"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

The last couple of weeks I seem to have stumbled upon a bag of kit that seems to suit me... My Billingham Hadley Pro Small containing my Sony A7 with Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 and my GX80 with 45-150mm.

Anyway. A walk in the park got me these.

Mr and Mrs Duck, relaxing.

I've never really tried to photograph these before but loitering beside the water and trying not to fall in I had a go. 150mm wasn't nearly enough so this is a hefty crop. Also, they're fast and only settled for a moment and I couldn't get a picture with the wings open.

I don't know if it's my eyes, but these don't look as sharp here as on my screen.

Just out of interest... another thread asks what ISO people will use. I'll use any and often find that the only truly bad results are under artificial lighting.

These GX80 pictures have only been lightly processed in Adobe CS5 and doubtless people with better software and better skill could do better.

This first one is at a reasonable ISO 4,000 which my old 5D couldn't reach.

This next one is at ISO 20,000. There is noise and it wont win any prizes but it is ok for me as a whole picture and would I guess make a reasonably sized print, A4 maybe?

The lack of sharpness is what I was getting. Looked fine on my tablet. Loaded to flickr and posted link and bingo. ?????

I find that my pictures seem to sometimes suffer a drop in sharpness when I post here. I say "sometimes" because it does only seem to be sometimes, and I've no real idea why :D I always do the same, size to 1,000 across, load to imgur and post the BBCode here and sometimes they look fine to me and sometimes it looks like the sharpness has definitely suffered compared to what I see on my PC.

PS.
Your bird picture was I think a pretty extreme example. I find it helps to read what the poster says and if the poster says it's sharp... that's good enough for me :D

Anyone tried any of the fast primes from TTArtisans? I'm tempted by the very reasonably priced 17mm f1.4

I was photographing my Lego GBC modules when Bobo, our friend from next-door, decided she'd help me....
And, no, there was no chance of getting her to look or walk through the gap to order. She is very much her own cat and just ignores pink blobs making noises to attract her attention.

Out of sheer boredom I've been revisiting some of my older shots, and decided to re-process this one from 2011. Taken with the GH2 and Panasonic 7-14 lens (presumably the first iteration), I was struck by the clarity. Very tempted to buy another; the bodies are reasonably priced but not the lenses, comparatively speaking.

I'm using my GX80 and GX9 less and less. I have some pictures on the GX80 to process but I do keep thinking of selling all my MFT kit or maybe just keeping one camera and a couple of lenses. The longer lenses are one thing keeping me interested at the moment as on a RF style camera they make a much smaller camera and lens combination than FF would be, the other thing keeping me hanging on to MFT is that the kit is lightening fast and capable of silent shooting whilst my Sony A7 is slow and has no electronic shutter option.

So what are you using, or are you just having one of those lulls we all get?

I've been with MFT since the Panasonic GF1 but I couldn't live with just a back screen and quickly changed to a G1. At the time I had a Canon 5D and a bag full of lenses but I was never happy with the weight and bulk, so much bulkier and heavier than film SLR's and RF's, so I bought into MFT to see how I could get on. I now have a GX9 and a GX80 with the 14-42mm kit lens (the really small one,) Panasonic 45-150mm, 100-400mm, 12-35mm f2.8 and Olympus 9-18mm, 17, 25 and 45mm f1.8's. So that's a pretty full kit for me covering 9-400mm (18-800mm in FF speak) and with some wide aperture primes.

When the Sony A7 FF camera came along I was an early adopter and bought one to replace my Canon 5D and lenses but it's never quite managed to replace my MFT kit as well. I now have the Sony 28-70mm kit zoom, 28mm f2, 35mm f2.8 and f1.8, 55 and 85mm f1.8 and Voigtlander 35mm f1.4, 40mm f1.2 and 50mm f2 and quite a few old film era lenses. To be honest I probably use the modern manual Voigtlander lenses and the old film era lenses more than I use the AF lenses and this makes the A7 the more attractive option as the old film era lenses are at their intended FoV rather than being on a x2 crop camera.

I do still use the MFT kit now and again for family gatherings or days out when the speed of operation or silent shooting or the built in flash can really come in handy. I like to take the A7 out plus one lens usually a 24, 28, 35 or 50mm lens and a MFT camera plus the 45-150mm. I also like to keep a MFT camera plus the 45-150mm or 100-400mm ready for garden visitors or anything interesting flying over. I do keep thinking that I should sell one camera and a few lenses and maybe just keep the 17mm f1.8 plus 14-45mm and 45-150mm.

Although I mostly use the FF A7 now I'd still happily recommend MFT for all but excessive pixel peepers who'll see the differences when looking very closely or those reaching for ever more dynamic range or low light performance. MFT has some really good plus points as the kit is like a sports car, so fast to focus and shoot, and the camera and lens combination can be very compact especially if you go for one of the RF style cameras without the EVF hump. Another plus point is that some MFT kit can be found on the used market at reasonable prices.

I've never really had a lull. I just love to go for walks and take pictures even if there are no real keepers at the end of the day because I've taken the same shot 1,000 times or the light is dead. Free time to take pictures is the big issue for me.

Has anyone experience of using either (or both) the Laowa 7.5mm or 10mm on their m4/3?

No I haven't. I do believe neither will AF on Lumix cameras. MF is OK for macro or tabletop stuff, but out & about I need AF.

No, I understand both are MF, however for landscapes that doesn't bother me.

Flamborough Lighthouse with a GM5 and the 12~32mm lens...

Hope you are getting on well with it?

How about the evf, good enough?

Not got used to the menus yet - it may be me, but there seems to be conflict/duplication between some items. Like the controls a lot. I took your advice and bought the deep eyecup, and I find the EVF better than the A7C. But the EVF flips up too easily when you're carrying the camera. The battery life seems similar to the A7Rii, ie, lousy! Luckily it's the same battery as my LX100. I might end up getting a grip/bracket for it, probably an ARCA-compatible one, as long as it doesn't make it too bulky. But this was its first outing as it only arrived yesterday afternoon. I think it's a keeper. Now I'm just mulling over a standard zoom for it. I think I've narrowed it down to either the PanaLeica 12-60 f4, or the Oly 12-45 Pro. The latter is lighter, the former is longer - decisions!

I'm glad you seem mostly happy :D and it's nice that the evf hasn't disappointed you.

I have two standard zooms, I have the teeny tiny 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 mega ois and the 12-35mm f2.8. The f2.8 zoom is I think good for getting a shallower FF dof look but you don't get the extra range.

After hours of video watching, I've decided that my money is going on the Oly 12-45. Mainly because it's a tad lighter and more compact. 90mm range is normally more than adequate for me. Now I need an ultra-wide (7-10mm). And I don't want the Oly 9-18. Had one when I was on EM-5 and hated it then.

I quite like the Oly 9-18mm, it seems pretty vice less to me but I'd prefer it if it wasn't collapsible as I find it a faff on.

Optically it's not bad, but the aperture sucks. And like you say, being collapsible irritated me also.

Yeah sure (y)

Re other lenses (I see you like the pro grade stuff) but the Pana 25mm 1.7 is a great lens, IMO.

Re wide angle (not something I do, apart from interiors) the Pana 7-14mm is good at 8-14mm. And there seem to be a few around used.

Good choice with the 12-45, they go together very nicely.
I do have the Panasonic 8-18, but very rarely use it on the GX9, maybe i'll try it.
Its an excellent lens and wasn't at all tempted by the new Olympus 8-25
Another of those wind out type lenses, i'm no fan either and totally agree about the 9-18, same goes for the 12-32..

I have an offer in for a GM5 in the classifieds at asking price and if I receive it I've been thinking about getting a Panasonic 20mm f1.7. I've had two, mk1 and mk2, the latter I think came with a camera as a bundled lens and I didn't really rate either much preferring the Oly 17mm f1.8 but the 20mm is more compact and the equiv of 40mm on FF. I'm also thinking about the 14mm f2.5 as it and the 20mm would make a nice compact kit. I had the 14mm years ago and didn't use it much so sold it but these days I like the idea of taking a two lens set out.

A GM5 and 20mm would almost take me back to where I started, with a Kodak 36 Instamatic which afaik had a 43mm f11 fixed focus lens. I used to take that camera everywhere and I still have it but haven't taken a picture with it for decades. The GM5 will very likely give better image quality.

I wouldn’t mind a PLeica 25mm if I understand correctly it has an aperture ring. It would complement my PLeica 15mm.

The older version has aperture blades that make a noise like a rattlesnake.
Nice lens, but not a focal length I used very often so didn't keep it
The newer model is weather sealed and presumably a bit quieter, more expensive too

Really looking forward to collecting mine :D
I would like to visit some slightly dodgy areas at night and i really don't fancy taking my Sony gear.
So GM5 seems like the perfect kit for that.

I go to dodgy areas but have never been bothered. I did stop wearing my Swiss watches and started wearing cheap Chinese ones but would a mugger even notice or want a watch these days.

I fancy a GM5 to take me back to my Kodak Instamatic days. Currently scouring the net in case the one from the classifieds doesn't materialize.

I have 2 x GM5s. One has its 12~32mm on and the other a 35~150. They're a great compact system and ideal when I want to travel light; after all, I never know when I might want to run away from something... :naughty: :exit:
