"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Any idea what the bits sticking out from the middle are called? :)

GF1 & 20mm

The 6 parts with red bean shaped sections are called the Stamen of which the red sections are the Anthers. The long section in the middle is called the Stigma and reaches down into the plants' Ovary. Basically the reproductive organs of the plant.

Lens flare agogo... :)

That looks great Graham. I love how the flare has desaturated the image. It gives it a 70's feel. Wonderful stuff!!!!

I don't suppose any of you have the 20mm and either the Panny or Olympus wide angles lenses?
If anyone does, would it be possible to get a test shot of each in a fixed position?
Just want to see the difference in width between the 20mm and a wide.

Looks like he is carrying a candyfloss, Graham!! :D

1. OPTICAL VIEWFINDER
2. Lens choice/cost for Ultra wide shots
3. Noise at higher ISO - although as Grum said the GH2 is closing the gap
4. OPTICAL VIEWFINDER

You forgot:
5. Phase detection AF (as opposed to contrast detection in MFT)
6. Higher frame rate
7. Increased sensor size = larger pixels
8. Better flash systems
9. Handling - larger DSLRs are in the main far better to handle, especially over a sustained period of time.
10. Better body & lens balancing with telephoto lenses.

But who's counting? ;)

The two types of cameras are for different markets entirely, and I don;t see that much of a cross over. In the past people have bought even basic DSLR which have been complete overkill for their photographic needs (I see loads at kids birthday parties) MFT or similar smaller cameras would be much better for their needs.

I'm prone to say that if you have to ask whether you should get an MFT camera or a DSLR then you don't need a DSLR, at least not yet.

Sun setting behind Lord Hereford's Knob yesterday. Taken from Hay Bluff with GF1 and 14-45mm:

Lovely picture , results from the GF1 is fantastic:thumbs:

Thank you! Yup, the GF1 continues to impress. Especially now I've tried the 14-45mm on f8 for landscapes. Seems to be the sweet spot - plenty of DoF and very, very sharp.

Wow. Nice!. How do you rate the 9-18? Compared to the 14-45 for example.

New: Panasonic 'Lumix G VARIO 100-300 f4-f5.6 with stabilization', street price seems to be £500-£550 . . . !!!:naughty:

Then you read in detail, the spec., for the new GH2, lens and GH2 here:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/panasonic_gh2_first_look.shtml

Makes one think a bit, I'm not a 'geek' (in the nicest possible way) type tog, I'm definitely the weekender type . . . photography has to 'fit around my life', so, small'ish light is important

I dont own the 14-45 so I couldn't really tell you :D I have the 20mm and the 9-18. Plenty of images in my gallery so have a look. I rate the 9-18 very highly after having a proper chance to use it!

Amazing photos on your gallery Rich. I very much enjoyed them, and the GF1 certainly worked well in your hands. Bet your legs are tired now.

Thanks for the comments :)

Suprisingly, my legs werent the source of any issues. It was the chest! Breathing 50% oxygen makes any sort of movement really difficult! The pace was really steady though and I had trained hard for it, so no real issues! Couple of our guys didn't make the summit of Kala Patthar but everybody made it to basecamp!

Totally loving the GF1, completely bought into it. It desperately needs a good quality Viewfinder though. Using the screen in direct sunlight is a pain in the backside! I had a GGS protecter and a anti-reflective protector too!

As for the GGS, rubbish imho. Breaks way too easily. Breaks far more easily than the LCD plastic cover ever would, so I'm not seeing the benefit.

Roll on GF2. Really looking forward to seeing what they do with it. Would love to see some more high quality primes too!

Rich - you could try using something like the Clearviewer or the Hoodman Hoodloupe instead of the EVF.

I really look forward to seeing what the GF2 looks like. If they could squeeze in a decent EVF like the G1 has, AND a flippy screen, but keep the small form factor, that would be rather cool :)

AF speed on a par with the new GH2 would be good too

I'm betting the GF2 will have an integrated EVF. Faster AF is always a plus, but I think those are probably the only 2 things I would look to improve. No doubt video will see a boost to 1080P and stereo recording.

Just the EVF would see me buying a GF2 to be frank.

I can't see them putting an evf on the GF, it would go against the point of the GF camera's. The GF2 will probably have touch screen lcd and maybe some tweaks picked up from the G2/GH...

...and maybe some horrible body colours, a vivid purple or a metallic green...Maybe.
:)

Great pictures Rich.......Short of breath, know exactly how you felt...

I do hope not. I want my GF1 to hold its value until I sell it when the Fuji X100 is released.

I know what you mean about the X100, that is one sexy looking camera

I am moving on guys (and gals)... got myself a Nikon D90 so have my G1 and accessories for sale in down there

VVVVV

(The 45-200 is sold pending payment, but the rest is still up for grabs)

Well 'Amnesia', looks like I will be following you down the D90 rout? although I may just hang until after Christmas, see how the D7000 fairs? Also, there are likely to be a few bargain D90's on offer to 'he who has cash', there may even be January Sale deals?

I cant see the 7000 being my bag, the cost for one thing, plus I have no one to impress accept me.

The question will be, do I hang on to the G1, I have pretty well the same kit as you??? I will definitely be selling the D5000. If I sell the G1 as well, it leaves me with no animated screen, and no 'small, light' quality camera, could be a problem, me with my dodgy knee and all? It will depend on who waves cash, at what, and how much? . . . Mmm, I have an eye on a very smart looking compact?

Enjoy your D90 Amnesia, we will likely bump into each other on the 'D90 owners thread'
