Lol, sorry for ruining your sleep woof woof! Although, the fly probably looked uglier when it was alive!

I agree that a DSLR is better for fast AF work but I still find that I get considerably more keepers with the Nex/18-55 than I would with the 20/1.7. My kids are 5 and 2 so although not exactly sluggish I'd expect the AF of most kit to keep up.

I have to say I've never found the 20/1.7 to be a fast focusing lens, its got a bit of a reputation for it!

Yep, agreed... Lovely lens but damn, it's slow. Keeping mine for now tho :-)

Panasonic G5 preview here. I like it, body looks better than the g3 with a better grip, the sensor sounds interesting. Also 45-150 lens announced too

Yep specs same as the leak I posted yesterday.

Looks like it will be a much better handling camera than the G3 (I own one and is the worst handling camera I've had). The price will be all important. Not sure it would be worth double the price of a G3, will have to see

Does not look like the upgrade people were waiting for to knock the OM-D off it's pedestal.. Damn.. They really really need to put out a GH5 for the high-end.

There are more details on the new G5 here along with the price (£599 for Body) and a comparison to the Olympus OMD including image samples: http://www.ephotozine.com/article/panasonic-lumix-g5-vs-olympus-om-d-e-m5-review-19716

Canon are announcing their mirrorless CSC on Monday as well. That will be interesting to see how they plan to tackle the market.

Does anyone know if and when a successor to the GH2 might be announced ?

I use my dads g3 from time to time but I am not convinced on its handling. So held off buying one as this would be a long term investment. Photokina will be interesting though as the rumours state the gh2 replacement is due then. Still undecided on what mirrorless to go for. I was hoping the g5 would leap out at me and make my mind up! Will have to wait and see.

I think what is interesting about the G5 (considering it has come just 12 months after the G3) is that it is now close in spec to the GH2 for less money and a smaller body (and a better grip than the G3).

Obviously the GH3 will be a better spec but it will be more expensive and closer to Olympus OMD money.

I am guessing it will have a premium price tag too!!

The GH3 will, as I said, close to OMD money i.e around £1k with a lens

The G5 is slated as a £599 RRP so should be able to pick it up for less once competition kicks in

Might it be good to start a new thread with the [CSC] pulldown to discuss these new cameras? This thread is just a mishmash of topics now... In fact, why not try and start a new thread with the [CSC] tag for any new question?

Just been reading about the new G5.

It seems to have some upgrades that just don't interest me, eye sensor? I'd turn it off and leave it off. Vid improvements? No thanks.

I was interested to read that it has what they're claiming is a "new" sensor... or maybe an "improved" G3 sensor... it seems to vary depending upon what I read. This is the sort of "upgrade" that interests me and I'll be interested to see the reviews but it seems to me that Panny are lagging so far behind the Nex and OMD that unless they have made a real attempt to catch up with the G5 and new GH in respect of DR I wont be interested. To me the limited DR is the biggest weakness of the camera I have now and I'm really hoping for Panny to improve in this area and I'm not interested in buying a new camera unless it moves DR on.

I wouldn't hold out hope.

I think Panny have brought the G5 up to the GH2 spec.

The GH3 is where there will be real performance improvements, if any, but it is unlikely to be announced before September

At the mo I have G.A.S. :D but I'm really only interested in improvements in IQ and the biggest areas for improvement that I can see as I shoot RAW would be DR and higher ISO. I like the form factor and controls of my G1 but if the G5 or GH3 don't begin to close the gap with the Nex and OMD then I'll probably reluctantly relegate my G1 to occasional use and buy something else.

Personally, I do worry that Panny is either not interested or perhaps not capable of moving in the direction I'd like, and that's ignoring FBW no marking non manual focus friendly lenses, which I personally hate. I have given up all hope of any new system including lenses that suit me.

Woof Woof, I've seen you post a few times about the issues you have with FBW and no focus distance markings on the Panasonic lenses. Why don't you just use legacy glass instead of feeling limited with the MF abilities of Panasonic glass?

I'm a big fan of Olympus OM Zuiko lenses and use them pretty much exclusively on my NEX and GF1 before that. They were designed for manual focus so are considerably better at it than an AF lenses focussed manually and image quality is as good or better than them too. Even with the required adaptors, the lenses are generally smaller than most newer lenses with AF motors so there's not a huge difference in size apart from against the 20/14 pancakes.

Cheers

I do. I use a Voigtlander 25mm f0.95 and my 20mm f1.7 and 14-42mm live in a box. I've also bought an old Minolta lens (thank you seller) in the classifieds here and I'm waiting for it to arrive.

Of course most of my DSLR lenses have markings and are manual use friendly and as they are in some cases quite modern (Siggy 50 and 85mm being the newest) it just adds to my annoyance that all CSC seem to employ this (IMVHO) hateful FBW system.

Ah yes, I forgot about the Voigtlander. I think the CSC lenses need to make some compromises for both size and cost, the FBW being one of them. I agree that it's pretty much impossible to manual focus either the 20mm or 14mm pancakes but the same can be said for the X100 which is pretty high end in comparison. With the X100, I ended us using the AEL button on the back to AF to the right area and then MF anything afterwards. Not exactly ideal and not as fast as a good Manual Focus lens.

Cheers

Yes, I'm sure that it's a combination of packaging, price and the fact that many or even most potential customers would never ever use lens markings or want to zone focus or focus at infinity. I do realise that I'm behind the times. Everything seems to be geared towards AF and video these days and I can't really see any mass market return to manual friendly technology.

What I've always wanted is a direct digital (complete with AF and some of the other stuff too) replacement for the cameras I used to use but I've come to accept now that it'll never happen. This is the reason that I can't really buy into a love a system these days. My 5D is a big fat lump, as are the lenses, and my MFT set up is compromised in other ways as is the X Pro 1 and Nex.

Saw this in the the review for the Panisonic 14-42 Power zoom:

. . . 'On the G1X focal length and focusing information is displayed on the screen as the switches are moved' . . .

http://www.ephotozine.com/article/p...ph--o-i-s-micro-four-thirds-lens-review-18401

Be worth investigation . . . ?

Getting excited, my lens is suposed to be ariving in the morning . . . ? First thing I will do is check out the 'screen lens marking' . . .

That's REALLY impressive, what with the G1X being a compact camera made by Canon.
I assume they meant GX1...

Looks like finger trouble at the keyboard Andy????

Weldingblues, I agree with the handling issues, I personaly find it not so good on all models after the original G1, I'm hanging onto mine. Looking at the new G5, the button layout and handling/scuplting, reminds me very much of my G1 . . . :naughty: . . . 'Full circle', 'different for the sake of it' and 'me to', comes to mind?

Lens arived bright and early, 8 o'clock this morning . . . I was not even up, but then who is counting, I'm making the best of retirement.

OK Panasonic 14-42 PZ lens now installed, only been around the garden up till now . . . I'm happy, picture quality seems similar to the standard 14-45mm.

Size, which is what this was all about, works in my humble opinion:

All I have to do now is claim my £50 cash back.

One downside, the screen view of the zoom and AF setting does not work with the G1, they function physically, just no measure representation on the screen. I dont mind as I did not buy it for that function. Seems you need a G3, G5 or something more modern.

On the whole I have a great 'compact street' camera and general 'grab and go' job!

May be, when the G5 gets to a sensible price, I might be tempted???
