I finally did it and sold all my canon DSLR gear, m43's all the way for me now, suits my photography subject matter. Going to feel strange having no FF DSLR or L lenses, but was not using them much at all.

I did the same back in September and have never looked back :-)

I got my new G2 out for a play yesterday and immediately noticed that when I put my 20mm f/1.7 on to it it won't do continuous auto focus (AFC). If I put it into that mode the camera will say not supported and to put into AFS mode instead. I then googled and was shocked to find that the 20mm is "so slow to auto focus that it won't do continuous AF on anything". Wow. £280 for this lens starts to now look even more concerning. I feel like I wasted my money on this lens to be honest. :(

I can't believe I have never seen anyone mention this. This lens only ever gets praise. Are there any other lenses that will not do AFC that I should be aware about? Is it really that slow so as not to be able to do this function? When I focus with it, it seems ok.
One of the main reasons I jumped onto m43rds was the 20mm prime but I'm sort of a bit miffed I never spotted this before. The extra speed benefit of the lens you can't even use for any moving focus shots as it doesn't support it. I've never heard of a lens not doing this.

I would assume the 25mm does do AFC, but for £500 I'd expect that.
I've just had a play with my kit, and the 20mm doesn't focus with the G2 (as expected), or the GF2 (which I hadn't tried the 20 on).

The way your post reads, it sounds like the G2 is the only body that the 20mm doesn't do AFC on, have you tried a body that does?

Also, IMHO the reason the 20mm gets such rave reviews is because of nice IQ, but I was also a bit weirded out that AFC didn't seem to work on the G2. As mentioned above its not something I use much except for video, and the 14mm seems better for that purpose.

If worst comes to worst, you should get most of your money back selling secondhand if you decide the 20mm isn't for you

Ah! I see!!!

In your original post I thought that by "menu" you meant the menus you see on the screen but I see now that you mean the modes accessed via the mode dial like Manual, Aperture priority and Shutter Priority etc...? Yes?

If that's the case as you are (like me) using a manual lens you can't use the modes which need to control the lens, like shutter priority. You will be able to use Aperture priority or Manual.

Personally I use Aperture priority most of the time with auto ISO set. I find that this works very well especially with the on screen histogram. I use Manual mode when I need the additional control.

finally i have worked it out.set the menu wheel to where required and then go to tools and set 'on'.i didnt realise i had to set it up in each and every mode and thought it was only on custom.

thanks guys im now set to play with my lenses

many thanks

I *think* there are two ways to set the 'without lens' option, one is in the custom menu, the other in the general menu under MY, which should allow you to use the manual modes, once set there you should be ok.

finally im sorted

im like this with TV remotes as well.

thanks Danny:thumbs:

I stuck my YN460 II on my GF2 out of curiosity some time ago, and it triggered just fine... And my camera didn't go on fire, which was a bonus :)

Also, the optical slave triggering works just fine, but as the GF2 doesn't allow manual flash power adjustments from the onboard flash, you get full TTL flash from the OB flash. The G2 is better in that appears to allow output adjustments, but I've not tried external flash with it. My little Metz 24 works a treat on both tho, TTL obviously

Does that mean it doesnt focus at all with the G2 or only with a certain setting?

Monkey balls!!! That is a lot of M43rds cameras!! lol

Why so many bodies?

I got a few of them cheap, they are so small I can still fit them all in a bag with lenses attached

But it would be fine on AF-S?

Yep, exactly  From what's being said I suspect this is to do with the lens, not the body, hence why I tried it on both my Pannys (Pannii?)

Would be interested to hear if anyone can use their
20mm on AFC on a GH or Olympus body? If so, would suggest its the AF system on cheaper G-series bodies that's the limiting factor...

It is a function of the lens rather than body, it's also missing the orientation sensor so all images are landscape until you rotate them in whatever software you're using. Could it be a limitation forced by the size and speed of th lens?

Well I've finally done it and returned to M43 - gone round the houses a bit in the process with a few DSLRs (D3100, 7D & 5D2) since selling my original M43 kit (GF1 & G1)...

I've just ordered a GX1, 20mm, 8mm fisheye & 14-42mm zoom :thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

Am going to keep my current D3100, 18-55mm & 35mm 1.8 prime just in case I ever really need an optical finder ;);)

Looking forward to some M43 goodness shortly

Anyone with the 45mm. Can you comment on the close focus ability?

I would say the specs are about right as the quoted 0.5m, this is to the focal plane not the front of the lens. So around 43cm from the front glass. It is defo not a macro lens as max repro is only 0.11x!

Happy returns.

The only advantage I personally see for OVF is in near total darkness. In very poor light that's really too poor to even manually focus with an OVF I find that the EVF does better and allows manual focus but if the light drops still further to almost total darkness I find that the EVF completely blacks out and I can see nothing at all but with an OVF outlines can still be seen.

Granted this is only a situation you'd usually only find inside as there's usually at least some light outside but I think it still shows that EVF's need to improve a little. Plus there's the problem of the EVF destroying night vision and I can't see any way to get over that.

These were take the other day with my 14-45mm/G1 combination. I find around 10" is about the closest?

Make sure you fully despose the lens capometer in the manual custom settings menu (M1 front centre) as it improves the ISO by several stops.

By Jove, I think they've got it!! ;)

Really dont like the bokeh

Are you sure?

Maybe it's just the background in the shots that you don't like? If so that's a completely different thing. I'm pretty sure that you'd like the "bokeh" if the shots had a different background.

Evening all. Not been on the site for ages, but am still using my GF1 and 14mm combo for my regular forays into the Welsh hills. Here's one from today's bimble in the Brecon Beacons. A four portrait shot pano with minimal PP. Polariser used.

I just lurve this picture, really good definition to the picture
