"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

My new adapter so that I can fit my Nikon 50mm lens to G1/GF1 has arrived this morning. Seems to work OK, but just one query. When using manual Focus is there anyway to get the magnified view. I read somewhere on the net that it was possible but cant find the reference to it now. Does anyone know please.

Just found the link and it says manually set the MF magnification by pressing in the rear dial, or I suppose the front dial on the G1 but this doesn't do anything. Could anyone please try on theirs. This is the link http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-94526.html

On my G2, if you press in the wheel it will magnify focus. Not sure if G1/GF1 are the same? Comes in really handy for when I use my Canon mounts.

On my GF1 you can just press in the control wheel to bring up the zoomed view - but not on the G1. There is a way to do it on the G1 though, I think you press the left button to bring up the area selection then the central menu button to zoom in on that area?

Solved it. On my G1 I have to press the Left hand button on the menu set, then when MF screen appears use 4 outer buttons on menu set to move MF focus area then press the menu set button. Then press menu set to go back to normal screen. It wont work on mine if I press the wheel in.

Thanks Graham. That's how it's working on my G1, now to test it on the GF1.

Isn't that what I said? :)

edit: too slow!

Once you've activated the MF assist you can zoom in and out with the front scroll wheel.

The MF assist is useful, but I wish it would allow you to zoom right out, not start at 10x, sometimes I want to view at say 2x. Also, when you set exposure compensation the display brightenes which is useful in low light situations - if you then go to MF assist, it goes back to normal exposure, and often you can't see anything at all in the magnified view!

I hoe they sort that out for the next camera!

I agree Alan. It would be nicer is you could choose your zoom factor. My screen seems to go very wobbly at 5x and 10x.

Add weathersealing, and let Olympus take care of all the image processing and you've got the best camera on earth! :D

My laptop screen fell off and I had to buy another lap top :bang: and when I'd loaded everything back on CS2 would no longer work as it will not register and as I've not been happy with the noise reduction results I've been getting I thought I'd try some other newer stuff rather than battle with adobe over why CS2 wont work...

I tried some free noise reduction packages and then I downloaded a trial version of Elements 9 and I'm very happy with the results after noise reduction on high ISO shots and generally it seems to do everything that I want. It seems to be better than Silkypix (no surprise there) but it even seems better than my previous favourite, Raw Shooter Essentials, so I'm wondering what I'd gain by spending an eye watering £600+ for CS?? or £200+ for Lightroom?

Ahhh... It'll open GF1 and 20D RAW but not LX5... Does anyone know if Adobe issue updates for E9 that might include the LX5 at some point? Actually forget this last bit as I can convert LX5 RAW to DNG and then E9 will open them.

I sent my form off yesterday so I'll update when it gets here. They will have Elements 10 out by the time it arrives! :whistling:

Software package and voucher arrived on Monday. Installed last night and had a play. The content aware fill brush is pretty impressive!!

2 weeks from sending to the package arriving, pretty impressive service from Panasonic. I sent mine first class signed for, not sure if that makes a difference.

Anyone roses freebies arrived yet?

I think if you download the Camera Raw 6.2 update it will open the LX5 files, follow these instructions below that I found in another forum.

1. Install Elements 9 then open and either activate or accept trial. Close E9
2. Download Camera Raw 6.2 zip file from the link below for PSE8 (works ok for 9 )
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4810&fileID=4474
3. Unzip to a folder.
4. When unzipped you will find a file Camera Raw.8bi and a folder Win64.
5. Copy the Camera Raw.8bi file to c:\program files\adobe\Photoshop elements9\plugins\fileformats.
6. Done.
If you are using a 64 bit system use the approite .BI file

I am pretty sure this works but my Dad is coming over with his LX5 tomorrow and I will try it on my PSE9 and see how I get on.

Thanks for that I'll give it a go.

It looks like E9 does get updates as when I opened it today that's exectly what it did, but it didn't allow LX5 files to be opened.

I'll give your link a go.

Thanks again.

My Dad came round today with his LX5. Took a couple of RAW images then put the sd card in the reader.
I opened E9 and went to file>open and looked in the sd card. Picked the RAW file and it opened, I think, in Camera Raw. I saved it after adjustment and it opened in the main E9 window where I could adjust it again then saved it as a Tiff file.
So, it does work ok with E9. I am using a Mac, but a PC should open it like this too.
How are you getting on with it? Did you download camera raw?
Allan

Hi,

No luck with the RAW update as it still wont open LX5 RAW's but it's not a big problem as I can convert to DSG if it still doesn't work when I buy the package.

I'm quite impressed with E9 as it seems to do everything that I want and although things have been moved around a little everything is there somewhere. I'm impressed with the noise reduction and those pier in the dark shots I posted earlier come up well as do ISO 3200 shots from my 20D. E9 is much better than CS2 for this.

All in all as I only process still images I really can't see why I'd need to spend hundreds updating or replacing CS2 when I can use this for £70.

Thanks again for your help.

Woof, Just found a thread on another forum that might be useful ( can we link to other forum threads?) anyway, its HERE but the last post seems to mention camera raw 6.3.
Might be worth a look through? Forum is called Elements Village and might also be useful, HERE.
Allan

Hmmm. Thanks again.

I think I'll wait and see what E9 loads like when I buy it and investigate further if the LX5 RAW still wont load. It would be nice to load them but if not there's always DNG.

I've been a bit peeved at the criticisms of MFT in other threads (particularly when the criticisms, I suspect, come from people who haven't actually used one.) So as I'm playing with some new but reasonably priced software I fired off a few test shots in a room dimly lit by one energy saving bulb and subjected them all to the same noise reduction. Better results may very well be possible with more care and skill.

And just for fun, Canon 20D, ISO 3,200.

IMVHO all cameras are usable at 3,200. The LX5 falls apart at 6,400 and 12,800 which seem to be saved as smaller JPEG's and seem to have had a lot of noise reduction done on them in camera.

IMVHO the GF1 and even the LX5 are usable to 3,200 and produce files that with minimal effort with modern noise reduction would make acceptable prints. Of course if heavy cropping is done things might look worse but the whole images are acceptable IMVHO.

What's to complain about?

This seems to be common with most makes, you should look at the Leica threads. Full of sweeping statements knocking them by people who have probably never seen one in the flesh.

Well, good luck with your precessing, those high iso shots should shut a few more people up too!

Allan

I'll have a serious go when I load my very own shop bought E9 and I'll revisit your links if I have a problem, thanks.

My high ISO shots are ok for me and I'm sure that better is possible if spending more time on them.

I've not been doing any NR on real world GF1 shots up to 2,500 which as far as I remember is the highest that auto ISO once selected, in York Minister, as whole images look fine.

Hmm, where have all the G users gone, this thread was on page 4!
So, heres a shot for you of an RAF Nimrod parked on MOD property. I hope you all appreciate I risked being shot / arrested / G2 confiscated / sd card ceremoniously burnt in front of me, just to get this shot, and as a bonus, theres a Jaguar next to it..

G2 with 45-200 lens. 155mm ƒ9 @ 1/320. ISO100

Is that Manston? I've always seen aircraft tucked away from the main museum area, and they show up on google maps, but i've never been able to get to them. Is it private property?

Nice stealth skills!

I had one of my pics I took for work with the GF1 and 20mm published in the local paper today. Reasonable size and didn't come out too badly, though they cropped it slightly strangely. Will post up a scan at some point. :)

Sounds good, I'll look forward to seeing it.

Danny, yes it was in the MOD Fire Defence Training site next to Manston airport. Definitely private!
There are a few planes parked around the museum and on the airport grounds but they are easily seen. The Nimrod can be seen easily from the road together with a few of the burned out and damaged planes they use for training

In the linked review they say...

"Not to be overlooked is that the LCD is a touch screen. This means that you can touch focus as well as do things like move the histogram with your finger to a part of the screen that you prefer. Very cool.

On the downside is the fact that often the screen is touched by the buckle on the lens strap or a button on your shirt and you can find the camera focusing and shooting, seemingly with a mind of its own. Turning off the LCD or reversing it is a solution, but just be aware of the issue."

I saw, but I'm sure I remember reading an old review and it said it cold be disabled? I won't be getting one if it can't be disabled - touchscreens are the tool of the devil!

I agree.

I'll keep reading reviews but I doubt I'll be getting one. I really do like the idea of a smaller system though.

Definately agree Alan. My Panasonic FX500 with touch screen drives me round the bend. Give me the manual mode button any day.

You can disable a lot of the touchscreen functions, but not the touch focus. You could always turn the screen off and use the evf for everything. Personally, I dont find it a problem but if you hang it round your neck then things touching the screen when its still on could alter settings or more likely alter the focus point ( hit the trash can to re-centre it)
It would be nice to be able to disable the touch function altogether sometimes, it is The Devils Work indeed!

I don't mind things touching it when it's hung round my neck, as in that situation my camera is always off, but what would annoy me is whilst I'm looking through the EVF, my nose may touch the screen and bam I've focussed on the overhanging twig in the corner of my frame or suddenly I've changed the white balance and everythings gone lime green...

No, that wouldn't happen, the LCD screen turns off when you lift the camera to you eye, theres a sensor next to the EVF.

Might be able to live with a GH2 then...hmmm

No! Must wait till the 12-50 is in my grasp before a new body!

12-50? That ones passed me by, where would one purchase such an article?
Allan

The G2 does look to be a bargain. I fancy a blue one, or a red one.

What colour is yours Allan?

Good old black, that was the only colour they had in the shop, and they only had that one!
It does look good in blue though
Allan

Would you say that the high ISO performance is much better than the GF1?

well it's rumoured to be out in a month or 2, but is likely to be expensive. It will however pretty much be the only lens I require.
