"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Anyone with a GH2 and can recommend an after market battery ? , looked on ebay most dont allow camera feed back re power levels.
Did order 1 from a uk ebay supplier couple of days ago which didn"t state this restriction but just had a refund and email saying sorry out of stock.

OK, finally joining you guys, I've been thinking about getting some kind of version ever since the G1 first came out but there was always something else that took precedence, I have cash with a little extra put away for my purchase of the Sony A77 next month, I almost bought Davvy's G3 in the classifieds then I was offered a deal I couldn't refuse, a mint G2 with 14-42 lens 3 extra batteries and a camera case all fully boxed for £240, It should arrive on Monday, I've already ordered a M42 adapter for my collection of old lenses, can't wait to try them out. :):)

A really good move. It's a fantastic camera which I use far more than my D80.

Thanks, at that price I couldn't not buy it, anyone here use old glass on theirs

Canon FD glass almost exclusively with my G2. Mostly because I already had it for my film bodies.

Yep..Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 here

I use a battery from 7dayshop in my g1(same battery that's in the gh1)and that gives me battery level indicator. If you look on there site there are user reviews that might mention the gh1.

FD popular then:)
I've got mostly M42 stuff along with a couple of Rokkors 58/1.2 and 35/1.8 but the lens I'm really looking forward to using on it is my Flektogon 20/2.8 :D
My eyesight is getting worse in my old age lol, do you get a good clear focus when zooming in on the lcd

Thanks Matt , I bought a GH1 compatable battery from them earlier this yeay that worked fine as you say , the one they list for the GH2 is cheap enough but wont give battery levels though.

I have a very sharp Pentacon 50mm f1.8 M42 fir, Helios 58mm f2 and a couple other Russian lenses. My fave is the Vivitar 24mm f2.8 which is super sharp and is FD fitting. Try the Voigtlander lenses, they are superb!!!!! These are used on my G3 with great effect.

Andy is there a converter available to allow use of Canon lenses on the G3, do you know please ?

There ya go! he he. I got mine from ebay for £25.

Can't fault the speedy response thank you gents :)
When you say can't be stopped down does that mean the f stops will be fixed?

With EOS yes. BUT if you set the lens to the f number you want to use on your 7D, and then hold down the DOF preview button while taking the lens off should keep it at that f number.

Blimey ! Thanks Matt. You don't find that kind of information easily :) I might just be tempted to buy a converter now. Not sure how the G3 body will look with my 70-200 f2.8 attached to it though lol

I say should. It worked when a friend tried it with a 50mm 1.8.

Yes you do, but rember you can also zoom in using the EVF which i find more stable for maual focus.

I don't think that I could live with not being able to change the aperture on camera so I personally wouldn't bother with eos lenses, not when there are so many other oprions. I think I'd go for... oh I dunno, an adapter that would allow the use of Voigtlander lenses as they're a joy to use.

Well just got myself round to buying the 20mm pancake, and in one evening of playing suitably impressed

I agree all the fuss of the 20mm is truly justified....what a lens

I think the only thing that annoys me slightly is that it's not an internal focus lens, and the 14mm is so much faster to focus. Its on my camera 99%of the time though.

Ahhh...is that why it takes so long? though am a big fan of manual focus so hopefully may force me in to using this more often

Woohoo! My free copy of Lightroom 3 arrived today, a month after I submitted the claim form. Still no 5-year guarantee though.

Now I'm really worried. I sent mine off on 10th August, but no sign of it yet.
Post office however left me a note saying a letter had been sent without sufficient stamps on and was being kept at the sorting office (which is never open). I hope it wasn't my copy of Lightroom. Did it come in a packet or a letter please Glen?

I had a revelation today, last week I struggled at Castle Combe with burst shooting and AFC. To see if things were any better I switched to AFS and it fires away quite happily at its full rate, but the really weird thing is that AFS is much much better at tracking moving objects than AFC (which makes no sense, but I'm going with it)

So, for the first time in 5 years I'm now shooting motorsport permanently in AFS. My keeper rate went through the roof compared to last week, even though the conditions were awful (high winds, rain) and I got back into playing around with really tough shutter speeds.

I love my G3, but I love the 100-300mm even more.

It was sent recorded delivery (as is everyone else's) in a padded envelope with a prepaid label, so it won't be your Lightroom. I wouldn't worry, it'll show up.

Thank you Glenn. You've put my mind at rest. I downloaded the trial as you suggested and must say I am very pleased with it compared to my old version. Just hope now that my copy with serial number will arrive before trial runs out.

What happened to the pic you took today on your walk seems to have vanished.

Well I managed to make a right mess of my photoshoot today. The ironman Wales triathlon was coming through our village today, so I went down there armed with my G1 and kit lens.

My aim was to pan some shots of the cyclists. Mistake 1 - I stood at the bottom of a steep descent. I tried to set my camera up in shutter mode thinking I would need about 1/30 sec, ISO 100 and the aperture at f22. This was my first problem, as the day was sunny to get correct exposure I needed a faster shutter speed. I should have brought my ND filter. I ended up having to shoot at 1/250.:shake:

I set my shooting mode to AFC, then when the first cyclist came racing down the hill at about 60mph my focus wouldn't lock on and I missed the shot. I then changed back to AFS. I was shooting in RAW and so then when several cyclists came down the hill one after the other the camera took too long to shoot more than one. I changed to jpeg and just tried to get the cyclists and forget the fancy panning bit - but this resulted in lots of bums!:bang:

Lessons learnt: I should have stood on the ascent, taken my ND filter with me, and unless someone can tell me where I went wrong my Nikon D90 as I seemed to have more success with this in the past.

I would be grateful for some tips please if anyone has managed to have more success with the G series.

With your aperture so small (and hence DoF so large), couldn't you have turned off AF?

Think I would have focussed on a fixed point with manual focus, set a high speed and choose aperature, in fact all manual I think. And then fired the button at the right moment....just my thought but is probably wrong.

I've spent about 10hrs shooting fast moving subjects with my G3 and E-PL2 recently and I feel I've now got them set up to the point where it's not too far off my D90 for speed (this is for cars travelling between 80-150mph, but the concept is the same)

This is the best set up I've managed:

1) Focus Priority: Off (It simply cannot handle panning)
2) Focus Mode: AFS (For some reason AFC just seems to slow everything down )
3) Single Area AF (I've placed the point pretty much everywhere and it seems to work very well, even right in the corners)

I personally use Shutter Priority and have found that the G3 in particular handles exposure better than my D90 when panning, particuarly in bright conditions.

I'm surprised you had to go all the way up to 1/250, even on the brightest summer day I've been able to shoot at 1/50th in Shutter Priority and it still not overexpose (no ND filters)

Happens to all of us. I have a painful memory of struggling to take shots of Las Vegas at night from a helicopter with my 18-105. On landing I remembered that I'd had my fast prime in the bag the whole time. Cretin.

Thanks Dave, I was hoping to get some panning shots so I wanted to use a slow shutter speed, hence the reason I used shutter priority, but I think MF would have been the better option.

Thanks for your helpful tips. I made a typo though I have a D80 not D90. I will certainly try your suggestions, and go out and have a practice.

I was very surprised too that when I set a slower shutter speed it was overexposing. I will have another test with my G2 instead on a similar day and see what happens.

I suspect my problems are OP related and not the camera.:bonk:

Here are the best (how sad is that) photos that I got of the ironman.
