"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

I've been cleaning out my cupboards and came across a load of lens which I used with my Ricoh KR10 film camera. Some are M42 mount and some are Pentax K. Would any of these be of any use to use with my G1 or GF1. Would it be worth getting any adaptors or should I put them on fleabay? Anyone know please?:thinking::help:

I've got an M42 adaptor that was about £20 from ebay, works fine but the old Prinzflex lenses I have are crap so no point in using them.
I'm on the lookout for a decent legacy lens for indoor macro, quite a few Carl Zeiss lenses in an M42 mount.
As long as the lens has a manual aperture ring and focus you can use it on a mft camera with no problems.

That Vivitar macro may be worth keeping.

Thanks Danny. So it looks like a job lot on ebay auction. I don't think it would be worth getting an adaptor for the Vivitar as I would have to get a PK to mft which would probably cost more than the lens. I think I would be better off getting an adaptor for My Nikon 28mm and my Nikon 50mm.

Well, my GF1 has gone to a new owner today.

I'm actually a little sad about it, as I hadn't really planned on selling it. I had intended on keeping it and adding lenses to my DSLR but circumstances dictate against at present...

One day I will another one, with a 20mm lens. They are cracking bits of kit and destined in my humble opinion to become a classic. Certainly Panasonic hit the sweet spot with the little GF1!

A sad day, but I hope circumstances will soon allow you to get another. The 20mm lens is awesome.

I'd ditch everything except the Cosina - that should be pretty good, and 135mm isn't a bad length to be stuck with. The Vivitar may be ok, but OK is as good a it'll get - if you get some cheap extension tubes off ebay big old lenses like that can make pretty nifty macro lenses if you can hold them still!

After being impressed with high ISO images posted here I've been playing with Silkypix with very disappointing results.

The picture I previously posted of the pier looks nice when viewed in Silkypix but is a completely unusable blotchy mess when outputted as a JPEG or TIFF. I spotted a facility to email the help team and I've just received a reply back but unfortunately all they said is that I should save the image as max quality JPEG or TIFF and of course I've already done this and the result is a blotchy mess and what looks like an increase in contrast.

I don't know what Silkypix is doing and why the in Silkypix image differs so much from the saved image but I'm not impressed, in fact my impression of Silkypix is that it's a complete pile of crap

I quite agree. It's a total load of rubbish. There seems to be no logic to it and what a rubbish help file.

Danny, lowering the ISO wasn't really an option as there's no way I could have hand held that shot for 30 seconds or so and even if I had I suspect that noise would still have been an issue. I would accept that I'm expecting too much if other people weren't getting much better results with other software.

HillGirl, it does seem to be rubbish. What has annoyed me is that it looks really good on screen... until it's saved. I almost wouldn't mind if it looked crap on screen before being saved to but the fact that it tells big porkies annoys me.

I suppose the answer is to invest in some new software.

Is there any chance that you could post the original file somewhere? Perhaps one of us could play around with it and save it as a jpeg using different software, then, if you are thinking of a software purchase, you would have an idea what works best.

Thanks for the offer and I'll take you up on it at some point but it'll be in a while as my current laptop is falling apart so I'll wait until I get a new one before buying any new software just in case there are any issues.

My current laptop is a Fuji / Siemens and the case is basically falling apart, all the plastic came off around the hinges and one hinge fell apart and the screen is hanging on by just one hinge now. All this even though it's had a very easy life and has never been used out of the house. I've never had any consumer electronic item fall apart like this.

Try a Dell next time they seem to be ok to me

I've just been trying Rawtherapee and it does a much better job cleaning up noise than Silkypix. It isn't as good as the shots some of you have posted here but it'll do until I sort my lap top out and buy something better.

CS2 won't open the raw files.

I persevered with Silkypix for a day or two & just couldn't get to grips with it @ all. I now use Lightroom 2.7 which opens raws from my G1-GF1 & Lx3

I need an adaptor for my Nikon 24mm f2.8D AF lens and also for my 50mm f1.8D AF lens.

I'm a bit confused as to which I need. I see several ads for Nikon F to micro 4/3, would these be suitable.

I presume I don't need one with an aperture ring on as both of these lenses have an aperture ring. I can't afford one of the Novaflex ones, and reading on some reviews I understand that people have had problems removing the adaptors as the pin thing sticks and they can't get it off unless they poke a screwdriver in, which sounds a bit worrying to me.

Has anyone had any experience with these and did they find a reasonably priced adaptor £20-£25 range that worked OK please?

As far as I'm aware as long as the Nikon lenses have an aperture ring and manual focus ring then any old Nikon -m4/3 should do the trick. Ebay ones are fine mostly but they are hardly precision engineered, so just give it a good test and make sure you're happy with it. My OM -m4/3 one ha a ight leak issue which is only noticeable on long exposures in Infra red, but my MD -m4/3 from the same source has been spot on and feels a little better made, despite obviously being of the same origins.

First trip out for weeks and weather was grotty, So it had to be Costas and without a flash !!

Thanks Alan. Would you say that it was worth having one to use with my 50mm and 24mm primes? How do you go about using them? Am I right in thinking
  1. shoot without lens
  2. set in aperture or manual mode
  3. Use aperture ring to select f stop and take picture (Aperture mode)
  4. Totally confused with manual mode with adaptor. Can you still adjust the exposure?

Please help - confused.

Yeah, pretty much. You'll need to be in manual though as there is no electronic aperture reading.

In manual mode you set the shutter speed on the camera, and the aperture on the lens. Aperture priority works fine, the camera selects the shutter speed for you - works well.

It's simpler than you think

Thanks Graham. Have you any photos that you took with the 50mm and the adapter. Where did you get yours from?

You can run a legacy lens in whatever mode you want, but in iAuto, P or A you will only get automatic exposure time, you still have to set aperture and focus manually. In S and M modes you will additionally have to set the exposure time. I often find legcay lenses a lot easier to use than the new fangled exlectronic lenses, and DOF preview is permanent on them too!

I really must get out with my 24mm again, I loved that lens!

Both Taken on an Olympus E520, Vivitar 24mm f2.8 (not the one I'm selling but the OM version thereof).

Mmmmm, love those chocolate twists

Mmmmm, cup of coffee and a kipper!! Lol

Interesting blog that, and echoes much of my own views on m4/3 and the wider photography world.

Finally got to take my G2 on an outing to film some seals on a tidal river bank. When we got there, this little chap was blocking the path...

We got him to move in the end and took some of the seals. They were a long way off, this was the best still I could get with the 45-200. Click pics for larger size.

Not sure if this has been posted, but i found this a good read.

Some good points in there, I like the dpreview where someone is criticising the M series for slow manual focusing. I remember my first rangefinder ( not a Leica, it was a Fed 4L that looks incredibly like the new Fuji x100) with manual focusing and remembering to stop down the aperture ring after focusing and before pressing the button. With practise, it was a very quick system.

I know it's not photography....

It is with a G series camera though, so thats ok.

Nice video, it would be nice if you could get the music syncing with the clips of the individual band members, but I suspect thats for the future...
They sound pretty good too

Allan

Cheers, the footage is actually of a couple of different songs being recorded at different tempos etc so I couldn't really sync it. When I do it proper next time it will all be synced.

They are very very talented - little *******s! :)
