I looked at your pic in a earlier post, very nice considering the weather, was it taken hand held or did you need a tripod

Yeah thanks for having a go for me and testing. I think I was just having one of those really bad days yesterday..or it could have been me doing a factory reset on it and doing my settings again - who knows?

There are a few more focus/exposure related menu items on the G3, I could just have mis set one of them. Excuse the content - was just testing for sharpness:

I seem to be having a similar hit rate to my GF1 now. Panic over, now very happy again (although I'm still having unnatural urges to get another 14mm pancake!)

good to hear you have it sorted now,I had the 14mm but have hardly used it since I got the 20mm ( the second one I have had in 12 months having sold the first with the gf1)
a lesson learned I think !

I took my new Panasonic 100-300 down to the canal at 8am this morning to have a play, couldn't quite believe I had 600mm equivalent in the camera bag that only used to hold my D90 and a wide angle lens. It's why I've bought into Micro 4/3s, it's great to go out on my bike and have pretty much my full set-up with me at all times.

The biggest problem is that it's very easy to forget you are shooting with an extremely long telephoto lens, after initially struggling to get anything particularly sharp (I've just come from a D90 and 70-200 VR, so was very used to a solid heavy set up to help stabilize handheld shooting) I gradually got used to it. Fortunately a Heron appeared in front of me so I grabbed a few shots, here is my favourite (even if it was straight into the sun):

 . . . I've been using a G1 for 18 months, love it to bits! to the point that my Nikon set up has not been used for the past 6 months. I'm not the dedicated out every moment waving camera type hobbyist. I am more the opportunist, camera/14-45 lens is small enough to fit comfortably in my 'man bag' . . . I can whip it out at a moments notice:naughty: not a practical option with the D90/18-70.

Seriously considering getting out of the DSLR business? . . . not even thinking go up a spec or two on the G1? From what I've read, and my need for a general type camera, the newer models offer nothing more than I have in the G1?

My passion for the 14-45 lens (18-70 on the Nikon) also makes the G1 a better option. I carry a 45-200 as well, totally impractical as a 'small ever-ready package' with the Nikon.

How may have had the 'time to move on' experiance, or are you still hanging on to that DSLR . . . just in case?

Hmmm, haven't used my DSLRs in months. Probably still hanging on to them due to laziness I guess. Been delighted with my GF1 and 14mm for several months now - suits my hill walking exploits just fine

Nice pic,I got rid of my D80 with lens and baggage after I got the GF1 and never looked at a dslr since,

i know this has probably been said before in here but 66 pages is a lot to read through!

anyone care to tell me what the major differences between the G, GF and GH's are? apart from the obvious size differences.

ta!

In very simple terms:

G = DSLR style body with electronic viewfinder
GF = Rangefinder style (no EVF)
GH = Pretty high-end video capabilities

Similar question - am seriously considering a G3 having decided to offload my Canon EOS500D. I just never got around to figuring out the complexities of the camera (lazy I know but I'm a busy fella) so ideally I am after a camera with ease of use that's almost 'compact like' with the image quality of a DSLR.

Must admit to being tempted by the G3 although am also looking at the Samsung NX11 and Sony Alpha A33 as alternatives.

For someone predominantly coming from a compact how easy to use is the G3 and what's the availability/price of pancake and telefoto lenses like?

Apologies if this has been asked before - 60 odd pages is a lot to read :)

Lovely shot. Now that's making me want another 14mm very badly indeed. Wish I had more time to get up on the moors. I really should make more effort.

Lovely shot, Julian. Much better than the promotional photos I've seen. It looks remarkably like Bannau Sir Gaer to me. I just love that place. I wish that photo was mine.
Some great photos on your website.

hmm, looking at the gh's theyre well out of my price range.

jessops currently have a gf2 with 14-40 and the 14mm prime for £400 - now i dont normally shop at jessops but that sounds pretty darn good to me

i know there was a huge hype over the gf1 but is the gf2 better or worse than it? anyone got a gf2 who can comment?

also, out of the G and the GF which, generally, has better IQ, noise handling and shutter lag/speed & ease of use?

I think this is a superb deal as you get the option to go small with the pancake or the flexibility to go with the small zoom.

This is a difficult question, many view the GF2 and the GF3 as dumbing down the GF series as they lose hardware controls and some features (such as flash exposure compensation) and need a touchscreen to replace the missing controls. The GF2 is smaller than the GF1 and offers better AF and video but it loses the mode dial and some other controls.

The G1, G2, GF1, GF2, GF3 all use the same Panasonic 12MP sensor so image quality and noise handling in raw is much the same although some of the later Panasonic models have better jpeg processing to give improved out of camera shots. The G3 is a bit different as it uses a new 16MP sensor which offers better image quality and noise handling, there's currently no sign of this sensor in a compact body either Panasonic or Olympus.

I'm not sure if any of them are better for shutter lag/speed as it's not something I've tried. I'd say any of them are as easy to use as they've got a decent range of auto and scene modes.

Having owned all the GF models I still think the GF1 is the better option, there are some good deals out there for the GF1 with 20mm lens, all you need to do is look at some of the pictures that have been posted on here a superb combination,If you want to spend a bit more money then it has to be the G3 with either the 14/20/25 lens its all about your budget.......good luck

damn, doesnt make my decision much easier! thanks for that though, has cleared a lot up.

i think what i will do is wait and see what nikon release, as rumour has it that they may well be releasing a mirrorless camera in their next press release - if they dont release one soon ill just sod it and buy either a gf1, NX10 or a G2

There's mildly interesting article at Luminous Landscape about the pros and cons of CSC v DSLR's.

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/csm_image_quality.shtml

It's interesting that they say that both noise and dynamic range are affected by pixel size. These somewhat inescapable logical conclusions seems to have been regularly denied by the proponents of high mp counts so it's nice to see "One of the best known consulting and testing companies in the industry" being quite clear in their opinion.

It'd be great to see an end to the mp race and the introduction of lower mp count sensors using state of the art designs. I don't know what the optimum mp count (and therefore pixel size) would be for each size format but I'm pretty sure that whatever it is would be perfectly adequate for acceptable A4 and even A3 prints from MFT, APS-C and FF and we'd get higher DR and better low light performance. It'll never happen though, I'm sure that the mp count will remain the main marketing weapon. As they say... "Megapixel count has been successfully marketed as the single most important number in defining how good a camera is; most consumers now believe the megapixel count can be used as a measure of the overall image quality of a camera."

Basic question for you G series aficionados, I'm looking to get either the G1 or G2 to use with my substantial collection of M42 lenses, is the iq comparable between them or is the G2 better in this and other areas, not looking to spend much more than a couple of hundred but I think that should get me either. Not interested in the GF as I need the articulating screen.

Hi folks - not posted in here (or on TP generally) for a little while - been busy with other things. Still loving my GF1 & G1 though. I've been on a road trip to the Pyrenees for the last couple of weeks and used them quite a bit.

Nice to see you posting again wondered what had happened to you, missed you pics.
Loved the Mountain Flower one absolutely great.

Yay, Grums back. Wondered where you'd got to.
lovely shots, especially the flower.

Woof Woof

you're right, every one sees a gazillion MP & assumes its got to be awesome beyond belief.
I've started shooting with a Fuji S5, it says 12mp on the box but in reality its only 6mp but the sensor is Fuji's own design. The best thing though is the DR & colour rendition.

Just wish some of the other camera manufacturers would give the Foveon sensor a go besides Sigma, it does produce wonderful colors

this is out of the camera jpg, with S5 in film emulation & auto DR.
tweak to contrast & brightness(Very very minor) & same with curves, the slightest of tweaks just for the sky. Snapped 2 mins before the sun went down.

Only used the GF1 for a few infra red shots recently, it may end up being sold as I need to find the money for a compound bow(Don't ask).

The GH1, GF1 and G1 allow the use of third party batteries.

The G2 with the current firmware *won't* work with third party batteries. Pretty sure the G3 and GF3 will be the same as the G2.

I've tried my third party battery which I had in my G1 in my G2 with latest firmware and it works fine. Battery level indicator works fine too.

Has anyone who bought a new G series camera received their copy of Lightroom yet?

G3 delivered on 13/7. Sent the forms in after a few days.

5 year gtee was delivered in about 10 days and LR3 received second week of August.
