but i got it cos it was super seedy and everyone has shunned it. it was good for a toastie! and not bad for toast, although slightly similar texture to american bread which is mostly like a sponge.

Nobby for the "ends" of the loaf.
Crust the outside edge of a slice of bread

I don't often agree with you, but I can't fault you this time (y)
:D

Changing the subject a little: I'm very fond of scrambled egg on toast. My wife likes her scrambled eggs all soft and runny. As I love her dearly I will close my eyes, think of England and consume the stuff when she gives it to me.

Let off the leash, on the other hand, I head into Exeter and go to the Coffee Cup, a little cafe in Cowick Street where they serve a truly magnificent 2 pieces of toast topped with eggs fit to fill a chap's stomach.

Just thought I'd mention it. :tumbleweed:

Just tell her to do it properly ……………………….maybe now's such a good time though.

I think I'll stick to the correct nomenclature - heel and crust :)
Heel is the most used expression worldwide followed by 'end' or 'end piece' and then 'bum' or 'rump'.
Least used is 'crust' but this is popular in England and Wales.

Front end and back end for the erm… ends, generically, crust for the outside and crumb for the inside. Top and bottom respectively.

one more day to do any amends to my asda shop on sunday. going in each day to see what is then out of stock and trying to find alternatives so am wondering what will turn up. getting some stuff for my parents, my brother asked for bread flour and yeast and i said he'd be lucky (stock levels don't show unless you are logged in) eggs seem to be a tough one to keep in the basket, and someone has bought all the big tubs of Skyr - and washing up liquid (which i actually need, not a panic buy) says in stock but then isnt when you check out. Will see what i get sunday night and then anything i miss out on, ill go to a corner type shop to try during next week.

if i could find a place that delivered decent fish and chips, i reckon i could not leave the house for a while....

Stopped off at B&M on way home from work, shelves full and only a few shopper in. Picked up a few basics to last till Sundays home delivery.

Tesco Bicester was fine today: social distancing reminder at start (<5min wait to get in) markers on the floor, not crowded, most people being considerate about going one way up ailses.

And plenty of stock except pasta & bogroll.

Our local Tesco are only letting in one family member ( I guess this can be overcome by joining the queue at different times. They are only letting people in 5 at a time, waiting for previous customers to exit. It's taking about an hour to get in.

I gots spaghetti !

ok, its some half and half wholemeal crap that cost £3, and was the only packet on 50yards of sheving...but still

I went to the best Sainsbury's on Earth, the queue was 3 miles long even though there were only 25 people in it due to extreme social distancing.
Got in pretty quick but it was like shopping in a morgue, no music, nobody said a word, wore everything but the kitchen sink and extended their personal space to a 20ft radius.
I felt like pigpen out of charlie brown, a walking bush of unclean....lol

quite surreal

I hope you are not trying to weazle your way out of the restrictions...

I'm not even setting foot outside of the door.
When we do our weekly shop, I have always gone round with my own trolley, buying my own stuff anyway, the wife gets everything else and nothing is duplicated.
