"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Personally I vote for ditching this thread and just using the other one - to save confusion/duplication - but I don't want to upset anyone :)

Don't think they will make a M4/3 section as there are no other sections for specific camera types (apart from film but that's a little different).

Mathers have some unboxed 20mm 1.7s for £219 I believe.

Well I'm comfortable either way, but it does seem to make sense to have one thread at least that way we aren't going to miss anything, or have to double post.

I agree with you Graham, I can't see the powers that be here making a seperate section, mind you 4/3rds is a little different too :D

I'll take a look at Mathers, I was hoping to get as close to the £200 mark as possible with Christmas coming :|

Wow, I seem to have missed so much in the last few days, Graham going and coming back ( welcome back to the fold Graham, glad you decided to stay) thread and title change discussions and some more wonderful pics.

I've been playing with my new Nikon, but its gone back to get fixed. I feel I have neglected my GF1 for a while, I must get out and grab some pics to post.

Wow Nikon has not lasted long !!!

10 days! But, in fairness, I think it was faulty from the start, it just took 10 days for me to send it back for replacement. Its a cracking camera though ( Coolpix P7000) Not many people seem to be posting about them, in fact, I think its probably only me so far!

Just got back from Mathers, they didn't have the unboxed 20mm f1.7 but was happy to sell me one, manager just took it out from a GF1 kit:thumbs:

Mathers are super people to deal with.......

Now get cracking and see what a cracking lens it is and show us some of your pics with it:thumbs:!

Is anyone doing IR photography with the GF1? I recall someone using a filter to get IR results but can't remember who it was.

I really miss my GF1 wish I never sold it now :( Then again the LX5 is such a cracker :) might get a GF1 again but keep the LX5 or may wait for a GF2 :)

Ive just been looking at this item on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-G-AF-S-Lens-Micro-4-3-Adapter-GF1-G2-G10-E-PL1-/110551045848

Does anyone know please whether this would work with a G lens and also a D lens, and what the limitations regarding metering and focusing would be?

I don't have one, but from the description it sounds similar to the Novoflex adapter, which has an aperture ring built in to enable the use of G lenses -- though can't see what you turn on this one. Earlier lenses, such as the AF-D lenses have aperture rings so would be fine anyway.

With any of these adapters:

Metering will be fine as the camera will meter with any lens.

Focus will be manual -- older types of lenses (for example, AiS or better Ai) tend to be easier to focus as they were designed primarily for MF and often require a longer turn to reach any focus distance.

Don't forget an adapter will push the lens out as far as it would be on a Nikon, or whichever body the lens/adapter was designed for, so the result could be quite bulky.

Thank you Andrew for your helpful reply. On reflection I think that I most probably don't need an adaptor as I will only be using the GF1 when I am out walking. At other times I will be using my Nikon D80 with my D and G lenses. It just seemed like a good idea to be able to use my 50mm prime lens, but as this would make my GF1 bulky with the extra length of the adaptor it maybe better to just use my 14-45 lens. I hadn't considered the extra length of the adaptor, so thank you, you have just saved me some money.:D

"You just saved me money"

Now what will you spend it on!

Do you prefer the GF1 over your LX5? What's lacking in the LX5?

Hmm I think the GF1 with it 20mm is such a Cracker it takes lovely pictures I think it down to the Sensor on the GF1 making the images better... Saying that the LX5 is a cracker too for a compact it be best compact I have had...

To be very honest there is nothing wrong with the LX5 it is a VERY good camera for it size and can get some good images out of it.. It more likely that I have had a GF1 I can see the slight different but would expect that as it a 4/3 camera and a better lens since the 20mm is 1.7 If you not had a GF1 and go for a LX5 from the start you wont be disappointed know the meaning

Well I just had some amazing news - someone has handed in my GF1!!! So I'm getting my baby back!!! :D :D :D

Brilliant news. Not been posting of late but have followed your recent trials with interest Grum. Since you were one of the reasons I picked up a GF1 in the first place I am glad to hear you are sticking with it all and to top it off, are getting your camera back. Well done for giving yourself a hearty dose of MTFU ;)

Just saw the thread on STW. Brilliant news.
Unless my thumb improves I may end up going for a 60D. Easier to turn rear command dial on the canon than on the GF1 and if some new medication works I can think about trying to get my license back off the DVLA.

That's awesome news Graham, I'm really pleased for you... it's nice to know there are some honest people out there as well  :)

ME!!

You cant leave us in the lurch like that! What filter did you use, does the GF1 need a 20 second exposure to produce that or can you just click away with it fitted?
I tried IR with a Nikon D300 but needed very long exposures to get anything decent, it had a very efficient IR blocking filter fitted....

Actually, I am completely wrong here, I used the G1 and not the GF1, which doesn't have IR capability with a filter on the front. Sorry to mislead but I just realised my mistake when typing a reply :bonk:

Ive been doing a fair bit of IR on the GF1
All done with a 720nm filter and an IR action for Photoshop to swap the channels over. Look in the old GF1 thread and you'll find the link.

Exposure wise, anything up to 15-20 seconds max. Remember to set "Long exposure noise reduction" to ON.

Graham,
That is the best news I've heard for ages......now I just can't wait for the first new picture from your "Baby"

Thanks Oldboy. I bought one of those IR filters but haven't got round to trying it yet.

Here's one of the almost lost GF1 pics :)

Great pic mate.....certainly one to remember as special:thumbs:

Thanks :)

Yup just went and picked up the camera from the VC in Glenridding.

It was taken at Dale Head near Ullswater in the Lakes, just before I lost the camera.

Woo Hoo Grahams back in business!! Great news!

Not used mine for a while but should be able to over the next few weeks as kids are off school so I'm going to take them places so they can b****r off and leave me to snap away!

Love the pic of your son KayJay. Interested to know how you find using the 5d Mk II compared to the GF1 - I've been thinking about getting a DSLR to complement the GF1 for a while and that is one I'm considering. Are you using the 5D for paid work? That's partly what I am thinking of it for.

Just want to thank everyone again for all the kind words and support - and I'm sorry for my fit of silliness. Been having a bit of a rough time lately and it really has been touching to have everyone be so supportive, even if I don't know any of you IRL. If you are ever up in my neck of the woods give me shout and we can go out and take some pics. :)

Been eyeing up the 60D, while it's not full frame, it's nice size & lots of features, 1080 HD movie, good performance at high iso(so has the GH2 from a few pics shot by some one who has one on trial from Panasonic).
Reckon a 60D with sigma 30mm F/1.4 would match the GF1 & 20mm.

Know how you feel, just about given up on using GF1 recently with not being good/loosing license. iPhone, iPad & this forum has helped keep me sane.
